1 Sustainable Sourcing Advisory Board member biographies Janet Barber Independent, United Kingdom Janet Barber has national and international experience in planning and implementing public policy and field programs designed to achieve the socially and environmentally sustainable use of renewable and non-renewable natural resources. She has equivalent experience in analyzing the effectiveness of investments made, through monitoring and evaluation of projects and programs. She has worked with Forum for the Future, World Wildlife Fund (WWF), and various other NGOs and international companies. David Bright Senior Adviser Markets and Enterprise Development, Oxfam GB, United Kingdom David leads Oxfam GB s strategic work on rural and urban market and enterprise development to reduce poverty, particularly for women. As part of the Private Sector Management Team, he leads on new engagements with global businesses related to agriculture. David has developed Oxfam GB s market systems methodology to agricultural value chain development, which focuses on smallholder inclusion in supply chains, and the development of sustainable rural and women s enterprises in poverty affected regions. Along with his work with the Sustainable Sourcing Advisory Board, David is a member of the Sustainable Food Lab Advisory Board and a non-executive director of a social enterprise. His previous career was as a business developer for twelve years, working for French and British companies, having been an undergraduate in Business Management and postgraduate in Environmental Management. Colin Chartres Director General, International Water Management Institute, Sri Lanka Dr. Colin Chartres is Director General of the International Water Management Institute (IWMI). IWMI is one of the 15 research centres of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR). He has 30 years experience in research and policy reform in natural resources management in Australia and a range of developing countries. At IWMI, Dr Chartres leads a team of international scientists working on future water availability, agricultural water productivity improvement, reuse of wastewater in agriculture, ecosystem services, and water governance and management. Prior to joining IWMI in 2007, he was Chief Science Advisor to Australia s National Water Commission where he focused on ensuring reform processes were based as best possible on scientific evidence. Previously he held senior research and management positions with Australia s CSIRO, the Bureau of Rural Science and Geoscience Australia and has also worked in academia and the private sector. He has published over 100 papers and book chapters and has just completed a book entitled Out of Water: from abundance to scarcity in 25 years and solutions to the world s water problems.
2 Daniel Gagnier Chair of the Board, International Institute for Sustainable Development, Canada Mr. Dan Gagnier was appointed Chief of Staff to Quebec Premier Jean Charest in 2007, and stepped down from the position in September, Mr. Gagnier was formerly Alcan Inc. s senior vice president, Corporate and External Affairs. In this position, his responsibilities included corporate communications, government relations and environment, health and safety. Mr. Gagnier was appointed vice president, Corporate Affairs with Alcan in December 1994 and in 1995 his responsibilities were expanded to include environment, occupational health and safety issues for Alcan on a worldwide basis. Prior to joining Alcan in 1994, Mr. Gagnier held a number of positions with the governments of Canada, Ontario and Saskatchewan. From 1972 to 1982, the Department of External Affairs posted him overseas to diplomatic assignments in Mexico, Yugoslavia and the United Kingdom, as well as to functions in Ottawa. Alan Knight OBE Independent, United Kingdom Alan has nearly 20 years experience of working with global and national organisations advising them at board level on sustainable development. Currently Alan is the independent advisor to the Virgin Group. He also runs the Virgin Earth Challenge (a US$25 million prize for carbon sequestration). He has worked with companies as diverse as B&Q, Kingfisher, SABMiller, Coca Cola, Axa Insurance, Body Shop, the Alberta Oil Sands Industry and served on several Government Advisory roles. For 9 years he was a commissioner in the Sustainable Development Commission. He helped create the Forest Stewardship Council, introduced the concept of "choice editing" into the product policy debate and frequently lectures on sustainable lifestyles and product centric corporate sustainability. He is a visiting professor at the Exeter University Business School and a Senior Associate of the Cambridge Programme for Sustainability Leadership. He was awarded the OBE in June 1998 and in 2005 the US-based Rainforest Alliance presented him with a lifelong award for his contribution towards finding solutions to rainforest. Christophe Liebon Director, Intertek, Hong Kong As Global Environmental Impact Solutions Director based in Hong-Kong, Christophe supports Intertek business strategy towards the global portfolio of Intertek clients with a specific focus on consumer products. Christophe has been working in the field of Sustainability, and 3 rd party certification for Quality and Compliance for more than 12 years and held successive positions within Intertek where he supported client s sustainability strategy from the design to its implementation on a global basis. He has developed Intertek Sustainability offering for consumer products and manages its implementation on a global basis for Intertek Group.
