Drink water instead of sugary beverages, such as soda pop, sports drinks, energy drinks and juices Choose healthy options, such as fat-free/1% milk, 100% fruit juices, or unsweetened tea Fact Finding Mission Discussion & Check for Learning You will have a Bingo Card with questions. Your challenge is to find the answers on fact cards hidden all around camp. (If there are areas which are off limits, be sure to clearly explain this here!) Your group will travel together with your adult leader to areas of camp to find the fact cards. Leaders and counselors are around camp to help guide you. Please be courteous to other groups. Work on your own. A leader will only work with one group at a time. What do you do when you find a fact card? Look over the Bingo Card. Match the Bingo Card question with the fact card answer. Write the fact card answer in the correct square on the Bingo Card. As a group, go search for another fact card and repeat. You have 30 minutes to find as many facts as possible. 3 Think Day Class Activity Materials Beverage scenarios Decision Making Cards Pledge Cards Identify internal and external influences in food and beverage choices. Follow the decision-making process and choose healthy beverages. Lesson Outline Beverage Scenarios, Decisionmaking Process Rethink Your Drink Pledge : 1. Discuss: How do you decide what to drink? (examples: taste, what is available, what everyone else is drinking, the cost, etc.) Two kinds of cues that may affect our drink decisions are internal and external. Internal cues are signals that come from within our bodies. Can you think of examples of internal cues? (examples: thirst, hunger, health concern, personal preference, values) External cues come from our environment. What might be examples of external cues? (examples: TV, radio, billboards, commercials, ads, peer pressure, family habits, smells, seeing a drink machine or sign, etc.) We will talk about what influences your personal decisions. At the end of class, you can decide if you will take the Rethink Your Drink Pledge. Activities: Beverage Scenarios & Decision-making Process 1. Explain and carry out the Beverage Scenarios activity: Everyone stand if you are able. I will read a statement. If you think the decision was influenced by external influences, walk to the right side of the room. If you think the decision was influenced by internal influences, walk to the left side of the room. Talk about the information on the back of each Beverage Scenario card. 2. Review the Decision-making Process. As a group, choose a real-life situation. Follow the decision making process. Rethink Your Drink Pledge: 1. Hand out the pledge cards. Read it together. Ask participants if they feel ready to commit to the pledge. If they do, they may sign it. Discuss where they will keep their pledge to remind them about it. 2. For those who are not ready to pledge, accept their decision. Encourage them to take the card and think about pledging when they are ready.

4 Think Day Assembly Materials : Rethink Your Drink Game Show questions and answers Tape Sidewalk chalk or markers and large posters Identify internal and external influences in food and beverage choices. Follow the decision-making process and choose healthy beverages. : 1. Divide into four groups. Two groups will play the Rethink Your Drink Game Show first and two groups will develop ads with sidewalk chalk. Halfway through the assembly time, groups will switch activities. 2. Set up an area for the game. Ask a leader to keep score. 3. Prepare materials for the billboard ads. Identify large sidewalk spaces where all four billboard ads can be drawn and viewed. If this is not feasible, have large posters or sheets of butcher paper. Rethink Your Drink Game Show Activity: 1. Explain the game rules. 2. The team with the most points wins. Billboard Ads Activity: Rethink Your Drink Game Show Billboard Ads 1. Ask each group to design and draw a billboard ad to influence youths to choose healthy drinks. The drawing should be as large as possible. 2. If possible, digitally capture the ads. Post to social media. 3. Optional: Ask a judging panel to select ads, such as most colorful, influential, creative,. Could provide recognition at council circle or a small prize. : 1. After groups finish both activities, have everyone view all the billboard ads.

