1 Sound quality assessment for products The University of Salford is undertaking research for the Department of Trade and Industry into product sound quality assessment. Sound quality relates to the aurally perceived suitability of a product. The long-term aim of this DTI programme is to develop a standard method for testing the sound quality of products. This will help to facilitate better design, improve product development, enable consumers to make a more informed choice and improve UK competitiveness. Part of the research is to determine what makes customers think that a product has a good sound quality. It will be determined by taking part in this listening test, which allows us to rate the customer s perception of the recorded sound of a product. All information will be kept in the strictest confidence: individuals will not be identifiable in any output from this work. If you have any problem with the questionnaire please, ask the person running the experiment. 1. Product: washing machine 2. Date: 3. Identification Tick or write an answer - Gender: Female [ ] male [ ] - Age: - Could you write how often would you use the product: ---- times [ ] day [ ] week [ ] month - Would you say in a normal environment, you could hear (please tick the relevant option): 1- A conversation without difficulties [ ] 2- A conversation with few difficulties which can be overcome [ ] 3- A conversation with great difficulties [ ] - If any, does sound labelling influence your purchase? N/A [ ] yes [ ] no [ ] (c) Acoustics Research Centre, University of Salford,
2 4. How does the test work? Please, first read this page up to page 4. If you have any questions regarding the list of words describing sounds or any other questions, please do not hesitate to ask the person running the test. Sounds of the products will be presented to you by using a CD player and a pair of headphones. You will have one questionnaire for each sound. You can start to complete the questionnaire while listening to the test and finish it during the 30 seconds break. You will then hear a message saying end of the 30 seconds which gives you the choice of either listening to the next sound or pressing Pause on the CD player to finish completing the questionnaire. w, four sounds are going to be presented to familiarise you with the test procedure. For each sound, please rate your thoughts by ticking on the scale or boxes presented below. w place the headphones on your ears and press play on the CD player for the first test.
