2 MISSION & OBJECTIVES Mission EDCTP aims to support collaborative research that accelerates the clinical development of new or improved interventions to prevent or treat HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria and, since 2014, neglected infectious diseases in sub- Saharan Africa Background Established in 2003 by a co-decision of the European Parliament and Council: Article 185 Initiative (Ex 169) Pool research, activities to achieve greater impact against PRDs Promote integrated approach to health research in Europe In response to MDGs and global health crises caused by PRDs No economic incentive for private investments in PRDs Public investments sparse and know-how fragmented EDCTP1: EDCTP2:

7 EXAMPLE HIV PROJECT IN CAMEROON 2LADY trial coordinated by Prof. Eric Delaporte (University of Montpellier, France) 6 institutions in 4 European countries: Prince Leopold Institute of Tropical Medicine, Belgium; Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, Germany; Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), Switzerland; University Hospital Saint-Antoine, University of Montpellier 1 and National Agency for AIDS Research (ANRS), France 4 institutions in 4 sub-saharan African countries: University of Yaoundé, Cameroon; Mbeya Medical Research Programme, Tanzania; Université Cheikh Anta DIOP de Dakar (UCAD), Senegal; University of Limpopo, South Africa ANRS-EDCTP funded project - EDCTP grant value of 1,117,739 Conducted a multicentre phase III trial of 2nd line ARV treatment in adults in Cameroon, Senegal and Burkina Faso between Nov 2009 and Oct 2013 The trial confirmed the WHO recommendation of boosted protease inhibitors with NRTIs for 2nd line treatment Strengthened capacity for conducting GCP-compliant phase III clinical trials and established a network of S-S/N-S partnerships

9 CENTRAL AFRICAN NETWORK FOR TB, AIDS AND MALARIA (CANTAM) Coordinated by Prof. Francine Ntoumi (Congolese Foundation for Medical Research, Congo) Established in 2008 with 2.8 M awarded to 6 institutions across Congo, Cameroon (~ 800 k), Gabon and Germany 5 Cameroonian partners: University of Buea; Organization for the Coordination of Endemic Disease Control in Central (OCEAC); Institute of Research for the Development (IRD); University of Yaoundé; International Reference Centre Chantal Biya (CIRCB) Conducted epidemiological studies in Cameroon and Congo in HIV, malaria and tuberculosis (prevalence, genotyping of strains, prevalence of drug resistance, age distribution) Generated 20 publications and increased the capacity to conduct Phase I-III trials Supported 34 long-term trainees: 1 post-doc; 13 PhDs; 13 MScs; and 7 MDs 300 participants from across the network participated in 21 training workshops on ethics, GCLP, molecular biology and diagnostics techniques and data management
