1 We can and we will GLEBE PRIMARY SCHOOL Curriculum Newsletter Nursery In Nursery, we have had a very busy term learning about Nursery Rhymes and Fairy Tales. We also learnt about Chinese New Year and with the help of Mrs Berriman, we even tried our hand at making Chinese Dumplings! We have been doing lots of work on storytelling and enjoyed making up our own stories, we also chose some of our favourites too, such as The Gruffalo. We had our own Gruffalo cave to play in and to re-tell the story. On World Book Day, the children loved coming into school dressed as their favourite characters. Some of the children were inspired by the fairy tales we have been reading such as Little Red Riding Hood, The Frog Prince and Goldilocks. We have continued to invite our parents to play and read every week and this has been very popular, the children have loved it! 1

2 Reception Reception have been full of surprises this term; they have continued to make great progress in both reading and writing. We have covered a variety of topics including Spies, Transport, Animals, Sports and Games, Superheroes, Fairy Tales and Healthy Eating. The children have remained extremely excited about visiting the school library once a week and have become very confident using 2Simple and Purple Mash on the computers in the IT Suite. We have also had great fun learning about Chinese New Year, by watching videos of the celebration, making cards and writing our numbers 1 10 in Chinese. This term we have also been very busy developing our new outdoor area, the children have really enjoyed creating a learning environment outside and have been full of great ideas! We were very excited to celebrate World Book Day with the rest of the school. We dressed up as our favourite characters and swapped books from home with one another. We also experienced our first art exhibition, the children all produced a wonderful piece of artwork, which was then framed and displayed at our in school art exhibition. It was amazing to see how proud the children were of their masterpieces. 2

3 Year 1 The Spring term has flown by in Year 1. We enjoyed seeing in the New Year by finding out all about Chinese New Year in RE. Fortune cookies were eaten and we discovered our zodiac animal. We have been looking at Measure in Maths and have enjoyed measuring all of our body parts! Our fingers are green from planting investigations in Science. I wonder which will grow first? In Computing we have even put our typing skills to good use; writing up instructions of how to plant a seed. Book week brought with it many opportunities to get our creative juices flowing. Writing our own stories, acting them out and creating masks for our fairy tale characters was a highlight! We became real life kings and queens during our History lessons with our own royal crowns. Year 1 also enjoyed our our trip to the Tower of London! What a great term 3

4 Year 2 Year 2 have been working very hard this term. We enjoyed learning about the medieval period in our History topic. Additionally, we had a fantastic time at Windsor Castle where we learnt more about knights and the Royal Family. We also enjoyed World book day where we read some more of The Worst Witch by Jill Murphy. Afterwards, we made our own witches and wizards hats based on the book. It was really fun dressing up as book characters and talking about which book our character was from. Can you guess which characters we are? In Science, we are learning about materials and their properties. We tested different materials to find out if they were transparent, waterproof or could float. Then we sorted them, based on our findings. The classroom ended up very wet as a result! 4

5 Year 3 Year 3 are really enjoying learning about the Ancient Egyptians this term. We have been learning about how the Ancient Egyptians lived and what they ate. This week we have been writing instructions for making a Mummy and finding out about the discovery of King Tutankhamun s tomb. In Art and DT lessons we have been busy making Egyptian wigs and collars ready for the Egyptian Day. In Science we have been learning about the different parts of a plant and their special functions and we even made a picture of a plant out of fruit and vegetables. World Book Day was a great success and all the children made their own books suitable for younger readers. They are planning to read them to the Nursery children. 5

6 Year 4 This term has been a very exciting one, with lots of performing going on! Our main focus has been on our play, Shakespeare Rocks, which has been the inspiration behind most of our subjects. We have been reading Macbeth in Literacy and we were lucky enough to go on a trip to The Globe theatre to experience a masterclass in Shakespearean acting. In Art, we have also been hit by the Shakespeare bug; refining our skills in drawing faces and then attempting to draw Shakespeare s portrait. We also managed to have a go at drawing some endangered animals for our Science topic on living things and their habitats, which we have really enjoyed studying. We have researched lots of threats to animals and their habitats, such as predators including humans. For History, we have discovered massive amounts of information on the Anglo-Saxons including how different their lives were to ours. To prepare ourselves for the upcoming holidays, we have looked at the Easter story in RE, acting out the Last Supper. We have also spent our PE lessons performing our own versions of the Haka! 6

7 Year 5 Year 5 have been very busy this Spring term and produced a huge volume of work to be proud of. Our theme for the term was centred on The Amazon Rainforest and this theme stretched across Literacy, Computing, Science, Art and of course Geography. In Literacy, the children wrote their own persuasive speeches to encourage others to save the Amazon Rainforest in Brazil. You can read their fabulous speeches on our Year 5 blog - In fact they were so successful that several celebrities logged on and commented, some of whom include: Greenpeace, The Rainforest Alliance, WWF, FSC, Simon Reeve and Chris Packham the BBC presenters, United for Wildlife (Prince William's charity), Andrew Whitworth the Conservation Biologist featured in BBC Wildlife Magazine, Lindsey Russell the Blue Peter presenter & the author of 'The Dangerous Book for Boys' Conn Iggulden. The children then got busy using the ipads to research how animals living within the Rainforest have adapted to this environment. They also produced some outstanding rainforest art, which was then put on display in our school art exhibition earlier this month. 7

8 The children have worked so hard, both individually and as a team, to create numerous posters which outline the cause, effect and possible solutions of deforestation. Take a look at some of the many photos of pupils work you re sure to be impressed! Year 6 This term, Year 6 have been having great fun with their DT project. The children have been designing and creating electrical circuit games. They started their projects by researching electrical games that are available to buy and started to think about how they worked. The children then decided that they would make a game that was similar to that of the game Operation. The next task was for the children to explore the circuit in the game operation and make their own prototypes. They used electrical components and the aim was to make a buzzer work. The children then designed the game that they wanted to create, thinking about their target audience. Finally, the children are making the games that they have designed in detail with electrical circuits. We can t wait to see the final products! Mrs Marks 8
