Web Professionals: Using WYSIWYG Web Editors versus Hand Coding Three Points of View 1. WYSIWYG vs. Hand Coding, the Great Debate: What is so great About Hand-Coding HTML? By Jennifer Kyrnin, About.com Guide In a newsletter I receive a recent thread asked the question What is so great about Hand Coding?. The poster was curious as to why someone who could create wonderful pages with a WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) HTML editor, such as FrontPage or Dreamweaver would be overlooked in a job search, in favor of someone with direct HTML experience. It is common for hiring managers and HR departments to prefer someone with direct HTML experience to someone who has only created web pages with an editor. This is true, even when applying for a more creative position such as web designer.

In my own experience, I worked at a company that used to market a WYSIWYG HTML editor. When I was in the job interview, I asked my manager if I would be required to use that editor when I built pages for the company. I was told that they preferred a developer who was comfortable outside of a visual editor and liked to work directly with HTML. Many hiring managers look for the ability to write HTML from scratch not because it is faster, but often because it shows that the developer has the ability to go beyond tools to create their pages. If you know how to write HTML from scratch, you can always move to an editor, but it s very difficult to move from an editor to straight coding. Knowing HTML can allow you to make changes faster than someone who writes with an editor. For example, I work directly on the web server and when I find an error I just go straight into the HTML, make the change, and save the file. My coworkers who use editors would have to download the file to their hard drive, open it in their editor, make the change, save the file, and re-upload it to the server. Most of the time, that type of time difference won t make a difference, but that one time it does, I m glad that I know how to write the HTML.

Knowing HTML will also allow you to correct errors that WYSIWYG editors might add to the code. Some editors add strange tags and attributes that can cause less compliant browsers to choke. And sometimes you can get the exact effect you re looking for more easily by writing the HTML by hand. WYSIWYG editors add a lot to a web developer s repertoire. They allow you to do certain tasks more quickly than you could type them by hand. For example, complex nested tables with many rows and columns are often easier to write using a visual editor than by hand. Dreamweaver offers a lot of tools within the editor to add features that can be tricky to write by hand. One of my favorite uses of that editor is for creating DHTML animations. You place the image you would like animated and then drag it to where you want it to move. Then you simply set the number of frames in the animation, and Dreamweaver writes the script for you. Frontpage offers a great site management system. It is visual so it is easy to use. Frontpage also has a lot of integration with other Microsoft products.

Using a WYSIWYG editor is also a lot easier to learn for the beginner. It s often just like the word processor you use all the time. But once you ve learned the editor, you might want to learn how to edit the HTML directly to add special features like JavaScript to anchors, etc. Whether you use WYSIWYG editors or write HTML from scratch, you ll get decent results. Keep in mind that most hiring managers still want someone who can edit the HTML, but it s not hard to learn, and you re at the right site to start. 2. WYSIWYG vs. HTML Editor By David Aamodt. Web-Design-Software-Review.Toptenreviews.Com If you talk to the international ranks of the web design community s elite, it s a no brainer hard code is the way to go. Developers will tell you that you can never trust a program to effectively bridge the gap between visual design and the elegant efficiency of straight markup languages. While this might be true to a degree, the

commitment, education and time that go into learning complicated platforms for web design along with the ever changing languages used for app and site development basically prohibit mere civilians from participation. A basic knowledge of markup languages, CSS, Flash and JavaScript will go a long way in web design, but we don t think a relative inexperience with HTML, website design, databases or image editing is any reason to shy away from giving web design a go. With some patience, effort and aid from a well designed program, anybody should be able to create an engaging website. We ve put together a list pros and cons for you to consider as you decide between choosing a code-based HTML editor or a full visually oriented WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) site designer. HTML Editor Pro Less net data for faster load times and lower bandwidth Specify exact resolution and dimensions on photos Fewer compatibility problems No unfixable errors

Con Requires knowledge of design languages such as HTML, CSS, PHP and JavaScript Time consuming Difficult to create interactive content WYSIWYG Pro Significantly faster than text editor Requires no knowledge of programming languages Produce graphic intensive pages easily Con Create larger files Compatibility issues Can require proprietary file formats

3.WYSIWYG vs. HTML Coding WYSIWYG Versus Coding: HTML With A Purpose by Jim D. Ray About the Author: Jim D. Ray is a seasoned web developer and president of Web Presence, a national web design firm exclusively serving the small business market sector. After years of working with entrepreneurs who developed their first web site using an image-based editor, the new world of internet marketing has placed a stronger emphasis on web development that conforms to technical concerns such as search engine optimization and multi-browser compatibility. Wigging Out WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get, pronounced whizzy wig ) web site editing programs can allow anyone to develop rich, full-feature web sites without a working knowledge of HTML (Hypertext Markup Language). Many of these programs feature a drag and drop user interface, accomplishing eye-catching web site development in much the same way one might perform desktop publishing.

However, many, if not most of these programs generate HTML files that oftentimes results in compatibility issues. A few key concerns in developing web sites using WYSIWYG editors include: Text content may not be positioned at the top of the HTML file, which search engines like Google use to determine search engine ranking; Font sizes may not be fixed, displaying garbled or overlapping text; Content placement may not appear uniformly in less popular, yet fully functional browsers; Future expandability of your web site may be limited to the program s design interface. Although many WYSIWYG programs are capable of developing visually appealing web design, HTML automatically generated by the program for upload to the World Wide Web may limit your web site s compatibility and expandability in the long term. Coding by Hand

Coding HTML by hand can be a challenging, yet worthwhile endeavor, as the flexibility of hand-coded HTML measurably outweighs the time required to become familiar with the language. Although a relatively simple programming language, HTML is a diverse subject with many facets that can be used to create a dynamic, rich web presence. There are a number of on-line tutorials offering basic and advanced HTML guidance, as well as HTML s secondary offshoot languages, such as DHTML and XML. A search on Google ( using terms such as HTML how to or HTML tutorial will produce a myriad of results for new and advanced programmers. Coding your web site by hand not only allows for broadened aesthetic possibilities, but also provides greater flexibility for ensuring your site is optimized for search engine results and display compatibility. Additional benefits of hand-coded HTML include: Wider range of design options such as of tables and CSS (Cascading Style Sheets)

Faster page load, by reducing excess code generated by many WYSIWYG editors Increased compatibility with future expansion needs of your site, including forms, mini-applications (often referred to as scripts), and e-commerce features
