1 JANUARY NEWS École Élémentaire School Up-Coming Dates & Events: Monday, January 11th is a provincial Pro-D Day. School is not in session for students. Les Cornouillers family night of folk dance is scheduled for Thursday, January 21st at 6:30pm. Admission is free of charge. A food concession will be available. Thank you to our PAC for sponsoring this event Save the date - Tuesday, February 6:30pm MATH MANIA comes to Campus View This is a free family event for our community sponsored by the PIMS at UVic. Math Mania will present a variety of interactive demonstrations, puzzles, games and art related activities. French Immersion Kindergarten & Grade 1 Registration Week is January Our office will be open on January 11th from 8am to 3pm to accept registrations. Campus View is proud to be presenting Willy Wonka Kids a musical adaption of the book by Roald Dahl, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory May 18th & 19th Specific role auditions for the musical will take place in the upcoming weeks. All Campus View choir members are welcome to audition for these roles. More information will be forthcoming from Mrs. Onuma. Parents and volunteers are needed to support rehearsals, set design, props, costumes, make-up, lighting and other technical support. A volunteer meeting will take place on Wednesday, January 27th at 7pm in the music room. We appreciate your support in advance 1
2 Campus View Grade 4 & 5 students interested in joining our Floor Hockey team are asked to attend an information session this Thursday, January 7th at lunch-recess. Games will take place in the gym after school on Thursdays - beginning Thursday, January 14th from 2:45-4:00pm. " Students in Grades 4 & 5 who are interested in Lego Robotics are asked to meet with Mr. Hovis on Friday, January 8th at lunch-recess for an information session. Our robotics program will take place once a week after school. More information will be provided at the January 8th meeting and a letter will be sent home. " Our January PAC Meeting is Thursday, January 14th at 9:00am in Portable D. We look forward to seeing you here" In February, all students in Grades 2 and 4 have the opportunity to attend a symphony performance at UVic More info from teachers will be forthcoming." On Tuesday, February 23rd Campus View will have a visit from a group of pre-service teachers from Yasuda Women s University in Japan. We look forward to welcoming these teachers to our school Afternoon Drive-Thru Closure A reminder, due to ongoing safety issues our school s drive-thru is now closed in the afternoons. The drivethru will only be used for our after school care provider s buses and vans. After school supervision is provided from 2:41pm to 2:56pm on both the primary and intermediate playgrounds. Please continue to be cognizant of our neighbours and avoid blocking or obstructing their driveways. Inclement Weather We are now approaching the season when inclement weather may affect the safety and welfare of students. In particular, snowy weather has the potential to cause school closure or some School District services to be suspended. 3 KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION INFORMATION All children born in 2011 are eligible to begin Kindergarten in September Regular (English) Kindergarten Registration: January 25-29, 2016 at your catchment area school. Registration is between 8:00 am - 3:00 pm and will be processed according to the time of registration. To register, please bring: 1. Proof of your child s age and citizenship status. This can be a birth certificate, passport, landed immigrant authorization. Parents of children who are not Canadian Citizens or Landed Immigrants or do not have a birth certificate for their child are required to contact our International Student Program at (ph.) prior to registration. 2. Proof of your address. This can be your driver s licence, a utility bill with your current postal code, etc. 3. Your child s BC Medical Care Card. For information regarding French Immersion Kindergarten, please see the next page of this newsletter. General questions? Please call the school board office at
4 French Immersion Kindergarten and Grade 1 Registration for the School Year: Monday, January 11th to Friday, January 15th Any student entering Kindergarten or Grade 1 can attend Immersion in the Greater Victoria School District. French Immersion is a district program and is not offered at all schools. Transportation is the responsibility of parents. No prior knowledge of French is expected or required. Registration during Early French Immersion Registration Week is important. Families who register during the week of January 11-15, 2016 have priority for placement. Note: Regular Kindergarten program registration takes place the week of January 25-29, 2016, as well as all kindergarten transfer requests. To register, go in person to your Immersion catchment school. Families who register during registration week have priority for placement. Since Immersion is a district program, space is not reserved for catchment families that might arrive later in the year. Registration is not based on a first come first served basis. For schools where there are fewer spaces than the number of applicants, a random, supervised draw will take place in accordance to the priorities below. Registrations without the required documentation will be pending until all the required documentation is submitted. Information with respect to the required documentation can be found on our district website by following this link. Any applications missing the required documentation as of 4:00 pm on the last day of early French Immersion Registration Week will not be considered for priority placement. Schools will verify the applicant s residential address to ensure students are registered at their French Immersion catchment school. Program placements will be offered according to the following priorities: 1 Sibling 2 In catchment 3 Out of catchment but unable to access catchment school 4 Out of catchment 5 Out of district Placement Procedures All French Immersion program placements are based on the availability of space and facilities. Placement of students will take place in accordance to the above priorities. For schools where there are fewer spaces than the number of applicants, a random, supervised draw in accordance to the above priorities, will be conducted. Students will be placed based on the draw order. Wait lists will also be established according to the draw order. Notification of Placement Families will be notified of the results via and a mailed letter. Notification will take place during the week of January 18, Note: Students not accepted into French Immersion for Kindergarten MUST re-register at their English catchment school during Kindergarten Registration Week (January 25-29, 2016). 5 FAMILIES WITH A CHILD IN GRADE 5 ENGLISH WISHING TO ENTER LATE IMMERSION IN GRADE 6: Late French Immersion Information Evening for Parents and Students: January 19, 2016, 6:30 PM, SJ Willis Auditorium, 923 Topaz Avenue Greater Victoria Board of Education is pleased to offer the Late French Immersion option. Late Immersion is open to any student entering Grade 6. It is a District program and as such, is not offered in all neighbourhood Middle Schools. Transportation is the responsibility of the parents. Late French Immersion is offered at the following Middle Schools: * Arbutus * Cedar Hill * Central * Lansdowne * Shoreline Applying to register in Late French Immersion: To apply to enroll in Late Immersion, go to your preferred Late Immersion school during Immersion Registration Week (January 25 to January 29, 2016). There you will be invited to complete a Late French Immersion Application Form indicating your preferred school and any other school(s) you would be willing to attend. There are no catchments for entry into Late Immersion. Families who apply to register during District Immersion Registration Week have priority over later applicants for placement. Applications are accepted on a first come, first served basis according to the following priorities: in or out of District with a sibling at the school in District out of District Should demand exceed capacity at any school, families are wait listed on a first come, first served basis according to the priorities shown above. Families will be informed of placement as soon as possible after registration week and by the end of February at the latest. Continuing in Secondary Immersion: Immersion students (Early and Late) follow an Immersion pathway. Immersion pathways are generally not exactly the same as English pathways. The following indicates the current pathways for Late Immersion students: Arbutus Reynolds Cedar Hill Reynolds Lansdowne Oak Bay Central Victoria High Shoreline Esquimalt IMPORTANT NOTICE for those families considering Lansdowne for Late Immersion, as of September 2012, students entering grade 6 Late Immersion at Lansdowne continue on to Oak Bay. 5
