1 (1) Open Thunderbird and select Account settings from the tools menu If this is the first time Thunderbird has been opened the account wizard will be automatically started. Skip to number 3 if it has. (2) From the account settings window on the lower left click on the add account button Page 1 of 5

2 (3) On the first page of the new account wizard, make sure account is selected and click on the next button. (4) Page two of the new account wizard asks for your name. This is the name most programs will display in the from field and can be any name you want. It does not necessarily have to match your username. Most people put their first and last names in here or a nickname. If this is a business account I would recommend using just your first name and not a nickname (5) In the next box enter your full address. Click the next button once you have entered these details. 3 (6) The next page of the account wizard asks for server information. The (type of incoming mail server you are using) option should be set to POP. Enter mail.swiftnet.co.nz in the incoming and outgoing server boxes without the quotes. Click the next button once you have entered the above information. If you have multiple accounts and want each one to keep its s in a separate inbox then untick the use global inbox option. If left ticked the account will share an inbox with any other accounts told to use the global inbox. (7) The next page of the Account wizard asks for your incoming user name. Your incoming user name is the same as your full address. (e.g. username@swiftnet.co.nz) Once you have entered your incoming user name click on the next button Page 3 of 5

4 (8) The next page of the wizard will display the account name option. By default this will contain your address. If you wish you could change this name to whatever you want as long as that name is not already used by another account. (e.g. My Swiftnet account or John Doe Account). Click on the next button to continue. (9) The last page of the wizard will display and show all the settings you have entered. If the wizard ran automatically when you started Thunderbird for the first time, a Download messages now box will also be displayed. Un-tick this box if it is displayed as we still have some settings to change. Click on the finish button to close the wizard. Page 4 of 5

5 (10) Click on the Outgoing Server (SMTP) option from the list on the left of the Account Settings window. Note: Sometimes the Outgoing SMTP server you just set up in the wizard will not display on the outgoing server list until you close and open the account settings window. Close and reopen the window if needed. Once you have clicked on the SMTP server from the list on the right to highlight it click on the edit button on the far right hand side to open the SMTP server window. (11) The description box by default will be empty and it will use the server name by default for the description if this is the case. If you wish you could change this name to whatever you want as long as that name is not used by another SMTP set up. (e.g. Swiftnet SMTP Swiftnet SMTP server port 26) (12) At the bottom of the window in the security and password section, make sure the Use name and password option is ticked. The username box should also contain your full address. Click in the port box and change it to 26 The default port number of 25 is now being blocked by a lot of ISP s to prevent Trojan horse programs on infected computers from being able to send out spam and so we are running a second SMTP server on port 26 to allow you access your account easily if your computer is temporarily linked to the internet via another ISP, such as if you take your laptop to work etc. To complete the settings click the OK button to close the SMTP server window. Then click the ok button on the accounts settings window. Congratulations you have set up Thunderbird to check your account Page 5 of 5
