8 European Spatial Planning The key challenges that Europe faces (therefore) demand closer cooperation between states, regions, cities, other regions and sectoral policies at all relevant levels. Spatial planning is the most effective means of facilitating this cooperation, and can achieve smart, inclusive and sustainable growth and territorial cohesion in Europe especially for metropolitan areas.

15 Greenmetropolis (2008) Integration of former mining region across three states. The role of the planner as a facilitator in crossing administrative and indeed national boundaries is to be applauded. Cross Border

16 Regional Regeneration Limburg (2014) Response to closure of large industry (Ford). The jury finds the strategic and planned approach to solving a wide range of social, economic and environmental issues through various action programmes, to be a particularly good example of planning for regeneration at a regional scale.

17 Regional River Park Po River (2010) Long term sustainability of the River Po ecosystem. The Jury was impressed by the innovative and comprehensive approach to development of combined policies for river management and conservation of both natural resources and cultural heritage in the context of a large and economically expansive region.

18 Geneva (2014) - Combining planning for energy production and consumption with spatial planning. The territory becomes a physical framework for the provision of an overall strategy for energy and land use within which individual projects consistent with the strategy can be developed. 19 Urban Regeneration Ile de France (2012) Replace dysfunctional housing estate. The jury was impressed by the way in which the idea of the Garden City has been applied in a large scale urban regeneration project.

20 City Centre Redevelopment Madrid Centro (2012) Long term strategy for regeneration of central area of European capital. The jury appreciated the way in which complex issues related to culture, identity, history, social and economic equity, climate and environment have been linked and dealt with in a holistic manner through a spatial planning strategy.

21 Infrastructure Project Torino (2010) - Cover over a dividing railway line with new development zone. The planning profession was central to the integration of new infrastructure a new road system on top of the existing railway bringing new urban functions and landscapes and thus introducing a new centrality to the city.

22 Brownfield Redevelopment Fornebu (2014) - Regeneration of former airport. Long term spatial planning facilitates holistic approach to harmonise a complex range of environmental issues in coordinated way and allow high intensity of land use for residential and commercial purposes.

23 Public Participation Stonebridge, London (2008) Housing estate reconstruction. The Jury was impressed with the way in which this urban regeneration and reconstruction project was approached, in directly involving the residents of the area.
