Version: 1 Page 3 1 INTRODUCTION Since February 13 th 2015, the bulk processed MERIS FRS L2 dataset is available for users on DissHarm (via MERCI/HTTP and FTP) together with previously released FRS L1b data. The complete MERIS Full Resolution Full Swath L1b and L2 data archive of the Envisat mission spanning from May 17 th 2002 through April 8 th 2012 is hence available directly online. The key achievements and activities regarding the MERIS FR products quality control of the input products comprise: Implicit quality control of MERIS Lv0 products based on filenames. Development of Quality Check tools for investigating the MERIS FRS L1b full archive automatically. Definition of new Quality tests for MERCI. Visual check of Lv 1 products that have been identified as suspect. Compilation of the Lv 1 quality check results in a data base. The following two figures show the yearly coverage of MERIS FR and RR products for the period until This document summarizes the methods and results of the QA on L0, L1b and L2 of MERIS FR v2013.

Version: 1 Page 5 2 LEVEL 0 - QUALITY ASSESSMENT 2.1 Data source Filename: E-PAC MERIS L0 - NAS inventory.xls, provided by ESA. 2.2 Summary E-PAC MERIS (included in datasource) Category Nominal Quarantine 2203 Total Number of products Current analysis (BC) The MERIS L0 quality assessment has been performed implicitly, based on the product filenames. All products were considered (Nominal and Quarantine). Category Number of products Missing orbits: 7269 Short (< 7 sec): 1135 Exact Duplicates: 178 Totally included: 5167 Overlapping: 9782 Sum: 23531

Version: 1 Page Relative orbits Frequency distribution Relative orbits shall fulfill the following constraint: 1 <= rel_orbit <= 501 Highest values exceeded 501: Remark: The relative orbits have to be updated/corrected. 2.4 Absolute orbits Products in quaratine were omitted from this analysis. Orbit numbers were validated by the constraint abs_orbit > 0: 1. Two products have an orbit ID equal to zero: Remark: Products should be removed: since they appear to be duplicates for abs_orbit Other products ( ) have negative orbit numbers indicating an integer data type problem (signed vs unsigned integer): Workaround: Correct numbers are equal to abs_orbit

Version: 1 Page 7 The following numbers of missing products were found: Year First orbit Last orbit ENVISAT orbits Missing FR orbits Missing FR orbits [%] (4378 *)) 3045 (3608 *)) 79.8 (82.4 *)) Sum: (52867 *)) 7781 (8344 *)) 14,9 (15.8 *))% Numbers in parentheses consider the first (missing) 563 products in addition. Approximately 15 % of the orbits are missing. Extremely high numbers of missing FR orbits occurred in 2002 and Neglecting these years, 3023 of orbits are missing, resulting in 7 % in total. This result is comparable to the value achieved for RR (see table below).

Version: 1 Page 8 Year ENVISAT orbits Missing RR orbits from LRAC archive TOTAL= %= n/a 5.5% Reference: IDEAS MERIS Reduced Resolution (RR) Level 0 Dataset Consolidation (MERIS SPPA Team Stacey Hopkins) 2.5 Orbit duration A few Lv0 products have wrong timestamps, e. g. the following stop dates/times are lesser than the start date/times: Year abs_orbit start_time stop_time Duration_seconds T10:30: T10:30: T04:40: T15:43: T13:52: T00:48: T20:14: T17:07: T19:24: T17:15: Remark: These products will be omitted from the following calculations. Remark: Due to rounding errors within this analysis, durations below 1 second might be lesser than 0. The corresponding results range between10-7 and These values should be replaced by 0.5 seconds.

