3 Maths During the year the children continue to learn a variety of mental and written methods for the four operations. They will develop their skills in the areas of shape, space and measures and data handling. We will have a focus on problem solving as well as word problems. There is also a focus on mental strategies although there is no longer a mental maths paper in the SATs. This has been replaced by a 30 minute arithmetic paper. There are also two 45 minute non-calculator papers.
4 Maths contd Setting no longer happens throughout the school as the emphasis is on Maths Mastery. In Year 6, the children need to cover the full curriculum to ensure they are ready for the SATs in May. To enable the children to work at their pace, we will be using a mixture of class and group maths throughout the week.
5 English The children will get the opportunity to write in a variety of genres throughout the year. Our Literacy writing will include work linked to our topics, including fiction, non-fiction and poetry. We will be focusing on developing children s grammar and punctuation skills in preparation for the SATs test. Spellings are now taught using the Oxford Owl Read, write, inc scheme. This is taught for 15 minutes every day. We will also be covering the spelling patterns and words included in the SATs test.
6 English contd We will be further developing children s comprehension skills in guided reading sessions using past SATs papers to ensure children are confident with the format We will be using whole class reading books to allow children the chance to read out loud to their peers.
7 Curriculum Our science topic this term is Energy and Sound, with a particular emphasis on planning investigations. We are continuing with Empiribox and will be covering a chemistry and a biology topic in the other terms. Topics this year include the Maya, the Vikings and the Victorians. Art and DT will be linked to our topic work. French - lessons in Beech class will be taught by a Mme Tyner from Presdales, Mr Hetherington will be teaching Juniper class using Tout Le Monde.
8 SATs Taken in May, tests in English and Maths Practice run-throughs of all papers Parents meeting held nearer the time
9 Homework Arithmetic homework will be set on a Friday to prepare the children for the following week s lessons. Spellings will be given regularly, using the RWI log book. Grammar topics will be given on a Friday, to be returned on a Wednesday. Any other necessary homework will be given out on a Friday (as needed) and children will be informed of the return date.
10 PE days Beech: Indoor Tuesday, Outdoor -Thursday (Mrs Holman) Juniper: Indoor Tuesday Outdoor Thursday (Mrs Holman), Children will need trainers and a tracksuit for outdoor PE on cold days, and plain navy shorts and white round-necked T-shirt and plimsolls for indoor PE. Earrings need to be removed or covered in micropore tape.
11 Assembly and Playtimes These are still split between Lower KS2 and Upper KS2. Joint assembly on Monday and (Headteacher) Wednesday (singing).
12 Food Healthy snacks only for morning break time, e.g. fresh fruit or vegetables. Please ensure there are no nuts in your child s snack or packed lunch.
13 Isle of Wight school journey A highlight of the year for Year 6! Takes place in May after SATs and is a very enjoyable week. Lots more information and a parents meeting nearer the time.
14 Preparation for secondary schools Throughout the year we have links with secondary schools. We have French taught by a specialist teacher from Presdales. We sometimes have the opportunity to have visiting teachers or to visit secondary schools for various events. In the summer term, teachers from the secondary schools visit and meet the children and the children spend a whole day in their new school. We do transition activities in school. The Isle of Wight trip helps children to get used to being independent and working with different children.
15 How parents can help Help with guided reading would be very much appreciated. Anyone who can commit to helping us weekly with guided reading please let us know after the meeting (Beech:11:45 12:15; Juniper: 10:45 11:15) Please read with your children and talk about what they have been learning at school. Children also benefit from help with practising times ables and spellings. It is very important for children to know their times tables and division facts, please ensure that if your child does not know them all that they have regular opportunities to practise them at home. In preparation for secondary school encourage your child to take responsibility for handing in homework, bringing PE kit on correct day etc
16 Items to have in school Please ensure children have a coat in school at all times in case of inclement weather. Please ensure correct uniform is worn and named, including black school shoes. Please also make sure that long hair is tied back and nail varnish is removed Children are not allowed to wear jewellery, including loom band bracelets, in class. Watches and Fitbit type devices are allowed, but the school is not responsible for damage or loss. Please can all children have a named water bottle so they can easily access a drink in the classroom. Cups and drinking water are available.
