1 Contributors Cheng Xiaohe, PhD is an associate professor at the School of International Studies at Renmin University in Beijing. His research focuses on China s foreign relations, including the US-China relationship, China s relations with the Korean peninsula, and China s relations with the Indian subcontinent. Before joining Renmin University, Dr. Cheng worked for the China Institute of Contemporary International Relations (CICIR). He has been a research fellow at the Fairbank Center at Harvard University and has taught at Dublin College University and the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. Dr. Cheng did his undergraduate studies in international politics in Fudan University and earned his doctorate in political science from Boston University. Carla P. Freeman, PhD is an associate research professor in the China Studies program at Johns Hopkins University s School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS), where she also directs its Foreign Policy Institute. In recent years, she has been a visiting scholar at Harvard s Fairbank Center for Chinese Studies and the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences Institute of American Studies. She has published widely on China s international and domestic politics, including on China and North Korea. She is a graduate of Yale University, Johns Hopkins University, and Sciences Po in Paris. Gu Guoliang is director of the Center for Arms Control and Nonproliferation Studies at the Institute of American Studies of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. He began his career in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1969 and worked in the Chinese Embassy in the United Kingdom from and During his diplomatic career, he served as Counselor of the Chinese Delegation to the UN Conference on Disarmament in Geneva. Mr. Gu has been a visiting scholar at the Stimson Center, the Monterey Institute of International Studies, and Hong Kong University. He received his BA in English from Shanghai International Studies University and his MA from the School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) at Johns Hopkins University. Jin Jingyi, PhD is professor of International Politics in the Department of Korean Studies and deputy director of the Korean Peninsula Research Center at Peking University. He has been a visiting professor at Keio University, Kyungnam University, and the Academy of Korean Studies. Dr. Jin s research focuses on the contemporary history of international relations and the Korean peninsula, Korean history, North-South relations on the Korean peninsula, and contemporary Korean politics. Dr. Jin graduated from Yanbian University and received his PhD in international relations from Peking University.
2 250 Contributors Jin Zhe, PhD is the chairman of the Institute of World Economy and secretarygeneral of the Korea Peninsula Research Center at the Liaoning Academy of Social Sciences. His previous positions include senior researcher, vice chairman, and chairman at the Liaoning Academy of Social Sciences. He was also a jointresearcher at the Economic Research Institute for Northeast Asia. His primary areas of focus are the North Korean economy, and cooperation between China and North Korea. His previous works include A Guide to Investment in North Korea and A Study on Economic Cooperation between Liaoning Province and North Korea. Dr. Jin has studied at the Liaoning Academy of Social Sciences and Liaoning Normal University. He is a graduate of Yanbian University with a PhD in Korean language and literature. Li Nan, PhD is an associate research fellow at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences Institute of American Studies. His research interests include US-North Korea relations, US-China relations, and China-North Korea relations. He was a visiting fellow at the Center for Northeast Asian Policy Studies at Brookings from 2012 to Dr. Li received his BA, MA, and PhD from Renmin University in Beijing. Li Yongchun, PhD is a research fellow at the Institute of Asia-Pacific Studies of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. His research focuses on the international politics of Northeast Asia. Dr. Li has been a visiting scholar at Kyoto University and Korea University. He speaks Japanese and Korean. His most recent publications include a study comparing feudal regime reform in Japan and North Korea and a study examining the DPRK, the US, and Sino-ROK Relations. Dr. Li received his MA and PhD in history from Peking University. Lin Jinsu, PhD is a professor at Zhejiang Yuexiu University of Foreign Languages in Hangzhou. She was formerly affiliated with the Institute of DRPK Studies at Yanbian University and was also a professor in the Department of Economics and Management in there. She received a degree in economics from Northeast Normal University. Ma Yuanpeng is a PhD candidate in Asia Pacific Studies at the Graduate School in the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, writing on the relationship between South Korea and North Korea. Nathan Beauchamp-Mustafaga is editor of the China Brief at The Jamestown Foundation in Washington, DC. He is a graduate of the dual-degree in international affairs MA program of the London School of Economics and Peking University, where he focused on Chinese foreign policy and wrote both of his master s theses on China-North Korea relations. He holds a BA in international affairs and Chinese language and literature from George Washington University s Elliott School of International Affairs and has been affiliated with the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS), the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), and the Center for International and Strategic Studies at Peking University (CISS).
