5 Chat APPS WhatsApp WhatsApp is an instant messaging app, which lets you send instant messages, images and videos to friends. Viber Viber lets you text, call, share photos and send video messages to people worldwide. Oovoo Oovoo is a video chat app. It lets you make video calls, voice calls and send text messages. You can webcam up to 12 people at once. Tango Tango is an app which allows you to make voice calls and video calls, and have group chats. BBM Blackberry's BBM is an instant messaging app. You have you own 4 digit PIN and other people can only add you using this number. Chat (2) Video Kik Kik is an instant messaging app which lets you share messages, photos, games and news, or organise events. WeChat WeChat is an app which lets you send and receive texts, voice messages and video calls. Wiper Wiper is a free messaging service. Texting you can erase from your friends phones, plus encrypted messages Skype Skype is a computer programme and app, which lets you make audio and video calls to friends and family. Omegle Talk to Strangers! Omegle randomly connects you to another person who's on the site, and lets you talk to them in a one-to-one video chat. Vine Vine is an app that lets you share 6 second videos that play on a loop. You can repos videos and leave comments. Hangouts Google Hangouts is a platform by Google which includes instant messaging, video chat and SMS features. Facebook Messenger Is an app which allows users to communicate with their friends from their Facebook account or phonebook. Chatroulette Chatroulette is a website which lets you talk to another person via a webcam another in the world. Musical.ly Lets you share music videos up to 15 second long. Upload your own songs. Lip sync to your favourite artist. Video (Live Streaming) Social Networks Twitch Twitch is a live video game website. You can watch playbacks of games being played by other people. You can also live stream your own games, and chat to other gamers. You Now Tap Go Live and you re on! Broadcast to a live audience, expand your social media following, comment on videos and buy virtual gifts Periscope Periscope is a live video streaming app. Allows you to send direct live video feeds to your Twitter followers Meerkat Meerkat is a livestreaming app where streams are pushed to followers in real time via push notifications. Everything is live. Offers a leader-board Facebook Facebook is the biggest social network, which les users create a page about themselves. Tumblr Tumblr is a social networking site and blogging site that lets you share text, photos, quotes, audio clips and videos. Skout Skout is a simple social networking site an app, which you can use to connect with people worldwide. Twitter Twitter is a social network messaging service that lets you send public message called 'tweets'. 5

6 Snapchat Snapchat is an app that lets you send a photo or short video to your friends. The snap appears on screen for a matter of seconds before disappearing. Social Networks (Pictures) PopJam PopJam is a creative website for children and young people. You can share drawings, photos and audio messages with friends and other people. Flickr Flickr is an online photo sharing site. You can share your own pictures and follow other people. Instagram Instagram is a picture and video sharing app. Users can post content and use hashtags to share experiences, thoughts or memories with an online community. Tinder Tinder is a dating app, which has two separate communities one for adults (18+) and one for young people aged You re shown other people s profile pictures and you swipe left for no or right for yes. Online Dating MeetMe MeetMe is a social network and dating site which allows users to meet and communicate with other people worldwide. Snog Snog is a teen dating site that lets you rate other people s profiles as snog, marry or avoid. You can also send private messages. MyLOL MyLOL is a dating site for teenagers aged 13-20, but some users are up to 25 years old. Like an adult dating site, you can view other people s profiles and search for others based on their age, gender and location. Secret Folders Calculator% Calculator% hides private photos and videos behind a calculator. Anyone who starts this application looks as a calculator but if you put in passcode it will open up private area. Private Photo Vault Private Photo Vault locks your photos and videos behind a pin. Keeps your photos etc. hidden from others. Secret Folder App Secret Folder App helps you to protect your photos and videos in a secure place with a very discreet lock type. No one can enter except those who know the passcode. Secret Piano Secret Piano hides photos, videos, passwords, notes, audios, locations and secret messages behind a real piano. The app will capture photo and video of intruders if they attempt to access it. GROOMING Online sexual abuse is commonly conducted via webcams, instant messenger applications (such as Skype) and social networking sites Terre des Hommes (children s charity) carried out a sting, posing on video chat rooms as "Sweetie", a 10-year-old Filipina girl. Some 20,000 men contacted her, with 1,000 found to have offered her money. The names of these men - including 110 Britons - were passed to police. 6

9 What should I do if my child is being bullied online? 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year No safe place, hard to escape Bully can be anonymous Doesn t empathise with victim Easily shared with an audience and has the ability to go viral in seconds 2014 Report information to your child's school. Be aware of what you share S-Start T-Telling O-Other P-People Block the Bully Speak up Try not to respond Save the evidence Report Tell the HeadTeacher Under new laws, the head teacher of a school now has the power to enable them to police cyberbullying carried out by pupils even at home Tell CEOP If you think it is worthy of a CEOP report, then the police will listen to your problems and investigate accordingly Call ChildLine. Allows you to read reviews/responses from young people Each platform is rated You can give your own opinion and share information with others It will allow you to see if inappropriate content is shared 11

12 Block websites stop your kids from seeing inappropriate content Set time limits manage how long your children spend online Get instant alerts get or text alerts when your kids try to view blocked sites or post confidential information Social networking tools control the use of social networks like Facebook and Twitter and set up text alerts if personal information is posted YouTube filtering a unique technology to prevent exposure to unsuitable content Usage reports review your children's online activity from anywhere in the world As well as parental controls. Advanced spam filtering with image blocking to protect children from offensive content BT Cleanfeed blocks sites classified as illegal by the Internet Watch Foundation Access to our internet abuse prevention team for children or parents to report any concerns These will allow you to prevent children from accessing certain sites but they are not a completely full-proof system Parental controls for tablets / smartphones are available too as always, try them and see which works best for you and your family 12

13 Simple checklist for parents: I have visited with my child (I have bookmarked the CEOP website and told my child what is there) Open and honest dialogue show an interest and learn about what your child does online Set specific boundaries and rules for your child and change them according to their age!
