1 UNIT 14: Developing a new business idea (LEVEL 1) Learning outcomes By completing this unit, candidates will develop knowledge, understanding and skills of a range of activities to support the development of a new business idea. This unit emphasises the marketing and research aspects of developing a new. Candidates will develop an initial idea by carrying out both field and desk research. This research will be used to inform and justify the main features of their idea. Candidates will then present the results of their research as both a written report and an oral presentation. 2 Unit 14 Developing a new business idea Assessment This unit is centre assessed and externally moderated. In order to achieve this unit, candidates must collate a portfolio of evidence showing that they can meet all the assessment objectives. Portfolios of work must be produced independently. They will need to be made available, together with witness statements and any other supporting documentation, to the OCR Visiting Moderator when required. Centres must confirm to OCR that the evidence produced by candidates is authentic. An OCR Centre Authentication Form is provided in the Centre Handbook and includes a declaration for assessors to sign. It is a requirement of the QCA Common Criteria for all Qualifications that proof of authentication is received. Guidance on assessment and evidence requirements Candidates will demonstrate an understanding of the basic characteristics of a new and some of the research techniques that can be used to develop an idea for a new. Candidates will also develop their ability to document their ideas in a formal report and present their ideas to an audience. A variety of business organisations and s should be used to provide relevant examples. Candidates should be taught the main principles of market research and should have an understanding of the benefits and drawbacks of different methods. They should be given opportunities to practise using these techniques, for example by practising questionnaire design and by participating in a focus group. Candidates should base their evidence on a new idea. This could be a new for an existing business, or it could be an idea for a new small business. Ideally the should be one in which they have some interest. However, candidates should be encouraged to avoid seeking to provide evidence that simply confirms and justifies their original choice of idea. They should be encouraged to see how research can help to refine and improve an original idea, or even cause it to be rejected completely. Candidates should use ICT to both present their written report and support their oral presentation. Candidates should use a standard report format. They should be shown examples of both effective and poor presentations. For Assessment Objective 1 candidates will be required to outline the main features of a new to be introduced by a business. For Assessment Objective 2 candidates will be required to undertake desk. The wider the range of their research, the greater the opportunity will be to achieve a higher grade.
