It provides statistical information on Ontario Mines, volume and value of Ontario production, costs and resources used by the Ontario Mining Industry, Mining Claims, prospectors' licences, and work recorded in Ontario. Larger than France and Germany combined, Northern Ontario is a vast land of minerals, forests and freshwater lakes spanned by a high-speed advanced telecommunications network. The Sudbury Basin contains one of the world's largest deposits of nickel and copper. Ontario's gold mines, most of which are located in Hemlo, Timmins and Red Lake, produce about $1 billion worth of gold annually. Timmins is also the site of the Kidd Creek copper-zinc-silver deposit, one of the largest and richest volcanogenic massive sulphide deposits in the world. The Lac des Iles mine north of Thunder Bay is the only platinum-palladium mine in Canada. The far north region of Ontario has great geological potential but remains largely unexplored and undeveloped. Programs such as the Far North Geological Mapping Initiative are providing new geoscience data that will attract more exploration and development. Thunder Bay Mining Page 1 of 7

2 Ontario s geology: a snapshot Ontario covers more than 400,000 square miles. Sixty per cent of its bedrock is Precambrian Shield, the source of most of our metals, some industrial minerals and building stone. Major geological provinces and belts include the Archean Superior Province, the Grenville Province and the Southern Province; important elements of the Proterozoic Grenville, Penokean, and Trans-Hudson orogens; and the Mid-Continent Rift. Alkaline and kimberlitic igneous activity occurred during the Mid- Proterozoic and Phanerozoic eras. Our Precambrian rocks host gold and base metal deposits that rank with the best in the world. 5 EXPLORATION ACTIVITY: Mineral exploration within the Thunder Bay South District continues to be strong with many companies focusing on the search for gold, uranium, copper-nickel-pgm, as well as VMS copper-zinc deposits. Several new exploration companies and a consulting firm have established offices in the City of Thunder Bay: Magma Metals Ltd., under the direction of Exploration Manager, Allan MacTavish, M.Sc., P.Geo; Zinifex Canadian Enterprises Inc. acquired 95% of Wolfden Resources Ltd.; and a new consulting firm, managed by Neil Pettigrew has been established.
