This colorful poster and activity guide will help introduce your students to the processes that cause change in the rocks that make up our Earth. Inside this Really Good Stuff set you ll find: The Rock Cycle Poster, 24" x 19" This Really Good Stuff Activity Guide Introducing the Rock Cycle It is important that students understand the concept of a cycle. The word can be taught through the familiar concept of the recycling of aluminum cans. The important concepts involve the idea that things change in appearance or properties but are not destroyed during the cycle and that a cycle can repeat itself over and over again. It is also important to review the three types of rocks: Igneous, Sedimentary, and Metamorphic. Next, stress the idea that changes in rocks happen over a very long period of time. Point out to students that some words on the poster are inside arrows. Tell students that these words show the process of the cycle-what is happening in the cycle. Advise the class that the words that are not inside arrows are product words-physical things that form and change as the cycle progresses. Students will have the opportunity to practice identifying the processes and products of the Rock Cycle in Activity 3 of this Really Good Stuff Activity Guide. Activity 1: How Rocks Change or the Rock Cycle A good part of our Earth is made up of rock. These rocks are always changing. However, because the changes take thousands of years to happen, we cannot directly observe the changes. The Rock Cycle helps us understand how rocks change. The chart below shows some changes to the rocks and the processes that cause those changes. Use this chart to help you follow the cycle on the poster. Pay attention to what the pictures on the poster are telling you. Description of Rock at start Process that causes change Result of Change 1. Hot lava comes near the surface of earth. As it reaches the surface, the lava hardens as it cools. Igneous rock is formed. 2. The rock breaks. Weathering of rock by tree roots, f reezing, thawing, wind and rain occurs. 3. There is movement of tiny pieces of rock. 4. Small round pieces of rock are moving away from original site. 5. Sediment or tiny pieces of rock accumulate in one place and begin to pile up. 6. Sedimentary rock is covered by more sediment. 7. Metamorphic rock is deep within the earth. Transportation or erosion of rock pieces occurs by rain and rivers. Deposition of pieces occurs by river or wind as the water or wind slows down. Compacting( pushed together) and cementation(stuck together) are caused by pressure. Metamorphism (change) is caused by heat and pressure deep within the earth. Rock melts from intense heat at the center of earth. Thousands of tiny pieces of rock are formed. Rock is carried to a different location and rough edges of rock become smooth as they slide over one another. Rock pieces fall to the bottom and become sediment. Sedimentary rock is formed. Metamorphic rock is formed. Rock becomes magma. 8. Magma rises to the surface and becomes lava. The cycle repeats itself. The cycle repeats itself. All activity guides can be found online:

3 Activity 3: Products and Processes of the Rock Cycle It is important to understand both the products and processes of the Rock Cycle. A product is a physical thing that takes up space and has weight, like lava. A process is an activity, action or force, like melting. These actions or processes are what cause one product to change to a new product. Look at the list of words below and classify each word as a product or process of the Rock Cycle. Put a check in the appropriate column to show if the word is a product or process. 4 Activity 4: Activities for Rock Cycle Performance Assessments (A) Make a Model to Show How Rocks Change Models are often used in science to show things which are too large or too small to see and also are used to show processes which are too slow or too fast to observe. 1. Use the following materials to make a model of a sedimentary rock and then change it into a metamorphic rock using pressure and heat from your hand. 2. Draw a colored picture of your model to show each step. Label your picture. Make sure you label the processes and the products in the change. Materials: Clay in 3 different colors 2 sheets of wax paper Small objects like beads, foam pellets, or buttons Rolling pin Heat from hands (B) Write a Story about the Life of a Rock Write and illustrate a story for a younger child about the life of a rock. Pretend you are the rock and tell the story from the rock s point of view. Make sure you (the rock) have changed into another type of rock. Use lots of descriptive words to show these changes and to explain the processes or actions which have caused the changes. Extension Activities 1. Research the ocean plates and the land plates of the earth's crust. Explain how these plates affect the rock cycle. Draw labeled pictures to show your information. Include information on volcanoes and earthquakes in your report. 2. Define the terms intrusive igneous rock and extrusive igneous rock. Write a paragraph comparing the formation of intrusive and extrusive igneous rocks. Give examples of each of these types of igneous rocks. 3. Your friend says that at one time all rocks on earth were igneous rocks. Agree or disagree with that statement and defend your answer based on what you know about the rocks and the rock cycle. 4. Pick two rocks from each category of rock listed below. Do research on the rocks. Make a poster chart showing a picture and description of each rock; explain how each type of rock was formed, and the use of each rock.
