Home and Art has been developed to provide an opportunity for asylum seeker and refugee artists to represent the dreams, memories and aspirations that make up the refugee experience. It proposes to present works by refugee artists in order to celebrate the important contribution that refugees are making to the cultural and social fabric of Australia. Walker Street Gallery & Arts Centre in Dandenong is preparing to stage an exhibition of artworks by asylum and refugee seeker artists in July Home and Art wants to recognise those artists from asylum and refugee seeker background who may have had to put their artist identity aside since arriving in Australia. In many cases, previous education, training, skills and passions have often needed to be put to one side by refugees while they establish themselves in a new land. There are two cash prizes available for the winning artists, as selected by an independent judge. A first prize of $3000 for an artist who lives anywhere in Australia and a smaller cash prize for an artist living in the City of Greater Dandenong. A further prize is available, offering an Artist in Residency studio space in Dandenong for three months. The artworks can be produced in any media including but not limited to painting, printmaking, sculpture, textiles, video, photography, or drawing. The content may tell the story of your journey to Australia or may reflect long standing artistic interests.

3 A number of artists from the selected finalists be supported for the cost of materials for the production or presentation of their work for this exhibition, up to the amount of $300. Any artist wishing to apply for this support grant for materials costs should indicate their anticipated costs on the application form. We are inviting artists to send us images of their work, a description of their artwork and contact details. The team at Walker Street Gallery will then review the images received and invite selected artists to join the exhibition. Artists eligible to contribute should have arrived in Australia after 1 January Artists can send their images on a USB stick, a DVD or via a Dropbox service. 4 Key exhibition dates Applications close: Monday 14 March 2016 Successful artists notified: Friday 8 April 2016 Notification to artists who have sought a support grant for materials: Friday 8 April 2016 Delivery of artworks by selected artists: on or before Monday 13 June 2016 Opening event and announcement of prize winners: Thursday 7 July 2016, 6.30pm Conditions of entry Refugees and former refugees who have arrived in Australia since January 2000 will be eligible to participate in the 2016 Home and Art exhibition selection. One application per artist Artwork must be an original two or three dimensional piece Artwork must be no larger than 2.0 metre wide by 2.0 metres high (due to gallery design) All applications to exhibit must be received at the Walker Street Gallery by close of business on Monday 14 March 2016 No late entries will be accepted. Artists must submit 4 6 images of their artworks on a CD or USB or them to Walker Street Gallery using a cloud based service with their application form. address walkerstgallery@cgd.vic.gov.au The artwork proposed for the exhibition should be clearly indicated. The images should be high resolution digital images at 300dpi in either TIFF or JPG format not exceeding 2MB, suitable for printing use in a catalogue. The application should also include the artist s CV Incomplete entries shall be deemed ineligible All artworks must be for sale. Walker Street Gallery will charge a commission of 25% for all sales.

5 Walker Street Gallery will notify all artists by post or if their application is successful or unsuccessful. If your application to exhibit is successful Selected artwork for the exhibition must be delivered to the Walker Street Gallery by 5pm, Monday 13 June 2016 to be included in exhibition Artwork must be supplied ready to hang or install, with wires, D-rings, screw eyes or other fixtures already attached Applicants should attach a fixed label to the back of the artwork with their name, address, phone number, title, medium and price, see below All artwork entered for the exhibition shall be for sale All prices provided by the artist should be exclusive of GST and exclusive of the gallery s commission Walker Street Gallery will take 25% commission on all sales Applicants accept full responsibility (and associated costs) for packing, transport and insurance of artwork to and from Walker Street Gallery Artists selected for the exhibition give permission for their works to be reproduced by print or electronic media for the purposes of advertising, promotion and archiving of the exhibition The opening function will be on Thursday 7 July 2016 at 6.30pm.
