1 Dear Lakewood Families, Lakewood Elementary School s Read-a-Thon Fundraiser This year, the Lakewood PTA is excited to introduce a new fundraiser Read-a-thon Event! In keeping with our Scholastic Book Fair Medieval Theme, Sir-Read-A-Lot s Castle, we are pleased to introduce our. SIR-READ-A-LOT-A-THON!! This exciting fundraiser will not only encourage a love of reading, but at the same time provide a fun & easy way for our students to help raise for their school (without having to sell anything). The best part of our Read-A-Thon is that 100% of the collected will be used to benefit our School and our children! But the PTA cannot make this Event a success without the excitement, support & participation of every Lakewood family. We need your help! In this packet, we have included everything your child will need to participate: - Our official Read-a-thon Rules; - A Sponsorship Form (to record pledges); - Minute Recording Sheet (for students to complete & parents to initia); and - A list of incentives & prizes to be won. We will be kicking off our Read-A-Thon on Tuesday, October 7 th with a special assembly for the entire school. On Wednesday, October 8 th, your child should begin securing pledges from family and friends. Each sponsor will have the option to pledge a certain amount of for every minute your child reads, or pledge a flat fee to support the student, regardless of how many minutes he/she reads. s, please assist your child in soliciting pledges. Friends, family, neighbors, and co-workers often make the best sponsors. After obtaining pledges, your child should set a "reading goal" for himself/herself. We decided to count minutes of reading (instead of books or pages) in order to be fair to all levels of readers. Please go over the Official Rules with your child so that he/she knows which reading minutes count, and which ones do not. The official reading period for the event begins on Monday, October 20 th, and goes through November 7 th. Every day during the Period, your child should record how many minutes he/she has read (using the attached Minute Recording Sheet). At the end of each day, your child will ask you to verify his/her reading time for that day. Please do so by signing your initials next to your child's recorded time. It is essential that you verify your child s recording sheet, since sheets turned in without verification will NOT count towards the child s total reading minutes. During the official reading period, encourage your child to read as much as possible, and remind them that prizes will be awarded to individual students and classes for most minutes read and the most raised. Throughout the period, students can bring their Recording sheets to Mrs. McCaffrey in the Media Center to receive incentive prizes. After the Official Period ends, your child will tally up the minutes read, collect their pledge from their sponsors, and turn in the collected to school NO LATER THAN Friday, November 14. Please ensure that your child turns in his/her Sponsorship Form & Minute Recording Sheet along with the collected. Please place all forms, cash & checks in a sealed envelope, and mark it with your child s name, grade & teacher. The sealed envelope should be turned in to your child s homeroom teacher. Please note that forms and collected after November 14 th will be accepted, but will not be counted towards the individual and class prizes. We thank you in advance for your support! 4 OFFICIAL RULES Start reading and recording your minutes on Monday, October 20, Use your Minute Recording Sheet to keep track of how many minutes you read each day. It is important to get your parents initials every day. You can bring your Minute Recording Sheet to media room the Media Center and redeem your minutes for eligible prizes. Use your Sponsorship Form to keep track of your sponsors and how much they have pledged to donate. What Counts 1. before and after school hours 2. aloud to others - parents, siblings, pets, neighbors, stuffed animals, etc. 3. assigned homework - daily reading or book report counts as long as it is done after or before school. 4. anything in any language. 5. on the bus, car, in bed/bathroom 6. instead of watching TV or playing video games 7. Being read to by others COUNTS What does not count 1. before or after the official Read-A- Thon Period does not count. You can begin counting reading time on October 20 th through the final day, November 7 th. 2. during school hours/class time does not count BE PRECISE guessing, estimating, or rounding of minutes is NOT allowed. Please look at the clock or use a stopwatch to clock your minutes. CHARACTER COUNTS - be honest with your minutes so that it will be fair and fun for everyone. Remember that every day, you must ask a parent or guardian to initial your reading time on the Minute Recording Sheet. READ WITHIN THE OFFICIAL READING PERIOD The Official Period runs from October 20 th through November 7 th. Any reading done before or after that period will NOT count toward your total. TURN IN YOUR FORMS & COLLECTED PLEDGE MONEY ON TIME In a sealed envelope, please return to your child s teacher: the Minute Recording Sheet, Sponsorship Form, and all collected (cash & checks) NO LATER THAN November 14 th! 5 INCENTIVES & PRIZES During the Official reading period, your child can redeem minutes read for the following incentive prizes: Minutes read (K-1/2-3/4-5) Prizes 45/60/90 Bookmark 90/120/180 "I love " Tattoo 135/180/240 Pencil 180/240/300 Button Pin At the conclusion of the Event, the following prizes will be awarded: Prizes For Most Minutes Read The Top Readers (one boy & one girl) in every classroom will receive a special Certificate. The Top Reader per Grade will win a Digital Timer Bookmark. Prize for Top Pledge or: The student who raises and collects the most in pledges will take home a gigantic stuffed Bear, the mascot of our read-a-thon Event. Sir-Read-A-Lot! Classroom Prizes: The class in each grade level that reads the most cumulative minutes will win a class party. Each winning grade-level class will also be entered into a raffle to win one $50 gift card for their teacher to spend on their classroom. *Incentives & prizes are subject to change without notice