Version: 1 Page Shorts Number of products having a duration ranging between 0 and < 7 seconds: Year Num_short_products Sum: 1135

Version: 1 Page Exact Duplicates Number of exact duplicates: Year Num_products_exact_duplicate Sum: 223

Version: 1 Page Overlapping products Totally included Number of overlapping products totally included in another product: Year Num_incl_in_prev Sum: 5866 Constraints: - Order by abs_orbit and start_time - Absolute_orbit > 0 - Stop > Start - product not in quarantine - Duration >= 7s Main constraint: - Starts after and ends before previous product.

Version: 1 Page Partially overlapping products Number of partially overlapping products: Year Num_overlapping Sum: Constraints: Main constraint: - Order by abs_orbit and start_time - Absolute_orbit > 0 - Stop > Start - product not in quarantine - Duration >= 7s - Starts between start and stop of previous Lv0 product and stops after previous product or vice versa "starts before" and "ends between".

Document: MERIS FRv2013_TN_QA_ESA.docx Version: 1 Page 13 3 LEVEL 1B QUALITY ASSESSMENT 3.1 Description For the quality assessment of MERIS L1b products the following quality criteria have ben defined: 1. Criteria for products to be removed from the archive: Blank product Short product (< 7 seconds) Duplicate product 2. Criteria for products to be segregated, i. e. products which should be used carefully: Blank lines not flagged invalid Shifted geolocation Wrong colours Horizontal and vertical stripes Repetitive lines Data obtained during manoeuvres such as spectral campaigns and Envisat orbital lowering, degraded quality or acquisition problems The products, which are affected by the errors - short, duplicate and blank, have been selected to be removed. The quality of data within the archive obtained throughout manoeuvres and spectral campaignsas well as products known to be adversely affected by the Envisat orbital lowering and products with degraded quality (acquisition problems...) cannot be guaranteed and should be viewed with caution. They have been selected to be segregated. Errors related to geolocation, wrong colours, horizontal or vertical stripes and repetition have been observed in the remaining unusable products. These errors often occur in combinations. They have been selected to be segregated also. Finally, segregated products contain errors which probably will be recovered on a later stage with suitable tools or they are only partially affected by errors. Altogether, usable products were identified in the ENVISAT MERIS FR L1b data and usable products were identified in the ENVISAT MERIS FR L2 data.

Version: 1 Page 14 The following tables summarize which products are influenced by erroneous data. Category Criteria Description Removed Blank Short Duplicates (Exact or fully included duplicate) no lines with data products less than 7 seconds products which have the same starting time (exact duplicate) and duration or which are temporarily and spatially included Segregated Missing data (not "totally" blank) Geolocation Stripes or wrong colours Repetition lines Special event (Calibration, Campaign or orbit manoeuvre) few blank lines within the product wrong geolocation, mainly caused by missing lines one camera clearly different than the others horizontal or vertical stripes wrong colours These errors often occur in combination with missing data and geolocation errors. repetition of lines in several locations of the product The following section includes the illustratation of the errors observed in the MERIS FR L1b data (Chapter 3.2).

