2 THE SOMATIC MOVEMENT PRACTITIONER TRAINING A BODY ORIENTED EXPERIENTIAL METHOD Answers to questions on health and wellbeing often lay in the body itself. Somatic Movement s body oriented experiential approach, helps us learn how to acknowledge and understand the body s signals. By allowing these signals to have their place and function, we increase our ability to translate them into health, wellbeing and effective action Jacques van Eijden SOMATIC MOVEMENT TRAINING Somatic Movement is used worldwide as a body oriented and experiential method in counselling, coaching and caring of people. The Somatic Movement Practitioner Training at the consists of five Courses (five days each) that are offered every year. All Courses are accredited through ISMETA and KTNO and can be taken separately and in any combination. Together the five different Courses constitute the Training to become a Certified Somatic Movement Practitioner. WHO WILL BENEFIT FROM TAKING THE COURSES? The Programme offers training for individuals interested in working with Somatics in their current profession and/or are interested in becoming a Somatic Movement Practitioner, opening new professional opportunities. Are you working in healthcare, education, the arts, sports & fitness, counselling, and/or human resource? Are you ready for a change? With a desire to deepen and broaden your work and/ or start a new professional? Would you like to work with movement, dance, manual techniques, breath and voice, embodied awareness, as well as verbal techniques and the creative process? Do you have an affinity with experiential, intuitive as well as academic learning? Would you like to work with the physical, emotional and cognitive self of your clients or students, based on a clear method? Do you learn from participating in short intensives periods with a constructive professional group of people? Then the Somatic Movement Practitioner Training is the right choice. LOCATION The Courses are held at GROND, a beautifully located Training Centre in the rural North of the Netherlands. See groningen/vergaderlocatie-groningen/grond

3 SOMATIC MOVEMENT TRAINING Very enriching material, both professionally as well as personally Student PILLARS SOMATICS The method is a body oriented and experiential way of dealing with questions, challenges and/ or problems concerning health, wellbeing and effective action. In this approach the physical and psychological aspects are considered to be closely interlinked and inseparable. The five Pillars are the five competencies taught in the Training and applied by a Somatic Movement Practitioner in counselling, coaching and caring of people. THE 5 COMPETENCIES The 5 Competencies of a Somatic Movement Practitioner are: 1. Soma Mapping (working with a method) 2. Embody Embrace Empower Process (the embodiment process) 3. PEACE-ful Communication (effective communication) 4. Experiential Learning (combining knowledge and experience) 5. Somatic Skills (body oriented skills) 1. Soma-Mapping is used by practitioners to map the question or problem at hand. Physical and the related psychological aspects are named and put on the Soma Map. Together client and Somatic Movement Practitioner design a plan of action using the Balance and Integration principles and techniques. Goal is to systematically support the client in his improvement process. 2. Embody - Embrace - Empower is the cycle used at the heart of our process-based approach. Embodiment means living your life here and now. The second component teaches how to embrace experiences and the third how to derive strength and understanding from the experience. 3. PEACE - ful Communication. The concepts of Presence, Ease, Affectivity, Creativity and Effectiveness are the components of this specific way of communication. Together they create the basis of all verbal and non-verbal interactions. 4. Experiential Learning is based on the interweaving of knowledge, experience and intuition. The recognition of different forms of knowledge is of great importance. Relying on intuition as well as the smart use of knowledge is fundamental to learning. 5. Somatic Movement Practitioners use the following Somatic Skills: embodied consciousness, manual and verbal techniques, posture and movement techniques and breathing and vocalisation.

4 BALANCE AND INTEGRATION THEMES When addressing questions on health and wellbeing, the method focuses on Balance and Integration themes. Defining and working with issues belonging to these themes - giving them a sense of place and function in people s lives - will make questions manageable and solvable. The principles and techniques used when working with these issues are rooted in the experiential study of the structural and functional aspects of the body (anatomy, physiology, embryogenesis and kinesiology). Each Course focuses on a specific theme that is connected to the corresponding systems of the body and the Integrative (Body Mind) principles and techniques. The five Course themes are: External Balance (Course 1) Internal Balance (Course 2) Development (Course 3) Guidance (Course 4) Organisation (Course 5) I did not know I missed understanding and compassion that much. But when I got it, it touched me deeply. Student 2014

5 SOMATIC MOVEMENT COURSE - EXTERNAL BALANCE STANCE IN LIFE THEME External Balance addresses one s dynamic stance in life. It is about our posture, the way we stand; the way we move through life. But also about how we deal with the forces that affect us and how we develop our strength and manage our inadequacies. PRINCIPLES AND TECHNIQUES External Balance covers the principle of Tensegrity, working with both gravitational as well as tensile forces. The body systems involved in Tensegrity, create a sense of balance in our posture, gestures, movement and actions BODY SYSTEMS The focus will be on the skeletal, articular, muscular and connective tissue systems. APPLICATION External Balance supports you in understanding and working with effective posture (stance), a balanced use of effort (action and rest), good use of tone (not only in posture but also in muscles, tissues and cells), and the balance between flexibility and stability. All of these contribute to finding a sense of ease as we move through life. DURATION AND LOCATION The Course is held over 5 days, from Wednesday afternoon through to Sunday afternoon. Meals and overnight stay are at the Course location. The Courses are held at GROND, a beautifully located Training Centre in the rural North of the Netherlands. See COSTS AND APPLICATION The Tuition Fee for the Course is 600. The costs for room and board are not included. With registration for more than one Course and payment in advance, a 10% discount will be offered. Apply at or send an to info@somaticmovementinstitute.com. DATES October 8 12, 2014 October 7 11, 2015

