Introduction Freshwater Fishing Record: This project record book has been created specifically for members who are enrolled in freshwater fishing clubs. Keeping records is an important part of your 4-H project; this record book will help you set goals, keep track of inventory, and record accomplishments throughout your fishing project. Let s begin by setting project goals! Set three goals that you would like to accomplish by the end of this project. Don t be afraid to challenge yourself! My Goals for this project. How can I achieve them?

Tackle Box Challenge What do you need fill your tackle box with for freshwater fishing? Here are the basics *Replacement fishing line *Lures *Hooks *Bobbers *Weights *Pliers Tackle Box Inventory Type Use Qty Est. Value Estimated value of tackle box contents $

Freshwater Fishing Basics Now that we have outfitted our tackle box it is time to learn some of the basic principles of freshwater fishing. *3 basic knots every fisherman should know* Loop Knot A Loop Knot can be tied very easily under various circumstances, and attached to swivel and hook. It is a simple starting point for fishing knots. Clinch Knot One of the most basic knots for adding end tackle, such as hooks, lures, or swivels. Palomar Knot Palomar Knots provide another very simple knot for terminal tackle. It is considered to be the strongest knot for this application. It can be tied in the dark with a minimum of practice. 1. Pass the line through the eye of the hook, or swivel. 2. Double back. make five turns around the line. 3. Pass the end of the line through the first loop, above the eye, and then through the large loop. 4. Draw the knot into shape. 5. Slide the coils down tight against the eye. 1. Double about 10 inches of line, and pass through the eye. 2. Tie an Overhand Knot in the doubled line, letting the hook hang loose. Avoid twisting the lines. 3. Pull the end of loop down, passing it completely over the hook. 4. Pull both ends of the line to draw up the knot. (Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation)

Freshwater Fishing Basics Continued Your fishing pole: AKA Rod & Reel There are three types of reels that most fisherman use to catch fish *Spin cast reel (sometimes called a closed face reel) Typically inexpensive easy to use recommended for beginners *Spinning reel (sometimes called an open face reel) Price ranges from inexpensive to expensive requires some skill *Bait casting reel (used by skilled fishermen) Wide price range not meant to be used with light lures difficult to cast The most important thing is to get equipment that is best suited for the type of fishing that you plan on doing. DON'T EVER buy anything that is shrink-wrapped on a sheet of cardboard. I guarantee that you will be frustrated and disappointed before the first day is done. Rod & Reel Inventory Type of Rod & Reel Qty Est. Value Estimated value of Rod & Reel equipment $

Types of Lures There are many types of lures you can use for freshwater fishing. We will cover the basic types. *Jigs *Poppers *Spoons *Spinners *Crankbait *Plastic Worms *Plugs Plastic Worms are the most common type of fake bait to use. They come in many colors, sizes, and scents. Worms are a feel bait so it takes some time or your part to get used to them. As always practice makes perfect! How to Rig your Plastic Worm *3 Basic Rigs* *Wacky Rig - Tie a hook like Yamamoto's series 53 Crooked Hook to your main line. Use a long thin bait such as a Senko. Bend the bait in the middle so both tips touch. Then poke the hook straight through the bend in the middle. *Texas Rig -A bullet sinker is allowed to slide freely on the main line, with the hook tied directly to the main line. One issue is the sinker can slide far up the line away from the bait. This makes for inaccurate casts and imprecise presentations. For more control over an unpegged sinker, you can contain it on a short 12 to 18" leader tied to a swivel. This gives you the freedom of unpegged lure movement and you gain better control over the cast and presentation. *Carolina Rig - Most often used on open, relatively unobstructed bottom. Thread a 1/2 to 1 oz sinker onto your main line, followed by a bead that clicks when the sinker hammers against it. Then tie on a swivel, an 18"-24" inch leader line (but can be longer), and your hook. As with all the rigs we describe here, use lighter weights of Carolina rigs with light tackle, and heavier weights of Carolina rigs with heavier rods, reels and lines, a simple principle. Wacky Rig Texas Rig Carolina Rig

