1 A CURRICULUM POLICY FOR ENGLISH This schl plicy reflects the cnsensus f pinin f the whle teaching and supprt staff and has the full agreement f the gverning bdy. This plicy reflects the philsphy f the Equality Plicy, the Missin Statement and the Schl Aims in relatin t the whle curriculum. 1. Intrductin This plicy statement utlines the purpse, nature and management f English and literacy taught at Rwan Gate Primary Schl. The implementatin f the plicy is the respnsibility f all teaching staff, under the guidance f the Literacy c-rdinatrs. 2. Aims We aim fr ur children t: a) Have an interest in and enjyment f bks. b) Cmmunicate, read and write with cnfidence, fluency and understanding t their level, supprted by AAC. c) Be able t express their pinins and justify their preferences abut a wide range f fictin/nn-fictin texts, given resurces t d s where necessary. d) Be able t access reading materials as required. e) Shw an interest in wrds/bjects/symbls and their meaning; develping a grwing vcabulary in spken and written frms r alternative cmmunicatin mdes. f) Experience and understand a range f genres - be able t recrd/write in a variety f styles and frms apprpriate t the situatin. g) Be fluent and cnfident speakers/cmmunicatrs acrss a range f audiences using apprpriate technlgy such as AAC. h) Be an active listener in a wide variety f circumstances. i) Develp their understanding and knwledge f phnics and utilise this in a range f reading/spelling based experiences, using the Read Write Inc. prgram as the prime apprach. j) Make use f ICT t develp, extend and enhance their literacy learning and presentatin. As teachers we aim t;

2 a) Assess, plan and resurce fr the specific needs f the children. b) T invlve all supprt staff in the planning, infrming them f the bjectives and intentins and making their rle clear. c) Share ur bjectives with parents. d) Prvide a stimulating learning envirnment with well paced challenging teaching. e) Meet the needs f individual children starting frm what the children knw, understand and can d. f) Set achievable learning targets and where apprpriate d this in cnjunctin with the children. g) Encurage the children t have high expectatins fr their persnal success in English. h) Give all children equal access t the English curriculum as laid ut by the Primary Framewrk fr Literacy. Crnwall Literacy and Read,Write Inc. are used as the main planning tls and children are assessed using Bsquared (P levels t Natinal Curriculum Levels). Teachers will: a) Have a clear understanding f the bjectives being taught, penly sharing these with the children and supprt staff. b) Plan fr well paced lessns which drive learning frward. c) Pass n their ptimism and high expectatins fr success t the children. d) Apprpriately use a range f teaching strategies, including: Whle class, small grup and 1:1 teaching. Demnstratin Mdelling Scafflding Explanatin Targeted questining Initiating and guided explratin Discussin and challenging ideas generated by the children. e) Listen and respnd t children in a sensitive and supprtive manner, discussing the children s successes and areas fr develpment. f) Be mindful f the literacy needs f the children in all subject areas, and differentiate questins and activities t allw all children access. g) Cnsider the pprtunities fr develping literacy skills acrss the curriculum. Time Allcatin Where apprpriate there will be 5 allcated literacy sessins per week. This may vary in sme classes e.g. the sessins may be shrter in rder t take int accunt the needs f

