Pharmacy has expanded its role within the health care delivery system from a profession focusing on preparation and dispensing of medications, to one in which the pharmacy team provides a range of patient-centered care and monitoring services. The Pharmacy Technician Program at NPCC will provide you with the skills necessary to work in a variety of Pharmacy settings. A pharmacy technician is responsible for assisting the pharmacist by performing tasks that do not require professional judgment and can be reviewed by a pharmacist to ensure accuracy. Some of the duties of the pharmacy technician include drug information management, medication preparation and dispensing, inventory management, and patient assessment. Pharmacy Technicians are vital to the pharmacy as they allow the pharmacist more time in expanding and adapting their practice to meet the needs of the patients. Pharmacy
4 P. 4 Fall Admission Application due last Wednesday of April Technicians are employed in a variety of pharmacy settings including retail, hospital, long-term care, mail order, and specialty pharmacies, as in a compounding or nuclear pharmacy. One very important word that you should understand now is ETHICS. Ethics is a mode of conduct and behavior. A pattern of proper conduct at all times is essential in persons desiring a career in any profession. The ethical responsibilities associated with a career in health care make it necessary for those practicing in this domain to carefully consider all of their actions both on and off duty. How long does it take to become a Pharmacy Technician? National Park Community College offers two degree plans to fit your career goals. The Technical Certificate degree plan is a 12-month program, beginning in the fall and continuing through the summer semester. The Associate Degree is a 24-month program, beginning in the fall of the student s first year and continuing through the summer semester of the second year. The state of Arkansas does not currently have a state law mandating a technician to become educated, but states across the country are quickly adopting a law of technician education and Arkansas will adopt the law in the coming years as well. Do I need certification and/or registration? National Park Community College s Pharmacy Technician Program will fully prepare students to take the Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam (PTCE) offered through the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB). Students generally take this test during the last semester of the program. The national PTCE is administered as a computerbased test at testing centers across the United States. Exam information can be found at Upon passing the national exam, the technician is granted national certification and bear the designation of CPhT. Certified Pharmacy Technicians maintain their certification by obtaining twenty (20) hours of Continuing Education every two years. National Certification is voluntary in some states, but is mandatory for employment in many. Several employers in Arkansas are only hiring certified pharmacy technicians and this trend is becoming more prevalent. National Certification demonstrates that the technician possesses a desired level of proficiency to become a valuable and effective employee within the pharmacy. All pharmacy technicians in Arkansas must register with the Arkansas State Board of Pharmacy. Information about the Arkansas State Board of Pharmacy is located at There are a variety of national, state, and local organizations that Pharmacy Technicians may become evolved. Benefits include newsletters, journals, and continuing education opportunities. Students are encouraged to become members of their state and national organizations. Will I get a job and how much will I earn? The career outlook for Pharmacy Technicians is above average for well educated and trained technicians. The pharmacy technician job outlook is expected to grow by 31% over the next decade. This positive job outlook for educated, trained technicians is due to the aging population, changing state laws, and the expanding role of pharmacy technicians. The earning potential for Pharmacy Technicians across the country has a wide range of hourly wages. The average salary range for a beginning pharmacy technician is from $19,000 to $41,000 depending on the state of practice, pharmacy setting, and job responsibilities of the position. Arkansas average annual salary for pharmacy technicians in 2013 was $25,000. The beginning hourly wages for pharmacy technicians in the Arkansas area range from $10.00 to $13.00.