Catch and Release WHY RELEASE A FISH? A fish is too valuable a resource to be caught only once. A personal commitment to conservation adds fun to fishing. Size, season, and bag regulations make release mandatory. Stressed fish populations need your help to recover. The future of sport fishing is in your hands. Pass it on! HOW TO BEGIN Decide to release a fish as soon as it is hooked. Land your quarry quickly; don't play it to exhaustion. Set the hook immediately. Try to prevent a fish from swallowing the bait Work a fish out of deep water slowly, so it can adjust to the pressure change. Use hooks that are barbless or crimp the barbs on all hooks to give the fish a fighting chance and aid in the removal of the hook. Always keep release tools handy HANDLING YOUR CATCH Leave the fish in the water (if possible) and don't handle it. Use a tool to remove the hook or cut leader (use extreme care with a large, dangerous fish). Keep the fish from thrashing. Net your catch only if you cannot control it any other way. When you must handle a fish: Use wet hands, a wet glove, or a wet rag to hold the fish. Turn a fish on its back or cover its eyes with a wet towel to calm it. Don't put your fingers in the eyes or gills of your catch. Larger fish can be kept in the water by holding the leader with a glove or by slipping a release gaff through the lower jaw. Avoid removing mucous or scales. Get the fish back in the water as quickly as possible. Protect against personal injury by handling each species carefully and correctly. REMOVING THE HOOK Cut the leader close to the mouth if a fish has been hooked deeply or if the hook can't be removed quickly. Back the hook out the opposite way it went in. Use needle-nose pliers, hemostats, or a hookout to work the hook and protect your hands. For a larger fish in the water, slip a gaff around the leader and slide it down to the hook. Lift the gaff upward as the angler pulls downward on the leader. Do not jerk or pop a leader to break it. This damages vital organs and kills the fish. THE FINAL MOMENTS Place the fish in the water gently, supporting its mid-section and tail until it swims away. Resuscitate an exhausted fish by moving it back and forth or tow it alongside the boat to force water through its gills. Use a large hypodermic needle (or similar tool) to vent the expanded swim bladder on a fish taken from deep water (see graphics below). Watch your quarry to make sure it swims away. If it doesn't, recover the fish and try again.

Catch and Release Continued Venting trapped gases in a fish caught from great depth Use the largest hypodermic needle you can find (#10 or larger) and remove the plunger. Insert hypodermic needle at a 45 angle, under a scale, near the tip of the pectoral fin and squeeze gently. You will hear the trapped gases release. Also, make a needle clearing tool from a piece of stainless leader wire to clear any tissue, etc. from needle. Leave this tool in needle between uses. Sterilize the needle with iodine or alcohol between uses. Typical embolized condition after retrieval from depth Location of swim bladder Carefully insert needle under a scale at a 45 angle and gently squeeze. You will hear the trapped gas escape. If deflated stomach is still protruding from the mouth do not attempt to push stomach back into the mouth. This will generally take care of itself. REMEMBER, A RELEASED FISH HAS AN EXCELLENT CHANCE OF SURVIVAL WHEN HANDLED CAREFULLY AND CORRECTLY.

How to Measure Your Fish How to estimate a bass weight: Although it cannot be used to certify an official weight, use of the length and girth can give you a good estimate of a bass' weight. Scientists use a rather complex formula to attain the greatest accuracy. The equation is: Log (weight in grams)= x Log (total length in millimeters) x Log (girth in millimeters). A 22" long bass with a girth of 15" weighs about 6.0 pounds using this formula. Fortunately there are several other easy formulas that you can use, although they are not as accurate, they will give you a rough estimate. A quick, though very rough, estimate of torpedo shaped fish like young bass can be obtained by using: Total Length (in inches)-squared, times girth (in inches) divided by A 22" long bass with a girth of 15" weighs about 6.1 pounds using this formula. Another common option used for estimating bass weights is: Girth (in inches)-squared, times length (in inches) divided by 800. A 22" long bass with a girth of 15" weighs about 6.2 pounds using this formula. The total length is the maximum length of the fish, with the mouth closed and the tail fin pinched together. The best way to obtain this length is to push the fish's snout up against a vertical surface with the mouth closed and the fish laying along a tape measure, then pinch the tail fin closed and determine the total length. Do NOT pull a flexible tape measure along the curve of the fish. The photo to the right shows a bass on a measuring board with the mouth held shut. Prior to getting a final measurement the caudal (tail) fin will be pinched shut. "Girth" is best measured with a fabric ruler, such as tailors use. It can also be determined by drawing a string around the fish at its widest point marking where the string overlaps and then measuring the distance between the overlapping points on a conventional ruler. The measurement should be taken perpendicular to the length of the fish. This measurement is analogous to measuring the circumference of someone's waist. Knowing the girth is important when trying to certify a fish for a record, and provides useful information to biologists about the relative condition of a fish.

Ethical Angling The Ethical Angler Always: Protects all outdoor natural areas: Puts trash in garbage cans (never throws it in the water). Places old fishing line in monofilament recycling bins. Knows the current fishing regulations: Has learned how to properly measure and identify fish. Fishes by the rules! Protects the habitat of all plants and animals: leaves natural areas undisturbed. Practices catch and release techniques. Limit your take: do not take more than you need. Always practices safety: carries a first aid kit, sunglasses, a hat and sunscreen in your tackle box. When fishing from a boat make sure you wear a personal floatation device (PFD). Watch your hooks when fishing around people. Shows courtesy and respect towards other anglers: obeys speed zones and gives others fishing room.
