4 Accounting GCE AS/A Level GCE Accounting is well suited to those students who would like to gain an academic qualification relating to the wld of business and finance. It will particularly interest those who wish to pursue a career in Accountancy, Banking Finance. KEY FEATURES OF THE COURSE The course offers students the opptunity to study both financial accounting and management accounting. AS modules include an Introduction to Financial Accounting and an introduction to Financial & Management Accounting. A2 modules include Further Aspects of Financial Accounting and Further Aspects of Management Accounting. We have links with a local Accountancy Practice who will provide some teaching. Students taking this course should: develop knowledge and understanding of the purposes of accounting, its concepts, techniques and procedures apply this knowledge and understanding to a variety of accounting problems. apply this knowledge and understanding to a variety of accounting problems develop an appreciation of the role and limitations of accounting in decision-making be able to analyse, interpret and evaluate accounting infmation, assess alternative courses of action and make reasoned judgements taking into consideration economic, legal, technological and social facts. The course also encourages students to acquire a range of imptant and transferable skills including data skills, problem solving, planning and evaluation skills. WHAT COULD THIS COURSE LEAD ON TO? The course is designed to provide a progression route to higher education and further training f employment. It is a particularly useful subject f careers in accountancy, politics, banking, financial services, business management, and the civil service. Accounting degrees are very popular and many students choose joint degrees in subjects such as Maths & Accounting Business & Finance. The professional bodies who are in charge of Accounting qualifications in the UK are extremely well established and offer a variety of qualifications. Those who study f a degree can pursue a Chartered Accountancy training contract with a business. Those students who wish to go into employment after A levels can pursue Accounting Technician qualifications with progression to Management Accountant. All of these qualifications are on the job qualifications. What kind of student is this course suitable f? GCE Accounting is a challenging option but an extremely rewarding one. You have to be fully committed and willing to wk extremely hard. It is an excellent partner f many other GCE subjects including Mathematics, Economics, and the Sciences. Some of the best Accountants are Chemistry graduates! Entry requirements Students will be expected to have achieved at least 4 grades at GCSE including B grades in Mathematics and English Language. 5 Government & Politics GCE AS/A Level Government and Politics encourages students to develop their interest, understanding and participation in Politics. A-level Government and Politics enables students to develop their critical thinking skills and enhance their ability to interpret, evaluate and comment on the nature of politics. Students will widen their own views government, politics and participation, as well as understanding those of others through debating, essay writing and critically analysing political processes. Key Features of the course The specification is broken down into four units. Units 1 and 2 are covered at AS and units 3 and 4 are covered at A2. At AS students will concentrate on people, politics and participation as well as governing modern Britain. At A2 students will learn about the popular options: US politics and US government and ideologies. Other options have also been introduced, including political issues and ideologies in action. All units are assessed through timed examinations What kind of student is this course suitable f? This course is particularly suitable f students who have studied English, Histy, Psychology and Religious Education. Studying Government and Politics is also suitable f those students who may wish to consider getting involved in Politics in all its fms; mainstream parties, pressure groups, student politics single issue campaigns. A-level Government and Politics is a good choice f students considering a career in the professions, those who simply want to understand how the wld wks. Politics goes well with Economics, Histy, Sociology and English. Politics does not just appeal to Social Science students, however: increasingly at a national level Art and Drama students have enrolled to study Government and Politics, giving them a broader perspective on the wld. What could this course lead on to? Many students who have taken the A- level in Government and Politics go on to study Politics at university. From there you might become a researcher, pursue a career in Journalism, in the Media. Students also go on to become teachers wk in the legal profession who have studied Government and Politics. Entry Requirements Students must have achieved at least a grade B in English Language and at least one grade B in the Humanities.