Additionally the results of the analysis during further processing of MERIS L1b data to MERIS L2 data has been also assessed. The following two sections include the illustration of the errors observed in the MERIS FR L2 data (Chapter 4.2) and the results of QA for MERIS L2 products (Chapter 4.3). 4.2 Examples of erroneous MERIS FR L2 products The following images illustrate the errors observed in the MERIS FR L2 data, which have been propagated from Level 1 (see Figure 3-1 to Figure 3-8): Figure 4-1: Example for vertical fine stripes (MER_FRS_2PPDSI _080919_ _00179_49331_2233.N1). The MERIS Quality Working Group has recommended that ESA implements the segregation of a selection of MERIS products from the main archive. The aim of this decision is to allow for the clear distinction of data known to be of non-nominal quality, without removing them from the archive completely. This README file gives: 1. Explanation on the limitations posed by Case II Waters and the known discrepancies concerning the accuracy of the Case II Waters algorithms. 2. A brief explanation of the scenarios for which some data have been segregated 3. Error description for segregated products 4. List of segregated orbits and the reasons for segregation (note that the orbit numbers in this list correspond to those in the filenames of the MERIS products v2013) orbits known to be affected by Orbital Manoeuvres. orbits known to be affected Spectral Calibration Campaigns. products known to be adversely affected by the Envisat orbital lowering. products with degraded quality (acquisition problems...) 5. List of Level 1 (MER_FRS_1P) corrupted products that have been replaced in the dissemination server by nominal quality products 6. List of Level 1 (MER_FRS_1P) that have been removed from the dissemination servers (exact duplicates, blank, short, corrupted...) 7. MER_FRS_1P products during special events, such as Calibration, Spectral characterisation or Orbit manoeuvre For further information, please submit queries via the ESA Earth Observation Helpdesk: ================================= 1 - Case II Waters Advisory Note ================================= Case II waters are complex waters found within inter-coastal zones, which are influenced by a multitude of parameters. As a result, the optical properties of such waters are highly variable and are controlled by three independent components: Phytoplankton and their associated debris, Dissolved organic matters of terrigenous origin, known variously as yellow substance, Gelbstoff, Gilvin or CDOM (coloured dissolved organic matter), Mineral particles and various suspended sediments. The changes made to the Case II waters algorithm throughout the 3rd Reprocessing are detailed within the C2R ATBD at: Case II waters require the separation of different optical components, currently achieved via a series of BEAM plug-ins, designated to the atmospheric correction and retrieval of oceanic constituents.

Document: MERIS FRv2013_TN_QA_ESA.docx Version: 1 Page 27 Recent findings by the MERIS QWG, have found that these algorithms are not reliable following user reported problems with the bands associated with Case II waters, such as the Algal_2 band. In particular, a discrepancy has been observed within the unrealistic correlation between optical chlorophyll values and acquisition seasonality. Therefore, it has been proposed that the algorithms associated Case II Waters be revised throughout 4th Reprocessing activities. ==================================================== 2 - Scenarios (Manoeuvres and Spectral Calibration) ==================================================== Instrument Mode during Orbital Manoeuvres: MERIS remained within OPERATION/ON mode Spectral Calibration Campaigns: The spectral calibration activities performed during the MERIS commissioning phase comprised three different measurement types: The Spectral calibration mode made use of the on-board calibration mechanism to deploy an Erbium doped Spectralon TM diffuser plate, offering a number of spectral absorption features which could be measured by 15 adjacent narrow bands (circa 408 & 522nm.) Observation of natural targets with the bands configured around solar Fraunhofer absorption lines (at 393, 485, 588, 655, 855 and 867 nm). Observation of natural targets with the bands configured around the oxygen O2-A absorption lines (760 nm). Therefore, the quality of data within the archive obtained throughout Manoeuvres and Spectral Campaigns cannot be guaranteed and should be viewed with caution. ==================================================== 3 - Error description for removed and/or segregate products ==================================================== Products with errors but containing larger parts which are not affected by the error and which probably will be recovered on a later stage with suitable tools. Those products might be partly usable. They have been selected to be segregated. other products, which are too havily affected by the errors have been selected to be removed. #Category #Error #Description To be removed Blank - no or only very few lines with data To be removed Short - product duration less than 55000ms To be removed Duplicate - product of same starting time and duration as another product or product totally included in another product Segregated Special event - calibration, campaign or orbit manoeuvre Segregated Missing data - few blank lines within the product, i. e. not "totally" blank Segregated Geolocation - wrong geolocation, mainly caused by missing lines Segregated Stripes or colours - one camera clearly different compared to the others or horizontal lines Segregated Repetition lines - repetition of lines in several locations of the product Remarks: - Stripes or colours often occur in combination with missing data and geolocation errors. - Blank, short and duplicate products are considered as corrupt, i. e. categorised as "to be removed". All other products are considered as segregated. ===================================================== 4 - List of segregated orbits (n = 1522, not corrupt) =====================================================
