1 Introduction Phono Bingo allows speech language pathologists the opportunity to target six common phonological processes: final consonant deletion, velar deviations, cluster reduction, stridency deletion, gliding, and syllable reduction, using the familiar BINGO game format without having to spend the time constructing their own bingo games or paying the high prices for the traditional pre-laminated articulation bingo games. All therapists need to do is photocopy the amount of game sheets they need and use the paper cutter to quickly cut out the game pieces and therapy is ready to begin. There isn t a need to worry about keeping track of bingo cards or game pieces because they can be discarded (or cards can be sent home for homework) after each therapy session. The students really enjoy using the bingo daubers to mark up their cards and you no longer need to worry about someone shaking the table and students losing their bingo chips. Many speech language pathologists target phonological processes while remediating their students speech production errors. Phono Bingo allows therapy sessions to be exciting as well as providing each student with multiple opportunities to practice targeted phonemes within common phonological processes. Each phonological process has multiple therapy targets (see Table of Contents), therefore Phono Bingo can be incorporated into any therapy program (even traditional articulation therapy). 2 How to Use Phono Bingo First, select the phonological process that is appropriate for your students needs, there are six phonological processes to choose from: final consonant deletion, velar deviations, cluster reduction, stridency deletion, gliding, and syllable reduction. Then, select the appropriate therapy target from within that phonological process. For example, if you chose velar deviations as the phonological process, you would then choose to practice one of the four therapy targets: initial /k/ and /g/, final /k/ and /g/, final ng, or mixed velars. Since there are five cards for each selected target, up to five players can play at a time. Each card is labeled Card A-E in the upper right hand corner and there is one sheet of game pieces per therapy target. Photocopy a different card for each student and one set of pieces. Use a paper cutter to cut out the pieces and place them in a container. To play: Traditional Bingo: Give one Phono Bingo card and one dauber per player. Everyone gets to mark out the Free Space in the middle of their card. Then, allow the students to take turns drawing game pieces from a container and saying the target word aloud. If the word appears on any of the students bingo cards they use the dauber to mark out that word. The first student to mark out five connecting pictures (diagonally, vertically, or horizontally) wins. You may extend the game by having the students continue to play until someone gets an X (corner to corner) or a picture frame (all the pictures around the edge of the card). Black Out Bingo: Same as Traditional Bingo except the first student to mark out all the words on their card wins. Auditory Bombardment Activity: Before playing, take out each of the bingo pieces and say the word to your students. Let the students just watch your mouth and listen to the correct productions. Always remember that the main objective is to have each student correctly produce the target word. If your students are proficient at the word level, have them say the word and then use it in a sentence. Use your imagination and clinical skills to make each therapy session motivating and productive! iv
