1 Lesson Plan: Preparing for a Field Trip to Heart of the City (Civic Center) Farmer s Market Grade Level: 1-5 Time: minutes SFUSD Standards: Link to Language Arts, Math, Science standards Nutrition Competency: 2 Making healthy food choices 10 Explore food-related careers Links to other curriculum/theme: Math (sorting and grouping list), Language Arts Goal(s): To prepare students for a field trip to a farmer s market. Objectives: Students will be able to name the parts of the plant we eat. Students will be able to define fruit and vegetable. Students will be able to ask a farmer one question about produce. Materials/Equipment: Posters: What is a Fruit?, What is a Vegetable?, Enjoy Fruits and Vegetables (USDA), Eat Your Plants -from TWIGS. Index cards with scavenger hunt items on one side and sample questions for farmers on the back. Worksheets: Top, Middle, Bottom or Parts of Plants book, or others within the lessons above. Books: Saturday Market about a Farmer s Market in Mexico (at civic center library) by Patricia Grossman (Author), Enrique O. Sanchez (Illustrator); Oliver s Fruit Salad, by Vivian French; The Ugly Vegetables, by Grace Lin. References/Resources: (K-3) Reading up The Food Guide Pyramid (UC Cooperative Extension), Versatile Vegetables -Lesson 3, and Fabulous Fruits -Lesson 4.

(4-5) Nutrition to Grow On (California Department of Education), Introduction to Nutrition and Gardening, p , 25-26, #3 A close look at plant parts. o o ( o Anticipatory Set: Have you ever been to a farmer s market? What kinds of foods do you think we can buy there? Statement of Objectives Our class will be going on a field trip to the farmer s market at Civic Center. We will go on a scavenger hunt there to find different fruits and vegetables to buy. Today we will prepare by learning more about fruits and vegetables. Procedure: Part 1 Teach one of the lessons from the References section above. Part 2 Give each student an index card that has a fruit/vegetable/plant part on one side and a list of the following questions on the other side. Tell them they will be given this card again at the market which will tell them the item they are to buy. Ask the students to read through the questions and pick one they would like to ask the farmer once they find their fruit or vegetable. Let each child practice aloud to a partner or to the class. a. How do you pick these? b. How do you know when the fruit/food will taste good? c. Where are the seeds in this fruit? d. How did you learn to grow this food? e. How does this food grow? Remind them to ask the farmer how much their produce costs and to say thank you.

3 Closure Remind students to turn in permission slips and to bring in $.50 to $1 for the trip. Assessment/Evaluation: Use worksheets listed or in lessons. Adaptations/Extensions: Several listed in lessons. Lesson Plan: A Trip to the Heart of the City (Civic Center)

4 Farmer s Market Grade Level: K- 5 Time: 2 hours SFUSD Standards: Link to Language Arts, Math, Science standards Nutrition Competency: 2 Making healthy food choices 10 Explore food-related careers Links to other curriculum/theme Math (sorting and grouping list), Language Arts Goal(s): To increase the likelihood that students will make healthy food choices by being exposed to a farmer s market. To have students understand the farm / food connection. For students to review fruits/vegetables/the parts of plants Objectives: Students will practice social skills by talking with a farmer. Students will understand the cycle of food from the seed to the plate. Students will learn about what a farmer does. Materials/Equipment: Index cards with scavenger hunt items and questions to ask farmers Bus passes First Aid kit Emergency cards Procedure: Step 1- Step 2- Step 3- Step 4- Step 5- Remind students/chaperones of group assignments, procedure & guidelines Depart for trip When you arrive at market, inform chaperones of meeting place/time Pass out scavenger hunt cards Groups tour the market (45 minutes to an hour)

5 Step 6- Either return to school or break for lunch, go to library/museum Extensions: In the afternoon after the trip or the next day, cook soup or salad with the produce the class bought.