5 Water Day Assembly Materials : Plastic eggs filled with game questions and two answer keys Sheets, cut in half, knotted and then placed in freezer at least 24 hours prior to activity Fruit Smoothies recipe card, ingredients, and supplies Drink water instead of sugary beverages Egg Hunt Activity Frozen Sheet Activity Fruit Smoothies : 1. Put a question in each egg. Hide them around camp. Ask two leaders to check answers. Give each the answer key. 2. At least 24 hours in advance, knot the sheets as many times as possible. Thoroughly soak sheets in water and put in a freezer. 3. Divide participants into four groups. Two groups will play the Scavenger Hunt first and two groups will play Frozen Sheet first. Halfway through the assembly time, groups switch activities. Egg Hunt Activity: 1. Explain to the group: Pretend your group is stranded on an island with no drinking water. There are hidden eggs on the island. Each represents two glasses of water. To survive, you must find four eggs (which represents 64 ounces of water about what an individual needs). When you find an egg, you must correctly answer the question to be able to drink the water. A group member goes to one of the two leaders to check the answer. The first team to get four correct egg answers wins. If the group cannot answer the question correctly, they go search for another egg. 2. If a group finishes early, inform them that they had to run from a bear and will need an extra egg of water to survive. 3. If a group is struggling, give them an egg of water and tell them they collected rain water that day. Optional: If the camp allows the use of cell phones, you may allow them to search the internet for answers, but we discourage this. Frozen Sheet Activity: 1. Give each group a knotted sheet. 2. The first group to unknot their sheet completely wins! Fruit Smoothies: 1. Each youth puts a portion of fruit in their bag. Seal completely. Gently smash the fruit as much as possible. 2. Add yogurt and milk. Seal and massage until well mixed. 3. Pour into a cup or put a straw in the bag. Add milk if too thick. Discuss & Check for Learning: 1. Why is a fruit smoothie a healthy drink choice? 2. What other fruit would you like to try? When would you make it?

6 Water Day Class Activity Materials : For each pair of participants: metal bowl, very clean small glass container (not plastic and lids are not necessary) For class to share: table or rock salt ice Note: tablespoon measurer bottled purified water (water purification process must say purified by reverse osmosis for experiment to work most bottled water is processed this way) Large container with a lid or aluminum foil, fresh or frozen fruit, decaffeinated tea bags, ice, cups If you have access to YouTube, watch one of the videos on instant ice. Drink water instead of sugary beverages. It is supercool and refreshing! Homemade sun tea is also a healthy alternative to sugary drinks. Flavored Sun Tea Activity Supercooling Water Activity : 1. Assemble and organize materials and space for the activities. Flavored Sun Tea Activity: 1. Explain the activity: You can make healthy drinks at home, such as the fruitinfused water we have at the camp hydration stations. Today, we will make sun tea with tea bags, fruit, and the sun s warmth. 2. Fill the container with the warmest water you can get from the faucet. To speed up the process, use twice the recommended amount of tea bags. Cover with a lid, foil, or plastic wrap. To steep, set it outside in direct sun while you do the next activity. Supercooling Water Activity: 1. Put one set of supplies on a table for each pair of participants. 2. Put 2 tablespoons of purified water into the glass. 3. Place the glass in a metal bowl of ice, so the ice level ice is higher than the water level. Do not spill any ice in the water glass. 4. Carefully sprinkle a couple tablespoons of salt onto the ice. Do not get any salt in the glass of water. 5. Wait 15 minutes for the water to cool below freezing. 6. While waiting, ask youths: What will happen? Will the water freeze? What is supercooling? Explain that supercooling water is bringing the temperature below 32 (freezing point) without forming crystals and becoming solid ice. It is frozen but not solid. After disturbing the liquid, it will become a solid. 7. After 15 minutes, either pour the cooled water over a piece of ice or drop a small piece of ice into the glass. Watch it freeze. Discuss & Check for Learning Enjoy Flavored Sun Tea 1. Put fruit and ice in cups. Add sun tea and stir. For more fruity flavor, crush the fruit to release the flavor. 2. Talk about it: Do you make tea at home? Do you buy bottled tea at the store? How does this compare in taste, cost, and the amount of added sugar? It is a healthier option? Would you make this at home and show your family?
