2 Accounting Education: Charting the Course through a Perilous Future A Joint Project of AAA, AICPA, IMA, and the Big 5 by W. Steve Albrecht and Robert J. Sack August 2000 WHERE ACCOUNTING EDUCATION COMES FROM, WHERE WE ARE GOING We understand information systems and we excel in teaching the oldest and most established information system. We need to move beyond financial accounting and help business and our students to develop information systems they need to make critical, strategic decisions. We need to move beyond the gathering of the data and help businesses and our students to develop new ways of interpreting and using data. Those expanded opportunities are ours to lose
3 We do not teach students how technology has reshaped everything we do in business. * Is there a gap between what we teach about accounting and how businesses interact and use accounting, especially in the required accounting courses that all business majors take? *W. Steve Albrecht, Brigham Young University; Robert J. Sack, University of Virginia; study published by American Accounting Association,

TODAY S LAMENT: We have spent far too much time resting on our traditions and looking in the rearview mirror when we should have been teaching to the future.