3 Richard Perkins World Wildlife Fund United Kingdom (WWF-UK), United Kingdom Mr. Perkins studied agricultural and forest sciences at Oxford and agricultural economics in Wales. He has worked in Kenya, Lesotho, Eurostat, and Scotland, before starting at WWF-UK (formerly the WorldWide Fund for Nature) in August Mr. Perkins works as a member of a number of different teams in WWF. These are the UK Future Landscapes, European Agriculture and Rural Development and the Global Trade and Investment Core teams. He is involved with research and advocacy projects in the UK, Europe and globally on the environmental impact of food, farming, rural development, and agricultural trade. He is also a member of a number of UK and European and transatlantic NGO networks addressing food, sustainable agriculture and rural development. Rudy Rabbinge University of Wageningen, The Netherlands Dr. Rudy Rabbinge is University Professor in Sustainable Development and Food Security at Wageningen University in the Netherlands. He is a former member of the Senate of the Netherlands Parliament and chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Royal Institute of the Tropics. Rabbinge has led various missions and agricultural programs in developing countries and served as editor of several journals. He was a chair of the board of trustees of two CGIAR centers and co-chair of the Inter- Academy Panel on Food Security and Agricultural Productivity in Africa. He is also a member of the board of the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA) and chairman of the Council for Earth and Life Sciences of the Royal Academy of Sciences. He formerly served as deputy chairman of the IFDC board and chairman of the Science Council of the CGIAR. Rabbinge also serves on the boards of various international agribusiness firms. He holds degrees in phytopathology, entomology, theoretical production ecology and philosophy of science from Wageningen Agricultural University. He is also a member of the High Level Panel of Experts of the CFS of the United Nations. Tang Huajun Vice President, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Beijing, China Dr. Tang Huajun is a research professor and vice president of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS), Beijing. He received his B.S.(1982) in agronomy from South-west Agricultural University, China, and M.S.(1987), Ph.D.(1991) and post-doctorate (1993) with greatest distinction in Physical Land Resources from University of Ghent, Belgium. After his graduation, he worked for the Institute of Agricultural Resources and Regional Planning, CAAS. Dr. Tang was promoted to Director General in 1996 and has become a full professor since He has organized and sponsored more than a dozen international conferences in the past 10 years. Over the years, he has served as a consultant to a number of governmental agencies, nonprofit organizations and companies including, World Bank, FAO, UNESCAP. His research areas include land use and crop modeling; remote sensing and GIS applications; agri-regional development. He has collaborated with colleagues and institutes at Belgium, United States, Australia, Japan. He has published more than 80 papers in international and Chinese scientific journals and has received a number of awards and honors including the election as a corresponding member of Belgian Royal Academy of Overseas Science, President of the Chinese Society of Agricultural Resources and Regional Planning.
4 Camilla Toulmin CEO, International Institute for Environment and Development, United Kingdom Camilla Toulmin has been Director (CEO) of the International Institute for Environment & Development (IIED) since During that period she has re-established IIED as a much-respected voice and source of new ideas and evidence on environment and development issues. She has reshaped the organisation better to deliver on its priority areas natural resources, climate change, sustainable markets, urbanisation and governance, and she has focused on building an effective communications team. In 2004, she ensured that the implications of climate change be integrated into all of the institute s research. IIED s work on urban poverty, markets for ecosystem services, land rights and adaptation to climate change is widely recognised, and the institute has an established position at major events, such as the Climate Change Conference of the Parties. IIED has contributed to the Stern Review, the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment, and the IPCC. The institute is now leading the Global Coalition for a Sustainable Economy and is an active contributor to the UNEP Green Economy Initiative. An economist by training, her work has focused on social, economic, and environmental development in dryland Africa. She established and ran the IIED Drylands Programme from This combined field research, policy analysis, capacity building and advocacy, and involved engaging with people at many different levels from farmers and researchers, to national governments, NGOs, donor agencies and international bodies. Camilla has maintained a strong research and academic interest in land and agricultural issues in Africa. Anne Wallin Director EH&S and Sustainability, DOW Chemical Europe, Switzerland Dr. Anne Wallin is the Director, EH&S and Sustainability for Dow Europe, Middle East, and Africa for The Dow Chemical Company. Her responsibilities include the areas of Toxicology, Product Safety and Compliance, Regulatory Affairs and Sustainability. In addition to her regional responsibilities she retains her global responsibility for Sustainable Chemistry and Life Cycle Assessment, including leadership of the 2015 Sustainable Chemistry Goal project team which is integrating Sustainable Chemistry across all disciplines, functions and business in Dow. Anne began her career in Dow in Research and Development as a process chemist in the Agricultural Chemicals Department. After several years she moved to Environment, Safety and Health where she held a variety of roles in both research and development and manufacturing. Anne joined Dow Public Affairs in 1999, becoming the issue leader for Dow s chlor-vinyl businesses and leading a leveraged global network and representing Dow in several major trade associations. In 2007 she joined the Sustainability function as Program Director for the 2015 Sustainable Chemistry goal and leading the Life Cycle Assessment Expert Group. Tensie Whelan Executive Director, Rainforest Alliance, U.S.A. Tensie Whelan serves as Executive Director of the Rainforest Alliance. She has been involved with the Rainforest Alliance since 1990, first as a board member, and then later as a consultant, becoming the executive director in 2000.
5 Whelan served as the executive director of the New York League of Conservation Voters from 1992 until 1997, prior to which she was Vice President of Conservation Information at the National Audubon Society. Whelan also worked as a journalist and environmental communications consultant in Costa Rica, and she was the managing editor of Ambio -- an international environmental journal based in Stockholm. For several years prior to coming to the Rainforest Alliance, Whelan worked as a management consultant to various environmental and political groups, including the Environmental Defense Fund, the Hudson River Park Alliance and the Federation of State Leagues of Conservation Voters, among others. Whelan's published work includes one of the first books on ecofriendly tourism, Nature Tourism: Managing for the Environment (1991, Island Press). She is the Chair of the Brooklyn Bridge Park Coalition and served on the boards of the League of Conservation Voters Education Fund and the Vermont League of Conservation Voters. She holds an M.A. in International Communication from American University's School of International Service and a B.A. in Political Science from New York University.
