4 Definition of Honors ELA Honors English Language Arts courses at the middle school provide an enriched curriculum for adolescents. Curriculum and instruction in these courses engages students in learning opportunities at greater depth and breadth of the academic standards. Defined in the SUSD Middle School Planning Guide

5 Creation of Honors ELA Curriculum Maps Part One: April 29 and May 2, 2014 SUSD grades 6-9 ELA teachers worked collaboratively to create Honors Curriculum Maps Teacher from each middle school Teacher from each grade One Freshman English Honors teacher working with each grade level Part Two: May 27 and 28, 2014 All grades 6-8 ELA teachers are invited to work with the teachers who participated in Part One to review and complete the curriculum maps Part Three: ELA training will include the Honors curriculum maps and the expectations of the course

6 Teachers Creating Curriculum Maps 6 th grade 7 th grade 8 th grade What is Honors? What do students need to know and be able to do to succeed in HS Honors courses? 7 th grade

7 Focus of Middle School Honors ELA Additional novel studies within each unit that require critical thinking. Additional writing assignments to enrich novel studies, research projects and nonfiction genres. Activities that focus on repetitive practice will be replaced with assignments that require higher order thinking. Focus on 4-5 key reading and writing strategies at each grade level. Emphasis on Advanced Placement (AP) strategies that will be expected to be used in a variety of learning situations.

8 Criteria for Course Placement Multiple criteria have been utilized to recommend placement into Grades 6-8 Honors English Language Arts which include: AIMS results District achievement benchmark data for reading and writing Teacher assessment of student work habits These indicators produced an aggregate score to aid in recommending the most appropriate English Language Arts placement for middle school students.

9 Criteria for Course Placement Students identified as gifted are recommended for placement into Honors. Based on gifted identification and the matrix process 24.4% of 5-7 grade students in SUSD were recommended for Honors * does not include incoming 6-8 grade students in Self Contained Gifted programs Students who do not qualify have an opt in option Students who qualify have an opt out option

11 Communication Plan May 1 Directions on how to access placement information posted on websites and hard copy directions sent home with students. Families log on to Sign In to access Parent Data Central where they find placement and commitment forms May 2 robocall and to current 5-7 th grade families directing them to website for directions MAY 9 blast to families who have not yet logged on MAY 12 robocall to those who have not yet logged on MAY 13 robocall reminding families that commitment forms are due May 15

13 Cocopah Middle School and Copper Ridge K-8 Based on community interest and parental support Cocopah and Copper Ridge have chosen to expand their honors course offerings to include science and social studies in grades 6-8. Each school is communicating their Honors Program to their staff, students and community.

14 Investment in Middle School Honors ELA $1925* purchased substitutes for 11 teachers to develop curriculum maps for 2 days $3300* compensate 11 teachers to facilitate, review and complete curriculum maps * funded from Indian Gaming Instructional Improvement Fund NO additional staffing for Honors ELA courses Parent organizations at Cocopah and Copper Ridge allocating professional development funds to support teacher education

15 Indicators of Honors ELA success Implementation of the Honors ELA Curriculum Maps as monitored by classroom visits, teacher and parent feedback Increase in student learning as measured by teacher created assessments, District and state assessments Student reading and writing achievement exceeds state and peer district averages. Increase in high school readiness for honors level coursework as measured by registration in honors courses and student learning Increase in parent satisfaction as measured by SUSD parent survey

17 Middle School Math February Identify student learning needs by site April 2014 July 2014 August 2014 June/July MS Math Teacher Focus Groups to gather teacher feedback (April 2 nd and 9 th ) - MS Survey sent to all MS math teachers to ideas and possible solutions - Principals continue to study solutions - $210,000 investment allocated to sites based on their needs and plans - 8 th to 9 th grade bridging program - Implementation of math for success classes or lower class size to close achievement gaps - 5 th to 6 th grade and 8 th to 9 th grade bridging program

18 Proposed Language Students Held Accountable for Their Middle School Performance

19 Middle School Math for Success Course Identified students are provided targeted intervention during the school year. Students participate in intervention strategies until demonstrating proficiency in identified standard(s). Students determined not to have successfully demonstrated mastery for the course are recommended to participate in transitional or bridging intervention or may be subject to retention. 6 th Grade 7 th Grade 8 th Grade 9 th Grade Targeted Interventions

20 Middle School to High School Summer Bridge Identified 8 th grade students receive targeted intervention provided during the summer session. Instruction occurs on the campus the students will be attending as 9 th graders. High school principals have hired teachers who will work with their incoming students.

21 High School Support Courses Each high school analyzed the student learning needs on their campus. Each high school has been allocated a 0.2 FTE funded from Indian Gaming Instructional Improvement to close the learning gaps they have identified. Based upon identified student learning needs, principals have allocated the additional staffing to provide math support.

22 Indicators of Middle School and High School Math Success All students master Algebra I standards by the end of the 9 th grade. Increase in math readiness for the next level course. Increase in math credits earned toward graduation. Increase in student learning as measured by teacher created assessments, District assessments, and state assessments. Exceed in student math achievement relative to state and peer district averages.