3 Contributors 251 Piao Jianyi, PhD is senior fellow and director of the National Institute of International Strategy (NIIS) and director of the North-East Asia Research Center and the contemporary Mongolian Research Center of the Institute in the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS), as well as a professor and doctoral supervisor of the graduate school at CASS. He is also distinguished professor and research fellow at Peking University, Minzu University, Shandong University, Yanbian University, Kyungnam University (Korea) and Dongseo University (Korea). Dr. Piao s research focuses on the Korean peninsula and Northeast Asian issues. He received his BA from Yanbian University and his MA and PhD from Moscow State University. He has published extensively on the Six-party talks and China s policies toward the Republic of Korea, among other topics. Quan Hexiu, PhD is a professor in the Department of History at Liaoning University, where he serves as director of the Research Center for the History of International Relations in East Asia. He has been a researcher at the Academy of Korean Studies and has also served as a visiting professor of Korean history at Korea University. Dr. Quan has published four books and coauthored 15 books. He has conducted academic exchanges in countries including South Korea, Japan, the United Kingdom, India, Russia, Mongolia, and Vietnam. Dr. Quan received his BA and MA in history from Northeast Normal University and his PhD in literature from the Academy of Korean Studies. Shen Zhihua, PhD is a professor of history and director of the Center for Cold War International History Studies at East China Normal University in Shanghai, China. He is the author of more than 10 books and 80 articles on the Korean War and Sino-Soviet relations. His most recent books in English are Mao, Stalin and the Korean War: Trilateral Communist Relations in the 1950s (Routledge, 2012) and After Leaning to One Side: China and Its Allies in the Cold War (Woodrow Wilson Center Press with Stanford University Press, 2011) co-authored with Li Danhui. Shi Yinhong, PhD is professor of International Relations, chairman of the Academic Committee of the School of International Studies, and director of the Center on American Studies at Renmin University of China in Beijing. He has served as a counselor to the State Council of China since February He previously was professor of International History at Nanjing University from 1993 to 1998, and a professor of International Relations and Director of the Center for International Strategic Studies at the International Relations Academy, Nanjing from 1998 to He also served as the president of the American Historical Research Association of China from 1996 to Dr. Shi obtained his PhD in International History from Nanjing University in 1988 and an MA degree in the history of US foreign relations at the same institution in In addition to hundreds of essays and articles, he has published 15 books on topics ranging from Sima Qian to current global challenges and China, China s external strategy, and contemporary international strategy. Yafeng Xia, PhD is a professor of history at Long Island University in New York and a guest professor at the Center for Cold War International History Studies,

He is the author of many publications, including the book Negotiating with the Enemy: US-China Talks during the Cold War, (Indiana University Press, 2006). Yang Xiyu is senior fellow at the China Institute of International Studies(CIIS) and executive vice president of the Institute of Boao Forum for Asia. As the founding director of the Office on Korean Peninsula Issues in the Chinese Foreign Ministry, he was heavily involved in the Six-party talks, drafting the 9.19 Joint Statement on denuclearization of the peninsula. Mr. Yang also took part in the Four-party talks from 1996 through 1998 as a representative of China at the Working Level Meeting of the Four-party talks in New York, and served as assistant to the head of Chinese delegation at the Four-party talks in Geneva. He worked in the Chinese Embassy in the United Sates and served in China s Permanent Mission to the United Nations as Councilor from 1994 through 1998, and 2002 to 2003 respectively. His principal areas of research are Korean Peninsula affairs, US diplomacy, and security issues in the Asia-Pacific. He is designated a National Distinguished Expert of the State Council of China. Yu Shaohua is director of the Department of Asia-Pacific Security and Cooperation in the China Institute for International Studies. Ms. Yu served for a number of terms in the Chinese Embassy to the Democratic People s Republic of Korea (DPRK) and also worked at the Central Compilation and Translation Bureau as a Korean translator. Her principal fields of research include North Korea, Korean domestic politics and foreign relations, and security on the Korean peninsula. She is a graduate of Yanbian University. Zhu Feng, PhD is a professor in the School of International Studies at Peking University and the executive director of the Collaborative Innovation Center for South China Sea Studies at Nanjing University. He is also a senior research fellow of the Center for Peace and Development of China and consults independently for the Chinese government and the private sector. Dr. Zhu writes extensively on regional security in East Asia, the nuclear issue in North Korea, American national security strategy, China-US relations, and missile defense. His recent books include International Relations Theory and East Asian Security (Beijing: People s University Press, 2007), China s Ascent: Power, Security, and Future of International politics (co-edited with Robert S. Ross, Cornell University Press, 2008), and America, China, and the Struggle for World Order: Ideas, Traditions, Historical Legacies, and Global Visions, with John Ikenberry and Wang Jisi (Palgrave MacMillan, 2015). Dr. Zhu completed both his undergraduate studies and his PhD at Peking University.
