Claude Monet (Mo-NAY) Self-portrait, 1886 Monet was a French artist. At age 15, he was paid to do caricatures, drawing people with exaggerated features for comic effect. He liked to use short brush strokes, dabbles, and splashes of pretty colors to catch light and reflections in his paintings. He developed a style that did not focus on detail, but on capturing the moment. Do you know what that style was called?

La Grenouillere, 1869 Impressionism Impressionism is a style in which the artist captures the image without detail, using bright or bold colors with short visible brush strokes. Notice the short brush strokes and beautiful colors. Paintings of gardens and reflections in water are the most recognized Monet works. Monet s paintings aren t very detailed and rather than replicate the scene before him, he focused on painting what the scene said to him. Monet used the contrasting colors to create movement, depth and light. Even though there are no details, what images can you pick out? What colors stand out? What season? How do you know? How does the picture make you feel?

Impression, Sunrise, 1874 This painting Impression Sunrise (which depicted sunlight dancing and shimmering on water), gave the name to the entire Impressionist movement. Monet felt that nature knows no black or white and nature knows no line. These beliefs resulted in this artist creating beautifully colorful and energetic pieces of work. The leading member of the Impressionists, Claude Monet s focus was to capture nature's wonderful light. Where was Monet when he painted this? What would he be able to see, hear, smell, feel? Which colors did he use? He didn t use black he felt it had a dulling effect. Instead he used complementary colors, e.g. lots of blues and purples dark layered on top of each other with the complimentary yellows and oranges. How does Monet give the feeling of distance? Perspective? (Ships are faded in the distance).

Water Lilies, 1897 Monet had this Japanese bridge built in his garden in Giverny, France. This is where Monet painted nature on the spot instead of inside a studio, as most artists did at that time. How does the picture make you feel? How would you describe this picture? What wildlife would you expect to see if you visited this pond?

Water Lilies, 1904 This is one of a series of about 250 oil paintings. As part of his gardening plans, Monet had a pond dug and planted with lilies in Working on as many as eight paintings per day of the same subject, he would paint throughout the day as light and weather shifted. Monet painted water lilies almost exclusively for the rest of his career. He worked continuously attempting to capture every observation, impression, and reflection of the flowers and water. Imagine... you shrank to the size of a frog and you were at this pond in France... What sounds would you hear? What would you smell? What would you see? Which lily pad would you choose to settle on for a while? Are there any places where there is no paint? Monet uses layering of paint very effectively. The water is painted fairly thinly sometimes the texture of the canvas can be seen. Other areas are painted over and over with many layers. The flowers are thick globs of paint that project from the surface and plants tend to have lively swirls that suggest movement.

Fun Facts: Claude started to sell charcoal paintings when he was 11 He would often run away from school to go on walks along the beach Claude continued to paint through the last years of his life even though he was nearly blind Monet was friends with Pissarro, Cezanne, Renoir, Sisley, and Bazille. He once said "Everyone discusses my art and pretends to understand, as if it were necessary to understand, when it is simply necessary to love." Now let's create our own Impressionist art!