3 the children. In the Early Years Fundatin Stage, Literacy is nt taught in islatin and is an integral part f the learning experience acrss all areas f the EY curriculum. Ensuring Crss Curricular Links Staff will identify where apprpriate, n the fci f their medium term planning, any crss-curriculum links with Literacy. The use f ICT and AAC in Literacy During literacy teaching, ICT is used in a variety f ways acrss the schl. Cmmunicatin systems and switches will be used where apprpriate t augment children s expressive, receptive, reading and writing skills. Fcused ICT teaching supprts the English curriculum by develping children s cmpetency and skills. Planning All class teachers are respnsible fr prducing weekly plans using Crnwall literacy and the Natinal Curriculum fr English. They will: Identify clear learning bjectives Identify the apprpriate teaching and learning strategies required. Prvide balance and variety f cntent and learning styles fr children. Assess and plan fr the specific needs f children within their wn class whilst adhering t the prgressin laid dwn in the scheme. Make explicit the resurces needed t augment cmmunicatin/reading/writing fr apprpriate children. Differentiatin is achieved thrugh careful assessment f children s wrk and evaluatin/ bservatin sessins, and using this infrmatin t infrm shrt term planning, Individual Educatin Plans and individual tasks. Medium term plans differentiate t 3 levels. Planning fr the Early Years Fundatin Stage is taken frm the EYFS framewrk and differentiates t three levels. Cmmunicatin, language and literacy are planned fr acrss the seven areas f learning. Displays Where apprpriate, displays will take int accunt the schl s multi-mdal apprach t cmmunicatin s that as many children as pssible have access t the Literacy envirnment. Displays shuld include and reflect the multicultural nature f the schl and the curriculum, addressing any issues arund multiculturalism and cmmunity chesin. Text n the displays shuld be seen in a variety f frms e.g. handwritten by staff and children, wrd prcessed etc, s as t reflect the literary wrld we live in. Abve all, displays shuld reflect and celebrate achievements and the high standards expected f the children. Reading Material Acrss the range ur bks reflect the multicultural wrld that we live in.

4 There is a wide variety f reading material t cver many aspects and a wealth f resurces at the same level t prvide reinfrcement. Many texts are gruped int genres and themes utlined in the Crnwall Literacy Planning Dcument. Reading bks include fictin and nn-fictin bks frm the Read Write Inc scheme, Oxfrd Reading Tree scheme and Sunshine scheme and are clearly banded using clur cded levels apprpriate t their wrd level recgnitin. Assessment Individual targets are set fr children and where apprpriate they are set in cnjunctin with the children and are made visible t children when wrking. Teachers may anntate their daily plans t assess prgress by grups f children in the class, recrding achievements and/r highlighting areas f cncern fr the future. Where apprpriate class teachers keep reading recrds and guided reading recrds. Summative assessment f prgress in all areas f English allws teachers t frmally assess the P levels and Natinal Curriculum levels f all pupils in expressive and receptive cmmunicatin, speaking and listening, reading and writing. This infrmatin is then used t infrm teaching and t set individual and whle schl targets. Assessments are carried ut at the end f Key Stage 1 and 2 in accrdance with Natinal Curriculum assessment requirements, if apprpriate and the child is nt disapplied. Samples f literacy wrk are anntated and levelled t prvide a wrking dcument f P Level and NC exemplars. These samples are cllected by the c-rdinatrs and made accessible fr teachers, t demnstrate and supprt a wrking knwledge f the P scales and NC levels. This dcument is reviewed annually and supprts mderatin. IN additin t this, half termly mderatin is undertaken by class teachers fr all children s wrk acrss the schl. 3. Reprting t parents Reprting prcedures are in line with DfES regulatins. Parents receive an annual written reprt and are invited t tw parental interviews thrughut the academic year. 4. Equal Opprtunities Rwan Gate Primary Schl believes that all children have equal access t the English Curriculum regardless f race, gender, disability r religin. The schl will ensure that all children: Cver the cntent made statutry by the prgrammes f study within the Natinal Curriculum and Primary Framewrk fr Literacy. Access the curriculum at the apprpriate level, thus ensuring prgressin. Suitable resurces and learning envirnments will be available t enable children access t the learning required. Special educatinal Needs All children n the schl rle have SEN s belw are highlighted sme areas that we feel need particular mentin in this dcument.

5 Literacy will be taught t all children at a level apprpriate t them. The curriculum has been rganised s that children receive a brad and balanced curriculum with breadth f learning pprtunities even if their learning is limited. Differentiated activities and resurces will be used t meet the needs f the children. Wrk in literacy will take int accunt the targets set fr individual children in their Individual Educatin Prgrammes. Where necessary utside agencies will be invlved. Parents will be kept infrmed and encuraged t assist in helping with their child s learning. Vlunteers are used in schl t supprt grups/individual children, where apprpriate. Liaisn The c-rdinatrs reprt t the Head Teacher and Gvernrs with any relevant develpments. The schl have a Literacy Gvernr wh liaises with the crdinatrs. The c-rdinatrs attend lcal meetings and curses as apprpriate. All staff have access t relevant training curses and the pprtunity t infrm the crdinatrs n return, cascading infrmatin as apprpriate.
