INTRODUCTION TO TECHNOLOGY: Using the Internet The Internet has become a valuable resource for worldwide information sharing. Often stories surface of how people have been taken advantage of, either tricked into revealing information or otherwise been the victim of online fraud. In other cases, users of the Internet have had their computers compromised by viruses, which can be annoying at the least, and very costly at the worst. With all those pitfalls out there, who still wants to use the Internet? With a little education, the Internet can be a safe place for all. The Web Browser: Also known as just the browser, this is often the first point of contact for the Internet. Examples of browsers commonly used are Internet Explorer, Firefox, and Safari, though many others exist. Browsers are free programs that can be used to access web pages by typing in addresses, or clicking on special areas of pages already being viewed (hyperlinks, or links). Current browsers have a lot of security built in to protect the user, but they aren't foolproof. Security on the web: Often websites ask for personal information, like name, address, address, and in some cases even things like credit card information and Social Security numbers. How can it be assured that the information shared this way won't fall into the hands of malicious people? Careful inspection of the website by the browser clues users into a website's security level. Regular websites usually have an address, e.g. The above website offers no special security. Any information we submit to this website can be seen by anyone on the Internet who tries, and it's very simple to do using a technique called packet sniffing.
Websites may be secured with certificates which are special files that verify the connection between the browser and web site is encrypted (coded in such a way that only the browser and web site can understand the information passed). Certificates also serve as a kind of digital driver's license, as they are only issued by a handful of companies that do diligent work to ensure a company really is who they say they are. Many modern browsers denote this by providing a blue or green bar, and the website address changes to for example The certificate and security can always be assured by finding and clicking on the little lock icon on the screen. Notice above the circled lock icon, as well as the differently colored bar indicating this site is secure. Many of the modern browsers are smart enough to display messages, or differently colored bars, when the certificate does not match the website being visited, to avoid a malicious person pretending to be someone else.
Notice the message displayed regarding an invalid site certificate. Notice above the website being visited has a red bar, indicating a problem with the certificate. Viruses: A virus is a computer program designed to interfere with the normal operation of a computer. Viruses can do a variety of things, from simply being a nuisance to stealing information to eventually destroying the contents of a machine. To prevent viruses from infecting a machine or spreading to other machines, programs called Virus Scanners can be purchased and installed. This is a MUST for any computer connected to the Internet, as new viruses are created and released into the world every day. Who creates viruses? Sometimes, it's a person or group looking to benefit somehow, perhaps by stealing information or gaining access to a machine. Other times, it's a person or group looking to send a political message. And other times, it's just simply someone looking for 'bragging rights' to say they released a successful virus and can cause problems. Malware: Malware often are a lighter form of virus. They are programs the user installs on their machine either knowingly or not. Most of the time, these programs track activity, such as website visits, and transmit that information back to someone else. The more dangerous forms of malware can steal usernames and passwords to websites, or personal information entered into websites like credit card information. A good virus scan program, as mentioned above, is the best line of defense against malware. Ways to avoid malware: do not click on websites unless the identity of the website is absolutely known. Do not install software from the web that isn't verified very carefully. Do not open links from s without first ensuring the link is safe to click on. When in doubt, DON'T! Who creates malware? Most of the time, malware is created by people looking for financial gain they farm information and sell or trade it. For example, a malware creator might farm credit card numbers, and either use them to purchase items online, or sell them to others for the same purpose. Phishing: Sometimes, s are sent that contain links to what appear to be legitimate sites. They
ask the user to click on the links to perform an action, such as updating an account. The links should be inspected carefully, because they do not really lead to the site as indicated. For example, a link might be received that asks the user to log into their ebay account and change their password, and the link says but when the user clicks, it goes to so it still sort of looks legitimate. The best way to protect against this is to mouse over the links and carefully inspect, at the bottom of the screen, where the link will REALLY go if it is clicked on. Also remember, almost all legitimate businesses will never send an asking for your personal information or asking you to log in and update your personal information, but if they do, visit the site directly by selecting the bookmark or typing the address in, instead of clicking on a link in an . The above screenshot contains an appearing to be from JetBlue, but also highlights the REAL address of a link in the , which is clearly not the JetBlue website.
The above appears to be from UPS, but is not. UPS never sends documents with tracking notifications, and careful inspection of the subject reveals notification is spelled incorrectly. This is dangerous, because it looks completely legitimate, but this is likely a virus. It s important to inspect e- mails carefully and be familiar with the practices of legitimate businesses and sites.
