CHAPTER 9= Life in Colonial Williamsburg
Williamsburg was one of the most important colonies. Knowing about this will help us later on. We have set goals to help us learn about Chapter Nine. This set of goals will help us understand the history of Williamsburg. We will study what they did in everyday life and what the slaves did. What were the fun things they did? We are going to do different stations and talk with our group. What did they do that is similar to Lexington? If we gather information, we are going to find out soon. Williamsburg was very important to us because it was part of our early history. We will learn a lot about chapter nine by reaching our goals.
With your partner, describe the pictures on page 86. After to read the introduction define the three vocabulary words. Williamsburg- a city in southern Virginia, the Capital of It is a normal life back in the older days. They have carriages instead of cars. They have old looking cloths. He is riding in a carriage. And they carry guns everywhere. 2-List at least three reasons why Williamsburg was an important town in Colonial Virginia. It was the largest American colony.williamsburg was the center of government, education, culture, and Virginia Government- the governing body of a nation, state, or community. Culture- refers to peoples beliefs and ways of life. 2-:List at least three reasons why Lexington is very important to you? We have family and friends here. We get supplies here. We go to school here. religion. It was the capital of Virginia. 3-Describe the education of both boys and girls in Colonial Williamsburg. 3-Compare your education today to education in Williamsburg. The girls stayed at home for school. The boys did go to Our education is better because the teachers know more school. The girls learned from there mothers. Boys could than they did back then. Boys and girls go to school even attend colleges. Some had to learn manners. The together now. We use technology. We all learn the same boys learned, reading, writing, grammar, and arithmetic. things.
4- List and explain the three types of the craftspeople found in a shoemaker s shop. Master craftsmen- They were very experienced and did the most difficult parts of the work. Construction workers build Journey men- Skilled workers who did not own their own shops houses. Bakers make cakes, Apprentices Usually did simpler jobs and watched the other works do the more difficult ones. 5-Describe the way the people of Williamsburg used their free time after a hard days work. Playing games, fancy balls, family gatherings, dinners together, and wealthy men got together to discuss politics 6-List at least three things you learned about government in Williamsburg. Members of the assembly created and voted on laws. As Virginia s capitol Williamsburg was the place where government leaders met to make decisions. Lawmakers worked in the capitol building in a group called the assembly. They had to belong to the Anglican Church. 4-List at least three important craftsmen that you know in Lexington. cookies and bread. Teachers provide education for students. 5-How do the people of Lexington learn about the activities and politics of this community. We see posters about them, read newspapers, receive s, listen to radio, and watch TV. 6-List at least three things that you know about government in Lexington. We have a mayor and city council. People are elected to be on the city council. They keep our city safe and running smoothly.
7-Describe the jobs and conditions of the slaves in Williamsburg. Jobs: Shoemakers, carpenters, seamstresses, plantation workers Conditions: By relying on one another they looked after family members and tried to create strong family ties, 8-List at least two facts that show that the Church of England (Anglican Church) was an important part of the life in colonial Virginia. It was given on important setting in the center of the town. It was the official church of England. 9-Time to think.now that you know the history of Williamsburg, how you can describe the life in this colony? It was like all colonies in that time period. Having slaves, shoe makers, and carriages. It seemed quite peaceful. It sounded like everyone got along all right. 7-Describe at least three jobs that you know in Lexington. Works: police, carpenter, doctor Conditions: We have laws that control how workers can be treated today so conditions are better. 8-How many Churches do you know in Lexington and Why they are important for the community. There are too many to name. They are important because we all have different religions. So we need all of the different kinds of churches. 9-Time to think:now how can you describe Lexington community? It is big. It has a lot of stores and churches. We do not have the stuff like they did back then we just go to shoe stores instead of shoemakers. We have technology.
Conclusion: We learned a lot more stuff then we knew before. We didn t know that they had a way different life style than we do today. We didn t know that they had shoe makers, and that they dressed up that weird. We didn t know that they all together and played games. Also that the men would get together and talk about politics. We noticed our community is a lot different. We don t have shoe makers, we don t ride in carriages anymore. We have a lot nicer things than they did back then. We enjoyed this project a lot because we got to feel like them and do what they did. Yes, We think that it will help so We know how they about life back then. They had to work a little harder than us we think. We will know more of our history. The last thing why we think it will help me is because if we want to tell people about Williamsburg we could.