6 Photography A Level KEY FEATURES OF THE COURSE Photography has come a long way since box brownies and early film based photography, the current development of digital technology has allowed me people to access this fantastic way of capturing life. The course will develop students critical analysis of histical and current photographic practice; this in turn will be used to produce a body of wk that is influenced by professional photographers and image makers. The students will be expected to produce practical and contextual/critical wk in one me of the following areas: Ptraiture Landscape photography Still life Documentary Photo-Journalism Experimental imagery Students will be given the opptunity to wk alongside professional photographers, visit exhibitions and wk within a professional environment responding to briefs set by companies in the local area. WHAT KIND OF STUDENTS IS THIS COURSE SUITABLE FOR? This course is designed f creative minded students who want to develop their understanding of photographic practice and histical studies. The course will ask students to demonstrate their understanding of shape, line, fm and all aspects of visual language. You will be able to wk independently and be passionate about photography and image making. WHAT COURSE COULD THIS LEAD ONTO? This course can lead onto foundation degrees and higher education within the media and creative sect. ENTRY REQUIREMENTS As this course requires a body of research and critical analysis alongside investigations into existing wk, the minimum entry requirement is a grade C in GCSE English. 7 Level 3 BTEC in Applied General Science Scientists wk in industry, the health service, government establishments and educational institutions. Fields of wk include research and development and scientific analysis, and there are job opptunities in almost every industry, from food and drink to pharmaceuticals. The BTEC Level 3 National Awards, Certificates and Diplomas in Applied Science offer the opptunity to specialise in areas ranging from fensics to medicine. BTEC Nationals are qualifications that are designed to provide specialist wk-related qualifications in a range of sects. They give learners the knowledge, understanding and skills that they need to prepare them f employment. WHAT KIND OF STUDENT IS THIS COURSE SUITABLE FOR? The BTEC National Award offers a specialist qualification that focuses on particular aspects of employment within the vocational sect. The BTEC National Award is a qualification which can extend a learner s programme of study and provide vocational emphasis f learners following an Applied GCE GCE route a combination of both in their main programme of study and is equivalent to one GCE. The BTEC National Award is especially suitable f learners who wish to follow a programme of study directly related to their wk experience to an area of employment that they wish to move into. This qualification offers an approach which is different to other Level 3 qualifications in science and will appeal to learners who prefer ptfolio-based assessment covering a variety of scientific investigations. WHAT COULD THIS COURSE LEAD ON TO? On successful completion of a BTEC National qualification, learners can progress into within employment and/ continue their study in the same vocational area. The BTEC Nationals in Applied Science have been developed in the areas of labaty and industrial science, fensic science, medical science, environmental science and biological, chemical and physical science to provide a route to employment in the science industry within ganisations that use science. These can include roles such as: Nursing and midwifery wking as a quality control technician/analyst, where the employee wks in a production plant labaty carrying out analytical tests using modern instrumentation, ICT and data interpretation. wking in a hospital as a medical physics technician suppting the use of X-ray and other imaging/scanning instruments. wking in a research labaty in the development of new drugs. Managing projects that include setting up apparatus, measuring and handling chemical substances, following procedures, carrying out observations and measurements, separating and analysing products. wking in the chemical industry, involved with testing materials. wking with the fensic science service using their analytical skills in the chemistry industry. wking in chemical companies developing fertilisers and other plant feeds. wking f a scientific magazine journal. Editing and proofreading articles on issues such as applications and implications of new science discoveries and developments. ENTRY REQUIREMENTS In der to ensure that students have the necessary depth of understanding and essential knowledge and skills to be successful in the Level 3 BTEC in Applied General Science, the entry requirements are a minimum of 2 C grades achieved in 2 of the following GCSE sciences; Ce Science Additional Science Further Additional Science Separate sciences (Biology, Chemistry Physics) Alternatively, a minimum of a merit in BOTH Principles of Applied Science and Applications of Science Level 2 BTECs. Students must also have a C in BOTH English and Maths be wking towards this.

8 The Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) The EPQ allows each student to embark on a largely self-directed and self-motivated project. Students must choose a topic, plan, research and develop their idea and decide on their finished product. They will however, be suppted by teachers with the option of weekly suppt lessons. Universities suppt and value the EPQ as evidence of a student s ability to use a range of skills that are vital f successful study in higher education. The EPQ: Gives students the opptunity to choose their own topic Makes students responsible f their own learning and development Inspires and motivates students completing the project gives them greater confidence and a sense of achievement. Teaches new skills, such as, independent research, project management, reflection and self-directed learning Awards 70 UCAS points f an A* The EPQ encourages creativity and curiosity. A project topic may be directly related to a student s main study programme, but should look beyond the specification. During the EPQ, students will learn to: MANAGE identify, design, plan, and complete a project ( task within a group project), applying ganisational skills and strategies to meet their stated objectives. USE RESOURCES/RESEARCH obtain and select infmation from a range of sources, analyse data, apply it relevantly, and demonstrate understanding of any appropriate connections and complexities of their topic. DEVELOP AND REALISE use a range of skills, including using new technologies, to solve problems, to take decisions critically, creatively and flexibly, and to achieve their aims. REVIEW evaluate the outcome, including their learning and perfmance. We will expect a lot of our students to do the EPQ as part of their studies, especially if it will help develop skills and lead to better qualifications. It will not though, be compulsy f all students.
