5 A strategy that works with you Whether you are searching for a reliable place to invest your retirement assets, an attractive return for your retirement rollover funds, additional stability to your investment portfolio, or a way to provide consistency of returns, you can consider it in a John Hancock Fixed Annuity. a fixed annuity offers many benefits Your money goes to work immediately When you invest in a John Hancock Fixed Annuity, 100% of your money goes to work immediately at competitive rates that are guaranteed, regardless of market fluctuations. You can choose a single guarantee period from 3, 5, 7, or 10 years, or whatever is available at the time of purchase. When selecting a guarantee period you should consider your liquidity needs for the period s duration. At withdrawal, tax-deferred performance would be reduced by income taxes on the gains. Withdrawals are subject to a 10% federal tax penalty if made prior to age 59 1 /2. Typically, MVA fixed annuities do not have up-front sales loads or ongoing expenses. Please note an MVA is based on a formula which responds positively or negatively to interest rate movements. See the What is a Market Value Adjustment (MVA)? section on page 4 for further details. A portion of the earnings from taxable alternative investments may be subject to lower maximum tax rates on capital gains and dividends, which may be lower than the federal income tax rate used to calculate the results. Please note state income taxes have not been assumed in the calculation as these vary. You should consider your personal investment horizon and income tax bracket, both current and anticipated, when making an investment decision as these may further impact the results of the comparison. 3

6 i What is a Market Value Adjustment (MVA)? Withdrawals from your annuity may be subject to an MVA. The MVA is based on a formula that responds to interest rate movements. It reflects the change in prevailing interest rates from the time you invest, until the time of withdrawal. For example, if interest rates have dropped since you first purchased your annuity, the amount you receive could actually be higher than the amount you expected to withdraw. If rates have risen, however, you may lose the interest earned and a portion of your purchase payment. Withdrawals made at the end of the term are not subject to an MVA. Access to your money when you need it The following withdrawals can be made without a withdrawal charge or an MVA: Amounts up to the interest credited over the previous 12 months, assuming no other withdrawals; or If greater, withdrawals needed to satisfy IRS required minimum distributions, as calculated by John Hancock. Please note that withdrawals other than those described above will be subject to a withdrawal charge, which will never exceed 7% and will decline on an annual basis (please refer to the accompanying fact card for details). Also please note that all interest withdrawals will reduce interest earnings due to the interruption of compounding. Regular income payment options including lifetime income You may choose to convert your investment into a guaranteed income stream. It can be paid to you over a specified period of time or as an income stream for life. Annuitization before the end of a guarantee period will be subject to an MVA. Flexibility allows for greater control Within the thirty days following the end of the guarantee period, you may request one of the following without an MVA or withdrawal charge: Move the money to any available guarantee period. Begin annuity payouts. Withdraw some or all of your account value. If no election is made within the thirty days following the end of the guarantee period, your money will be automatically moved to a one-year guarantee period, or if not available, the shortest term offered, to provide you with the time to choose what to do next. Withdrawal charges related to the new guarantee period may be applicable. See prospectus for details. 4

8 Additional benefits to cover a spectrum of needs Nursing Home Chronic Critical Illness Waiver 4 If you or your spouse are ever confined to a nursing home or diagnosed with a critical illness, you may be able to take out 100% of your money with no withdrawal charges or MVA. Family Protection The death benefit is equal to the amount accumulated in the contract. 100% of your account value can be paid in a lump sum to your beneficiary as a death benefit without an MVA or withdrawal charges (see your prospectus for full details). Also, the death benefit is paid to your beneficiaries, avoiding the potential delays and costs of probate court.