6 SOMATIC MOVEMENT COURSE - INTERNAL BALANCE VITALITY AND SELFCARE THEME Internal Balance is about vitality and health. Understanding the need to take care of ourselves, of each other and the environment; to feel connected. Taking the time to process, to assimilate and digest. To rest, recuperate and/or heal in an ongoing and balanced way. PRINCIPLES AND TECHNIQUES Internal Balance covers the principle of Homeo-dynamics, a dynamic form of homeostasis. The body systems involved with Homeo-dynamics create inner balance. Inner balance is intimately related to the functioning of the eco-system of which we all are an integral part. BODY SYSTEMS The focus will be on the embodiment of the digestive system, the circulatory (i.e. cardiovascular, lymphatic and cerebrospinal systems), and the respiratory system. APPLICATION Internal Balance supports working with vitality and self-care. Improving a balanced metabolism (nutrition and energy management) and temperature regulation. Optimal cardiovascular circulation as well as the flow of tissue fluid and lymph are addressed. Internal Balance applications have a positive effect on the digestive process and breathing patterns. 7 7 SOMATIC MOVEMENT COURSE - DEVELOPMENT USING YOUR POTENTIAL THEME We are endowed with immediate responses such as reflexes and we move through designated patterns of movement during specific phases in live. Development is about our intrinsic and acquired life forces, aiding us in utilising our full potential. PRINCIPLES AND TECHNIQUES Growth and Development relates to the principle of Spiralled Transformation, development is regarded as a cyclical rather than a linear process. We work with the knowledge and understanding of embryogenesis and sensorimotor development. BODY SYSTEMS The systems addressed are the neuroendocrine system, the neuromuscular system and the urogenital system. The focus will be on the Immediate Responses (e.g. the primitive and postural reflexes), the Developmental Forces and Patterns (e.g. contralateral movement). It also includes the embodiment of both ontogenetic and phylogenetic development. APPLICATION Development supports you in working with learning disabilities, intellectual development, improving postural and movement problems as well as communication topics. DURATION AND LOCATION The Course is held over 5 days, from Wednesday afternoon through to Sunday afternoon. Meals and overnight stay are at the Course location. The Courses are held at GROND, a beautifully located Training Centre in the rural North of the Netherlands. See COSTS AND APPLICATION The Tuition Fee for the Course is 600. 8 8 SOMATIC MOVEMENT COURSE - GUIDANCE CHOOSING DIRECTION THEME Guidance is about making sustainable choices to achieve a real and lasting difference. Questions like: What moves us, what really motivates us, what is our vision and mission in life? are at the base of these choices. PRINCIPLES AND TECHNIQUES Guidance covers the principle of Creative Perception, working with Sensorimotor Integration and Perceptual Learning. Here we focus on aspects like sensing, perceiving, observing and participating. Making choices, noticing, recording, remembering, reflecting and contemplating. Both knowing and not knowing are an important part of Perceptual Learning, this includes working with conscious, subconscious and unconscious processes. BODY SYSTEMS Guidance is supported by body systems like the nervous system, the senses and the neuroendocrine system. Guiding aspects of specific cell and tissue are also involved. Realising the existence of multiple forms of intelligence (e.g. cognitive, verbal, kinaesthetic and musical) is crucial in working with Guidance. APPLICATION Guidance supports you in working with the different ways of making choices. It will give you the ability to see your options and to keep them open and available. It will help you to come to effective action. It also aids in dealing with obstacles and the consequences of the choices made. 9 9 SOMATIC MOVEMENT COURSE - ORGANISATION CLAIMING SPACE THEME The theme Organisation addresses how we deal with stress(es) and strains, our need for support and ways of finding our strength and accomplishing our goals. Organisation is also about the way we shape our lives and how we live in the given time and space. PRINCIPLES AND TECHNIQUES Working with Organisation we cover the principle of Dynamic Patterning, the cyclical self-organisation of our life in terms of space and time. This manifests itself in the way we are aware of the (public) space inside and outside the body, the way we own our personal space and share space but also in working with choosing direction, positioning ourselves as well as awareness of proportions and dimensions. Organisational aspects of time are e.g. the phrasing of our activities, respecting biological rhythms and changing tempo. BODY SYSTEMS In Organisation we focus on the experience of time and space. This means e.g. working with the different anatomical levels of organisation, from cellular via tissue levels all the way to the interconnected systems of the body. It also includes the way the body is organised schematically (e.g. central or peripheral) and in regions (e.g. shoulder or lower back area). Organisation also includes awareness of the space around us (e.g. directions, dimensions and planes) as well as the experience of time (e.g. rhythms and phrasing). APPLICATION Organisation supports you in working with communication and cooperation. The ability to be present, to pull one s weight and to claim one s space. Handling time (time management, impatience, stress), a sense of self-worth, positioning oneself and a sense of belonging are examples of working with Organisation. It provides tools to facilitate and invite self-organisation.
