With the exception of the cover, fold each page in half, keeping the blank side on the outside. The cover should be folded along both sides of the spine, with the blank side facing inward.. C RIGHT E. Glue the blank side of page to the blank side of page. Continue this process for all pages; gluing to 5, 6 to 7, and so on. 5. 3 All About Lemurs Mysterious and unique, lemurs are endemic to the island of Madagascar, which means that s the only place they can be found in the wild. Lemurs are part of the primate order and they are related to monkeys and apes. Sadly, many scientists consider lemurs to be the most endangered mammals on the planet. Did You Know? Blue-eyed black lemurs are the only primates other than humans to have blue eyes! Lemurs get their name from a Latin word that means spirits of the dead. Facts & Figures There are about 05 different lemur species! Madame Berthe s mouse lemurs are small enough to fit into a teacup. Lemurs make up almost one third of all primate species in the world!

4 Distribution r tion and d Range R e RING-TAILED LEMUR Members of this well-known species are the only lemurs with striped tails. SIFAKA These leaping lemurs can jump up to 0 feet from one tree to another! MOUSE LEMUR The eight species of mouse lemurs are the smallest primates in the world. Lemurs can only be found in one place: the island of Madagascar. RED-RUFFED LEMUR These beautiful lemurs can communicate using up to twelve different calls.

5 Habitat at and Diet Lemurs eat a variety of foods and live in lots of different habitats across Madagascar. FRUIT & INSECTS Smaller lemurs usually feed on fruit and insects. PLANTS & LEAVES Larger lemurs eat mostly leaves, flowers, and even sap! RAINFORESTS Some lemurs have adapted to live in rainforests... ARID SEMI-DESERTS...while others live in more dry and arid climates. 5 6

6 Anatomy Many lemur species share a number of traits and characteristics. LARGE EYES Many lemurs are active at night and have large eyes to help them see in the dark. FACE MARKINGS A number of lemur species have light and dark markings on their faces. LONG HIND LEGS Some lemur species have long hind legs that they use for jumping and climbing. BUSHY TAIL Lemurs don t have prehensile tails. This means they can t use their tails to grab things. 7 8

The best part of my job is that every day is something different and every day I learn something new! I get to help other scientists around the world, and I get to work with amazing lemurs every day! IS IT POSSIBLE TO TRAIN LEMURS? Yes, it is! Lemurs have relatively large brains and they are smart and curious. We train them to do things to help us with our research, like how to stand on a scale, and some of them even play games on a touch screen computer! WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT LEMURS? My favorite thing about lemurs is how unique they are! The amount of diversity among lemurs is astonishing, from how different species look to their social behavior to how they move to what they eat!
