6 Chord Structure What is a scale? Individual notes played one after the other What is a chord? A set of 3 (sometimes 2) or more notes played together Last week we looked at chord structure for major and minor chords. We found that the formula for a major chord is 1 3 5, and the formula for a minor chord is 1 b3 5. This week we are going to look at how chords are grouped together

7 What is a key Every song has a key. The key of a song determines what notes are (most likely) in the song and what chords work well for the song. A song that is in the key of G major (usually just called key of G) will most likely use notes from the G major scale and chords made from the notes from the G major scale. The key of a song can be changed, usually to make it easier to play or sing. The relationship of the notes to each other are the same.

8 Building Chords Today we are going to build a 3 note chord from each note in the G major scale. Remember: a major chord is and a minor chord is 1 b3 5 Lets start with the G note and look at the 1 st, 3 rd, and 5 th notes. G, B and D. That makes is a G chord (G major) G A B C D E F# G M We will note that it is a major chord by putting an M under the G.

9 Building Chords Move the arrows over one note and build a 3 note chord based on A: A, C, and E G A B C D E F# G M m What chord is this? To find out, let s see how they fit in an A major scale? A B C C# D E F# G# A A is note 1, E is note 5, and C is the flat 3 rd. A C E makes an Am chord. We will note this with an m under the A.

15 Diminished Chord New Chord formula! Diminished chord formula: 1 b3 b5 Symbol for a diminished chord is the degree symbol ( o ) In my experience these chords are used very little in the music I play. Usually replaced with a major chord.
