Fishwicks PDF Requirements Before creating an Adobe PDF file to print, please ensure that the document meets our set requirements. Adobe PDF Files (Portable Document Format) Document: All print ready PDFs to be supplied at 100% of print size. Upscaling documents to bigger print sizes will result in loss of quality of images not prepared for that specific print size. Images: Use only high-resolution good quality images in your document to achieve best print results. 300 Dpi [Dot per inch] preferable for High resolution printing for Litho. 100 Dpi [Dot per inch] minimum resolution for Digital Printing placed at 100% of size. Ensure that the images used in the design application are all CMYK, SPOT or grayscale depending on the job being printed Litho or digital. Do not use RGB images, as we do not guarantee color accuracy and conversion to CMYK. Do not use any Spot Colors, as we do not guarantee color accuracy and conversion to CMYK for digital printing. Image resolution Four Color Print [CMYK]: All color artwork and/or images must be provided in CMYK (cyan, magenta, yellow, black) color mode. All black & white artwork and/or images must be provided in grayscale color mode. What is the difference between the RGB, CMYK : RGB refers to the primary colors of light, Red, Green and Blue, that are used in monitors, television screens, digital cameras and scanners. CMYK refers to the primary colors of pigment: Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Black. These are the inks used on the press in "4-color process printing", commonly referred to as "full color printing".
Four Color Print [CMYK] + Spot: All color artwork and/or images must be provided in CMYK (cyan, magenta, yellow, black) color mode and spot colors clearly defined. What is the difference between the CMYK and SPOT: CMYK refers to the primary colors of pigment: Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Black, as described above. Spot Color is reproduced by an opaque, premixed, standard ink chosen from a color system such as the Pantone Matching System. SPOT colors are used where accurate and consistent color reproduction is required in small or large areas of artwork. Black 4 Color Black or RGB Black for small text is advised against, including lines. We advise you to use a standard black. Black text should be 100% K only. Mixed values will cause printing problems when K is less than 100% (often occurring when converting colours or profiles). This is because it is a screen of black (i.e. regarded as dark grey), and will not trap. This is also a reason not to typeset in Photoshop. Check this by toggling black on and off using InDesign s separation preview palette (under Window-> Output) or Acrobat professional s output preview advanced menu). Black elements should disappear completely. (under Solid black backgrounds should be supplied either as 100% black or 100% black and 40% cyan, as 4 colour black with white reversed type are problematic on the printing press Fonts: Embed and subset fonts when creating PDF documents from Illustrator, InDesign, or Distiller. Embedding ensures that the original font is used to output the text, rather than a substituted font. Alternatively you can convert your fonts to outlines/paths depending on the authoring application. Outlining fonts will allow us to ensure text will not shift or default to another font. Note: Some font manufacturers restrict the embedding of font files. Restrictions apply to copying font software. Bleed: All documents supplied to include bleed. There are 2 kinds of bleed: A bleed can be a full bleed or partial bleed. With a full bleed you have objects running of your document on all sides. With a partial bleed you'll have a couple of elements running off the document. Standard Document measured in Millimeters (mm), the bleed should be minimum 3mm - 5mm maximum. Outdoor (x-large) Document measured in Millimeters (mm), the bleed should minimum 10mm - 50mm maximum.
Crop Marks: Crop marks are lines indicating where the paper should be cut to produce the correct size. Every industry-standard program on the market will do this automatically when selected(although there will be a few exceptions when you'll have to make them by hand). We suggest that you create your pdf bigger than the bleed area to reflect the crop marks outside the bleed area. [Offset your crops marks as per your bleed specifications for the document. Example if your bleed is 3mm, your crop marks need to be offset 3mm]. Die / Die Lines / Die Cut / Die Trace: Die cutting is a manufacturing process used to generate large numbers of the same shape or design. A dieline is used in graphic artwork as a guideline, indicating the die cut which is used for correct layout purposes in the finishing process. Create any color in your graphic design application and make it a spot color and name the color "Die". Create a new layer in your graphic design application and name the layer "Die" or "Foiling" or "Emboss" or Spot Varnish" or "Glue Area", etc relevant to the finishing requirement. Ensure that the "Die" is set to overprint. All die line paths must be a "Stroke" and not a "Fill" color. Any graphic artwork requiring die cutting must be supplied with bleed. Ensure that the "Die" is set to overprint. All die line paths must be a "Stroke" and not a "Fill" color. Any graphic artwork requiring die cutting must be supplied with bleed. Foiling, Embossing, Spot Varnish, Glue Area, Perforation, etc All of these elements must be set to overprint, and supplied in position on the final artwork. The colour must be named accordingly, as above heading. Create any color in your graphic design application and make it a spot color and name the color "Foiling" or "Emboss" or Spot Varnish" or "Glue Area". Trapping Do Not Trap we will sort this out for you. Trapping adjusts certain areas of print graphics to stop white gaps appearing between colours when printing. TRAPPING OFF & TRAPPING ON Notice when trapping is applied to a 100% black / 40% cyan you can see what goes under black is spread, but the cyan chokes, and this is what assists the press man when on the printing press.
Overprinting: By default, when you print opaque, overlapping colors, the top color knocks out the area underneath. You can use overprinting to prevent knockout and make the topmost overlapping printing ink appear transparent in relation to the underlying ink. The degree of transparency in printing depends on the ink, paper, and printing method used. OVERPRINT ON OVERPRINT OFF Safety Zone: All critical elements/information (text, page numbering, logos, etc.) must be kept at a minimum of 5mm inside the edge. NB- Saddle Stitched books get spine growth as the book increases in pages, so if it is to be designed with double page spreads on most pages, then at least 10mm safety zone needs to be applied, as spine growth can not be applied during imposing. The heavier the grammage the more it moves. Gloss art 115 gsm has 1mm per 32 pages Matt art 115gsm has 1,5 mm per 32 pages. Note. The above is a guideline and will vary for artwork and document sizes. Anything too close to the edge may be cut off during trimming. Other File Formats: In most cases we won t accept a.jpg /.TIF /.EPS format file as a press-ready or digital print file. We can use a high quality.jpg /.TIF /.EPS on condition that they meet the above guidelines for Document, Images, Four Color Print, Bleed, Crop Marks and Safety Zone. Special Instructions: Please specify any special instructions when uploading or delivering a file or contact us directly to discuss prior to hand over. Please indicate any specific printing requirements with a spot color (Dies, Foils, UV Varnish, Embossing, etc. Best Practice to create a Print Ready PDF: PDF/X-1a:2001, an ISO standard for graphic content exchange. Created PDF documents can be opened with Acrobat and Adobe Reader 4.0 and later. Best Practice to create a Print Ready PDF for Digital Print: High Quality Print. Created PDF documents can be opened with Acrobat and Adobe Reader 5.0 and later.
Adobe InDesign Files process using Adobe InDesign. However we can accept Adobe InDesign files, if the following criteria is met: We require all fonts and images used in your artwork to be supplied to us in a separately via the "package" function found under the "file" menu. You will need to compress these files using software such as Stuffit or WinZip before sending to us via . Please include a screen shot fo teh document so we can check it against the InDesign file so we can ensure nothing has moved. Please note this file will need to be proofed back to you before we process your order and this can lead to a delay in delivery. Images to be CMYK and high resolution which is at least 300dpi. All fonts must be embedded within the document. We prefer artwork to have corner crops marks added. Adobe Illustrator Files process using Adobe Illustrator.
