Kevin wants to find out which golf ball goes the farthest. He tests Titleist and Strata golf balls. He uses a swing machine to hit the golf balls. He uses two different clubs a 5-iron and a 5-wood. He determined that Titleist was the best ball to use with a 5-wood and to use Strata golf balls with a 5-iron. 13. What piece of equipment measure density? 14. 3 17. Lindsay planted two types of grass seed Scott s and Greener Grass. In a 4 inch clay pot, she put in a cup of miracle grow in the bottom then placed 20 Scott s grass seeds on top of it. Next she placed ¼ cup of Miracle grow soil on top of the Scott s grass seeds. Then she repeated the same process in a new 4 inch clay pot but with 20 Greener Grass seeds. She then places them next together on her screened in front porch. Everyday at 8:00 AM and 8:00 PM she waters each pot with 1 tablespoon of water from her faucet. Then at 8:10 PM she measures with a ruler the tallest grass blade in each clay pot and records the result. What is the independent variable? What is the dependent variable? What are the controls in this experiment? What is the sample size? 18. The teacher lays out safety goggles for the students to wear for their lab. Roger sees the goggles on the lab table but the directions in the lab did not say to put on the goggles. He looks around and the teacher has his goggles on along with most of the students. The lab requires mixing chemicals that can irritate the eyes and nose. What do you think Roger should do follow the lab instructions and not put on the goggles or the general lab rules and put on the safety goggles? Why? Golden 3

4 19. On September 03, 2011 four scientists came together and asked themselves whether or not adding mass would increase or decrease the distance traveled by a straw rocket. After thinking about the problem they formulated a hypothesis and then designed an experiment. The scientists decided that they would gradually add mass to 5 straw rockets and record the results. They decided to make sure that each rocket was identical and would have only 3 fins. The scientists also decided to launch the rockets inside a controlled environment as to prevent any changes in wind direction or strength. They used the Super Duper Big Bad Mamma Jamma rocket launcher to launch all of the rockets. Below is the data they collected for the experiment.
