2 POP ART HISTORY NAME HR Pop art is short for Popular Art. The Pop art movement started in England during the 1950ʼs as a reaction to the post-war movement known as Abstract Expressionism. Abstract Expressionism allowed painters great artistic freedom and liberty. Textures, drips and strokes were common among the action painters and color field artists working in Abstract Expressionism. Pop artists began reacting to this era of looking inward by instead looking out around them and the influence mass media had on the public. Pop artists were influenced by comic books, mass production, processed foods, advertisements, cult figures and movie stars. Pop art reached the United States in the late 1950ʼs and found a haven in New York city.. Pop artists redefined what could be classified as art because of their interest in these concepts : 1 ) everyday objects that were mass produced 2 ) the images or symbols of these objects 3 ) recreating these images of popular culture using the techniques of advertising and mass media. Often Marcel Duchamp is credited with giving rise to Pop art because of his ready made sculptures. Duchamp would use common everyday objects and fasten them together in fresh and new ways. The objects he used were already manufactured, he just inventively created art with them. This idea of using the everyday environment struck a chord with young, new artists. In reality all artists from the early cave painters to Van Goghs painting of the Sunflowers have always tried to show the everyday environment and the objects around them. So Pop artists werenʼt so different except for the impact of expanding technology. In the 60ʼs television, travel and communication presented a stage where products, items and objects could gain world wide recognition instantly. In response to this

3 Pop artists used ready made images as their source for art because of their instant recognition value. Paintings and silkscreens of soft drinks, soup cans, fast food, famous celebrities, comic book characters, news events and such started being produced. Large sculptures of fast food, realistic people, tools and household objects were created. At the Walker Art Sculpture Garden in Minneapolis there is a work by Claes Olenburg and his wife Coosje van Bruggen called the Spoonbridge and Cherry. It is a Pop art piece and also site specific : because it is best visited during the winter following a large snowfall. It would then appear to be a cherry on ice cream with a spoon ready for the first sample. In the beginning Pop artists were called the New Realists because their art was so identical to the things they copied. Soon Pop artists began to branch out into new media. Video, collage, sound, movies and interactive happenings became vehicles for producing Pop art. Recently in Japan with the cartoon Manga characters and Anime there has been a resurgence of Pop art images making its way into the mainstream. There were many influential Pop artists. These are a few of the notables and their contribution to Pop art : Marcel Duchamp - French artist, father of the ready mades produced the Mona Lisa with goatee and mustache and the the bike tire in stool. He influenced Picassoʼs found object art. Claes Oldenburg & Coosjie van Bruggen - Swedish artists who are husband & wife are creators of large scale sculptures of everyday things, fast food, tools and as mentioned the Spoonbridge and Cherry. Andy Warhol - American painter, silkscreen artist and movie maker who produced the famous Campbell soup cans, pictures of Marilyn Monroe and John Wayne and other notables. Roy Lichtenstein - American painter who used the Benday dot method to produce his paintings, well know for reproducing comic book art and the influence of other artists. He used the Benday dot method to make his work look like it had been done by a machine and

4 to get away from conventional brush painting. Robert Indiana - American sculptor and painter, known for his LOVE painting and other works. Duane Hanson - Minnesota educated artist know for creating life like sculptures of people using plastics, resin, etc. Ralph Goings - a California art teacher who did realistic paintings by projecting photo images, he did a series of diner paintings. George Segal - an art instructor from Maine who wrapped people in medical plaster casting and produced life like statues from reassembling the body parts, often set his casted people into real environments. Liza Lou she creates art showing popular objects by using beads, she left the San Francisco Institue of Art because she was told she had to stop using beads. Liza has created portraits of Presidents, a beaded kitchen and an entire backyard that took 2 years to create, it has 250,000 blades of grass made from 30 million beads! Judy Onforio a self taught artist from Rochester, MN. She says of her work that, I begin by searching, collecting, stockpiling and sorting images, objects and ideas. She creates odd sculptures from a variety of found objects, like Marcel Duchanp.

5 POP ART PASTEL MONTAGE Name hr. grade Project idea : Students will use contemporary symbols and objects ( popular items) to create a storyboard collage. The student will be able to justify how the selected objects associate with one another. A MONTAGE is a picture made from many pictures or designs that are closely arranged or superimposed upon each other. 1 ) Student selects a theme of personal interest. 2 ) List ideas available from popular culture that are suitable to your theme. Brainstorm, ideate, be sure to do this step it is vital to your overall success!! 3 ) Using memory or actual visual assistance create a drawing showing the following : a ) SPACE AND DEPTH b ) OVERLAPPING c ) SIZE AND SCALE 4 ) Arrange your ideas in a visually interesting way. Fill the page, do not be afraid to show only a portion or part of an object. 5 ) Create a sloppy copy and eventually a final copy worthy of adding color to. 6 ) The final copy will be transferred to the appropriate paper by tracing or free hand. 7 ) Tape the paper to be colored inside of a creased newspaper. This will protect the picture and keep pastel debris to a minimum. 8 ) Place your name on the outside cover to identify your picture. 9 ) Carefully watch the demonstration on ways to use the oil pastels so you can blend, mix and learn interesting pastel techniques. 10 ) Fill the entire page with color, even the background negative spaces.
