1 12 Jesus is A through Z ~L, Part 1~ Lamb of God, Last Adam, Light of the World, Lion of the Tribe of Judah All Staff Pre-Class Arrange tables and chairs. Pray for tonight s class. Have music playing. Take attendance. 20 min. REVIEW Review J adjectives/titles from last week, handing out mini candy canes as prizes as students answer questions. They can snack on them while they continue answering questions. Review previous lessons. See Jesus is A through Z Review Questions. Ideas: o Toss out candy for correct answers. o Form teams and play Bible baseball. o Form teams and play tic-tac-toe. (A correct answer allows a team to place its X or O. ) o Play musical chairs. If student answers a question correctly, he/she is NOT out. All Staff 20 min. BIBLE MEMORY WORK Students will work on memorizing doctrinal verses. Each student will have his/her own list or book to work from, containing a chart for teachers to initial as students quote the verses one at a time, two at a time, etc. (Teachers: Please read instructions on the Bible memory work charts.) Remind students that there will be prizes for those who pass with a score of 80 percent or better. Remind students that during Bible Memory Work time, everyone must be working! Encourage them to work together to memorize verses, as opposed to distracting each other. Divide the class into four groups: two each for 5- to 7-yearolds and 8- to 10-year-olds, one teacher with each group. To cut

2 down on the confusion and noise, two groups may leave the room to practice verses in another classroom, the hallway, etc. Coloring pages with the 10 Commandments or other Bible verses are available to help occupy visitors (or younger/distracted students) while their classmates are quoting verses. 5 min. RULES & PRAYER Review Power Hour Promises with the students, reminding them of proper behavior during class. Pray together, thanking God for your time together and praying that each person will understand and obey God s Word and grow into a strong Christian. 20 min. BIBLE LESSON Teacher Prep: Read Hebrews 9:22, John 1:29-34, Isaiah 53:5-7, 1 Corinthians 15:22 & 45, Romans 5:12-21, John 8:12, Revelation 5:5, and Revelation 12:11. Pray for anointing. Items Needed: Letter L, Part 1 posterboard; lamb (stuffed animal); flashlight (or other light); picture of fierce lion (or stuffed animal); printed words/pictures of Lamb of God, Last Adam, Light of the World, and Lion of the Tribe of Judah ( Jesus is Letter L, Part 1, Words-Pics visuals); Bible. Introduction Show the letter L, Part 1 posterboard. We are learning about Jesus character (who He is) and power (what He does) by exploring His titles and adjectives from A to Z. 3 What do you think about when you see a little lamb? (it s cute, innocent, timid, defenseless, etc.) What were lambs often used for in the Old Testament? (sacrifices) What is a sacrifice? (the killing of an animal as an offering to God) In the Old Testament, many, many cute, innocent, defenseless (use adjectives the students named earlier) lambs were sacrificed to God for the sins of people. Hebrews 9:22 says: without shedding of blood is no remission (forgiveness). Listen to this verse about a lamb: Read John 1:29 from your Bible. John the Baptist spoke these words when Jesus came to him at the Jordan River to be baptized. How is Jesus like a lamb? (innocent, a sacrifice, etc.) Listen to how Isaiah described Jesus as our Lamb: Read Isaiah 53:6-7 from your Bible. What does it mean that Jesus was brought as a lamb to the slaughter? (Jesus was innocent of sin, but He was sacrificed for our sins, and He didn t resist; He willingly laid down His life) Have a student attach the words Lamb of God to the L, Part 1 posterboard. Who was the first person created? (Adam) What did Adam do to bring death into the world? (he disobeyed God and ate of the fruit of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil) Was the fruit Adam ate an apple? (no; the fruit didn t come from an apple tree; we don t know what the fruit on the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil was like) Lesson 12 Jesus is ~L, Part 1~ Annette R. 4 Through Adam we have all inherited a sinful nature, as well as death. Who is the only man who never sinned? (Jesus Christ) Who is the only man who overcame death by rising from the dead? (Jesus Christ) Read 1 Corinthians 15:22 and 45 from your Bible. Jesus is called the Last Adam. Only He can reverse the problems started by the first Adam s sin. Have a student attach the words Last Adam to the L, Part 1 posterboard. Show flashlight (or other light). What are some types of lights? (flashlights, spotlights, light bulbs, sun, moon, stars, headlights, nightlights, etc.) What does light do for us? (helps us see better, gets rid of darkness, helps us be unafraid, helps plants grow, keeps us healthy [vitamin D], etc.) Read John 8:12 from your Bible. Since the time Adam and Eve sinned, the world has often seemed like a very dark and scary place. How is Jesus the Light of the World? (helps us see the sin in our lives, shows us the way to Heaven, gets rid of the darkness [sin] in our hearts, helps us to be unafraid, helps us grow, keeps us healthy, etc.) Have a student attach the words Light of the World to the L, Part 1 posterboard. Earlier we talked about Jesus being a lamb. What are some characteristics of a lamb that Jesus does NOT have? 5 What do you think about when you see a lion? (it s fierce, a bold hunter, king of beasts, king of the jungle, large teeth, scary, etc.) Read Revelation 5:5 from your Bible. What does prevailed mean? (won; defeated enemies) What is the tribe of Judah? (the tribe named after Jacob s [Israel s] fourth son; King David and Jesus Christ, his descendant, were both of the tribe of Judah) How is Jesus like a Lion? (he is powerful, defeats enemies, is kingly, can be scary [to evildoers], etc.) Have a student attach the words Lion of the Tribe of Judah to the L, Part 1 posterboard. Life Application Read Revelation 12:11 from your Bible. The devil is defeated by the blood of the Lamb and the word of our testimony. What is a testimony? (stating truth or fact; giving evidence as a witness [as in court]) Jesus already shed His blood as the Lamb of God. We need to tell people let them know that Jesus died to take away their sins. Let them know the devil will be defeated. Our testimony helps defeat him. Let s pray and thank Jesus for dying for our sins and ask Him to help us share this good news. Lead the kids in prayer response to lesson. 10 min. BIBLE SKILLS Use the Books of the Bible display board to point things out as you ask these questions: Is 1 st Peter in the Old or New Testament? 6 1 st Peter is an epistle. What is an epistle? (letter) What does the 1 st in 1 st Peter mean? (it s the first of two letters Peter wrote that are contained in our Bible) Hand out Bibles. Remind students to handle Bibles carefully and to help younger students find verses. Find 1 Peter 1:19 and then look at the verse to answer my questions. (Have a student read this verse out loud.) Jesus blood is precious. What does precious mean? (valued, prized) Jesus Christ is like a lamb without what? (blemish or spot) What does blemish mean? (blame, shame, stain, disgrace [from A Critical Lexicon and Concordance to the English and Greek New Testament]) What does spot mean? (stain, mark) Jesus was the perfect, sinless sacrifice. Choose a couple of students to carefully collect the Bibles. 15 min. ACTIVITY/SNACK Supplies: Large and small marshmallows Small pretzel sticks Orange/brown iced cookie or cupcake with a lion face drawn on with icing Fruit Plates Napkins/paper towels Give each student large and small marshmallows and mini pretzel sticks and show them how to make a lamb with these. Remind them that Jesus is the Lamb of God. Give each student an iced cookie or cupcake and have them stick some of the pretzels into the frosting to make a mane for the lion. Remind them that Jesus is the Lion of the Tribe of Judah. Give each student a piece of fruit and remind them that Jesus is the Last Adam. Lesson 12 Jesus is ~L, Part 1~ Annette R.
