Northstar Alliance is the Minnesota affiliate to the National Council on Problem Gambling. Perrault has over 25 years of experience developing and managing education and awareness initiatives for alcohol and drug addiction, mental health and gambling related organizations.

4 Gambling to risk money or anything of value on the outcome of something involving chance Questions to Consider How many of you consider yourself gamblers? How many of you have purchased tickets in church raffles? Played bingo or pull tabs at the VFW or Legion? Bet on football or basketball in the office pool? How many of you think of farming as a form of gambling? The stock market? Page 2

5 Gambling is a very visible, available and accepted form of recreation in Minnesota. MN State Lottery national Powerball, Gopher 5, scratch games 18 Native American casinos 3,000 charitable gambling outlets supporting everything from hockey clubs to community development (you know these) Horse Canterbury and Running Aces Card Canterbury and Running Aces What is Problem Gambling / Gambling Addiction? Problem gambling is gambling behavior which causes disruptions in any major area of life: psychological, physical, social or vocational. Potential rate of problem gamblers, 1%-3% of population in Minnesota, is 160,000 to 214,000 people. Fairly equal men and women, all age ranges, all socioeconomic and ethnic communities. No average gambling addict. Can result in social, emotional and financial devastation, including loss of relationships, residence, emotional or physical health, and career or educational opportunities. Page 3

6 Gambling Addiction Previously known as Pathological or Compulsive Gambling, now known as Disordered Gambling, it is a progressive addiction characterized by increasing preoccupation with gambling, a need to bet more money more frequently, restlessness or irritability when attempting to stop, chasing losses, and loss of control manifested by continuation of the gambling behavior in spite of mounting, serious, negative consequences. Gambling Addiction The American Psychiatric Association DSM-V: only non substance related addiction Brain studies, some done at the U of M, show extensive parallels in addictive processes similar to alcohol and drug addiction. Also relation to other behavioral issues that sometimes blur the lines obsessive compulsive disorders / hoarding / sex addiction, etc. Important step towards better insurance coverage for treatment, etc. Page 4

Gamble socially and not alone when you are tired, angry, lonely or under stress. Set an amount you are willing to play for recreation and stick to it. Set a time limit on how long to play and stick to it. Recognize you will probably lose. Don t let gambling become your only social activity. Don t borrow money to gamble, stay within your limits. Recognize when you start to feel out of control and seek help right away. Don t wait till it becomes a total disaster. Page 12

Increased frequency of gambling activity Increased amount of money gambled Gambling for longer periods of time than originally planned Bragging about wins but not talking about losses Pressuring others for money Lying about how money is spent Escaping to other excesses (alcohol, drugs, sleep, etc.) Denying there is a problem May include frequent absences from home and work, excessive phone use, withdrawal from family What Can I Do?
