1 CURRICULUM DIMENSIONS: Centenary College Education Department North Warren Regional High School English Grade 9 Level II Laura Tykowski Content: Romeo and Juliet and West Side Story Compare/Contrast Essay Product: Romeo and Juliet and West Side Story Compare/Contrast Essay Objectives: Identify and analyze a universal theme common to both Romeo and Juliet and West Side Story Analyze plot and characterization within both stories Compose a 3 (or more) page essay using MLA format Process: 1. Motivation: Play clips from both Romeo and Juliet and West Side Story showing parallel scenes 2. Instructional Activities: Day 1 Explain/ discuss the essay assignment sheet packet o Read the thesis statement provided for the students o Brainstorm some possible themes from both books and create a list on the board o Briefly explain the structure of the essay and the content needed in each paragraph and answer specific student questions about the assignment o Explain the parallel story organizer Students will work in groups to fill in the parallel character, plot and conflict information from West Side Story o Each student will select three pairs of parallel characters and three pairs of parallel events that they will focus on in their essay Day 2 Students will work independently in class on the outlines for their essays o While students are working I will meet individually with each one to discuss the theme, characters and events they have chosen and answer any questions they have regarding the assignment o Students will be responsible for collecting specific examples and quotations from both books and including them in the outline I will briefly meet with each student to discuss their outline during the class work session Day 3 Students will work with a partner to peer edit the first drafts of their papers

2 o Students will swap papers with their partners and read and edit the essays using the editing marks provided o Students will also check essays for transitions, MLA format and several other items listed on the peer editing checklist 3. Assessment: I will check each student s organizer for theme, three character pairs and three event pairs using a checklist on day 1 Outlines will be collected and checked for the elements asked for in the assignment sheet and on the essay rubric Students will assess each other during the peer editing workshop Essays will be graded using the essay rubric 4. Feedback for Students: Students will receive feedback from the teacher during the individual meetings that will occur during the in class work sessions Students will also receive feedback from their peers through discussion and use of the peer editing sheets during the peer editing workshop 5. Closure: Students will have an opportunity to share their completed essays or to discuss the content of their essays in a mini seminar RESEARCH: Romeo and Juliet and West Side Story Essay Packet Romeo and Juliet Themes New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards: E.2 (Reading) Use a variety of graphic organizers with various text types for memory retention and monitoring comprehension G.14 (Reading) Identify and analyze recurring themes across literary works and the ways in which these themes and ideas are developed A.3 (Writing) Use strategies such as graphic organizers and outlines to plan and write drafts according to the intended message, audience, and purpose for writing A.6 (Writing) Review and edit work for spelling, usage, clarity, and fluency A.7 (Writing) Use the computer and word processing software to compose, revise, edit, and publish a piece A.8 (Writing) Use a scoring rubric to evaluate and improve own writing and the writing of others D.3 (Speaking) Demonstrate effective delivery strategies (e.g., eye contact, body language, volume, intonation, and articulation) when speaking B.5 (Listening) Follow oral directions to perform specific tasks to answer questions or solve problems.

3 MATERIALS: SmartBoard Romeo and Juliet West Side Story Essay Assignment Packets Peer Editing Packets DIFFERENTIATION: Interpersonal students will benefit from the group brainstorming and graphic organizer activity and peer editing Intrapersonal students will benefit from time to work independently on their writing Visual students will benefit from the use of the graphic organizer More able students will benefit from the ability to take a leadership role in the group discussion/brainstorming activity Less able students will benefit from an opportunity to receive feedback from their peers EXTENSION ACTIVITIES: Students will write a short reflection, comparing and contrasting this assignment with their first essay assignment, focusing on how their writing has changed.

4 Compare/Contrast Essay Romeo and Juliet and West Side Story You read both Romeo and Juliet and West Side Story. Use the comparison guide attached to identify the various parallels between the two stories. Ultimately, you will write a comparison paper that analyzes how the writers use the literary elements of setting, characterization and plot to develop a similar theme. Following is an outline of how your paper should be organized. Paragraph #1 Introduction Start by focusing on the main idea developed in each play, the idea of tragic love. This paragraph should contain the full title of both works and the names of the authors. Identify the setting of each play. End your introduction using the following thesis statement: Although the settings of these tragic love stories are vastly different, the parallel characters and plot elements of both stories help to develop the theme that. (You will have to determine what theme you want to explore.) Paragraph #2 Characters Select two or three pairs of parallel characters and explain how they play similar roles, have similar personalities, make similar decisions, and meet similar fates. Be certain to also point out if there are significant differences as well. For each pair of characters, indicate why you believe these differences are appropriate for the specific story. Paragraph #3 Plot Elements Select two or three plot elements you believe are important to the story, and explain how they are handled in their respective stories. Note any significant differences in each element. Make sure to explain why each scene/event is so important to the stories. Paragraph #4 Theme Restate what you believe to be the shared theme between the two stories. Identify how each theme is presented in the two stories. Why is this a timeless theme? Paragraph #5 Conclusion Start with a concluding phrase. Restate your main idea or your thesis in different words. You could briefly indicate which version of the story best communicates the theme to you. Leave your reader with the feeling that you are finished and avoid starting a new topic. We will work on this essay in small pieces, so be certain you complete each section when assigned. The final essay will be due on or around. It should be typed, doubled spaced, in size 12 Times New Roman. Make sure to follow MLA format.
