2 Dear CKSBU Counselor, Congratulations! You ve decided to take part in something incredible. We re excited to have you on board and can t wait to make the magic happen with you this summer. By accepting your counselor position, you ve agreed to a required fundraising goal of $500. This amount will make it possible for one camper to attend camp 100% free of cost to their parents. We realize that this fundraising goal may seem like a daunting task at first, but we are here to help! This packet has lots of tips to get you started. We ll be here throughout the semester to provide you with resources and help to reach your goal. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to contact us at stonybrook.development@campkesem.org or at (631) DEADLINES: To help you stay on track with your fundraising, we have established checkpoints throughout the semester. First Check In ($250+): March 25th Second Check In ($400+): April 15th Third Check In ($500+): May 6 th Please do not forget these deadlines! 3 Making a Classy Page One of the easiest ways to fundraise is on Classy, a website where friends, family, and anyone interested can support you and CKSB by donating any amount through your page. 1. Go to Stony Brook University- Camp Kesem: 2. Click Donate on the left-hand side of the page: 3. Click: 4. Click: 5. Sign up with Facebook or with your address! 6. You re on Classy! ~Feel free to personalize your message, fundraising goal, and automated thank-you s~ 3
4 Share it on Facebook! General Tips on Individual Fundraising 1) Be Confident in Your Cause Never apologize when asking for money. Don t begin letters or Facebook posts with I hate to ask for money, but. You are raising money for a fantastic cause, so be confident and encourage people to help you out. When people see that you are passionate and motivated, they will be encouraged to donate. 2) Use Your Classy Page IT IS REQUIRED THAT ALL COUNSELORS HAVE A CLASSY PAGE, as it is the quickest and most convenient way for someone to donate. Classy is the ONLY online fundraising page that you can use to fundraise for CKSBU. An important thing to note is that people visiting your page can see your fundraising progress. Never post or send someone to a fundraising page that has no donations. The first donation should always be your own. Whether you can give $10, $20, or $50, people will see that you care about your cause enough to donate your own money, and that will make them excited to give. 3) Use Social Media It s a great idea to send personal messages or letters to people you want to reach directly, but you never know how many people you may reach by posting on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc. Doing a social media push will draw attention and get people hyped. It will also spread awareness for our cause, regardless of whether or not people donate. Share the link to your personal Classy page, along with Camp Kesem videos, pictures, and testimonials from parents, campers, and counselors. 4) Have a Creative Fundraising Platform Fundraising is always more successful when you can make it fun. Successful fundraisers often include a feeling of exclusivity or friendly competition. Say the first ten people who donate will be able to give you a dare. Challenge friends to match other friends donations. Some people pledge to do something crazy like dye or donate their hair if they raise a certain amount of money. See the list on page 4 for a list of creative fundraising ideas. Please remember that all ideas must e appropriate as we represent a professional organization. If you are uncertain about an idea, please contact the Development Coordinators immediately. 4
5 Creative Fundraising Ideas Here are some fundraisers that have worked for people in the past. Have fun with it! Feel free to come up with your own ideas, but make sure they are appropriate! 1. Friends who donate $25 can make you watch a movie of their choice (the worse the movie, the better). 2. Friends who donate $10 can give you a small dare that you can t turn down. 3. Pledge to dye or donate your hair if you reach your fundraising goal by the end of the day. 4. Pledge to run a mile for every $10 raised. 5. Pledge to run a marathon if you reach your fundraising goal by the end of the day. 6. Allow friends who donate $50 to create an outfit for you to go to class in, or to suggest a hair cut that you have to get. 7. Allow friends who donate $25 to suggest a strange new food for you to try. 8. Bake cookies or brownies to sell in your halls, classes, or to your families! Make sure you explain what you re raising money for. 5
6 Five Easy Steps to Raising $500 and Beyond! 1. Donate to yourself. It all begins with you! $50 2. Ask 4 family members for $50 each $ Ask 10 friends (and other family members) to donate $15 each $ Ask your boss for a company contribution of $50 $50 5. Ask 5 neighbors to donate $10 each $50 Total: $ Ask 5 local businesses you frequent to donate $25 each $ Ask 5 members from a club/organization to donate $10 each $50 8. Host a community fundraising event (bake sale, car wash, etc.) $ Ask your doctor, professor, etc. to donate $25 each $125 Total: $1,000 Use social media like Facebook, Twitter, etc. Send a blast and share what you are doing. Ask 25 friends for $20! It s that easy $500 more in fundraising. Try choosing a different group of 20 friends to target each week! Total: $1,500 6
7 Other Ways to Fundraise: LETTER WRITING PARTY: Letter Writing Parties allow CKSBU members to write personal letters to family, friends, or anyone else who might be interested in donating to CKSBU. Letters also include our Classy page link (for online donations) and a return envelope with a quick form (for cash and/or check donations). Our first letter writing party date will be announced soon! CONTACTING BUSINESSES: You may wish to contact a local business, especially if you work there or know the manager/owner about supporting our organization. Remember we are a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and all donations are tax deductible. In Kind Donations such as services, products, or gift cards will also be counted towards your fundraising goal on a case-to-case basis. If you wish to contact a local business, please ask the Development Coordinators for access to one of our Sponsorship Packets. HELPING OUT DEVELOPMENT: Throughout the semester, there will be many opportunities to work on your fundraising goal through Development events. o Bake Sales o Profit Share Participation o Date Auction: Stay tuned for more information! o Selling CKSBU T-shirts and Crewnecks: $15 per shirt also buys a shirt for a camper! $10 of this will go towards your fundraising goal. We can loan any counselor 2 shirts at a time for a two-week period. After this period, we expect either money or the shirts back. Crewnecks are $20. o Kesem Week: This semester we will hold a Kesem week that focuses on counselor fundraising. There will be bake sales, Stuff-the-Cup, and other events. Stay tuned for more information! 7
8 FUNDRAISING GOAL INCENTIVES If you re looking for some motivation to reach your $500 fundraising goal, we ve introduced some friendly competition! Below is a list of incentives that YOU could have the chance to win! INDIVIDUAL INCENTIVES FASTEST FUNDRAISER This award will be given to the person who raises their $500 fundraising goal the quickest. REWARD: CKSBU Crewneck, Free Dinner with the Development Coordinators, and Award Certificate. BIG BUCKS FUNDRAISER This award will be given to the person who raises the most money towards camp. REWARD: CKSBU Crewneck, Baked Goods from the Development Coordinators, & Award Certificate. MOST SUPPORTED FUNDRAISER This award will be given to the person who has the greatest amount of donors donating in their name. (This could mean that each person is only donating $10 at a time, but it means that we are spreading the word about Kesem!) REWARD: Camp Survival Kit, Karl Tattoos, & Award Certificate. GROUP INCENTIVES FASTEST UNIT These awards will be given to the Unit that collectively reaches their individual goals the quieckest. REWARD: Pizza/Movie Party & Award Certificates. BUCKET O MONEY UNIT This award will be given to the Unit that collectively raises the most money (a combination of their individual goals) towards camp. REWARD: Ice Cream Social & Award Certificates.
