1 Lou Hoover Melissa Akers January 21, 2011
2 Lou Hoover, born on March 19, 1874, would be First Lady to the 31 st President of the United Sates. Hoover was not raised in the traditional way for a woman; instead, she was raised to love nature and physical exercise, as well as keeping her feminine side. She became highly educated, eventually being fluent in five different languages. Her upbringing inspired her to lead a life in which she encouraged the education and equality of women, and in which she did all that she could to help her community. However, Hoover did not just help the public during her time as First Lady. Instead, she had spent her entire life devoting her time and money to bettering the lives of others. Before becoming First Lady, Hoover was involved in countless organizations, but perhaps one of her greatest contributions was in the creation of the Girl Scouts. The ideals that the Girl Scout organization was trying to promote fit perfectly with Hoover s ideals and she became National Commissioner for the organization. She also eventually held the roles of Vice President and later President of the Girl Scouts, founding troops in Washington, DC, and Palo Alto, California. Hoover became the troop leader of the Washington branch, and both troops included both African-American girls and white girls. Hoover also helped to create a Girl Scout House where adult troop leaders could be trained. Soon after Hoover became married, she and her husband were living in China. After they had been there one year, the Boxer Rebellion broke out. In this rebellion, foreigners were being murdered by native Chinese people. During this time, Hoover helped to build protective barricades and she personally helped to care for those who were wounded. She also helped to care for local herds of cows to provide dairy products for endangered children.
3 In addition to helping the Girl Scouts and caring for people in the Boxer Rebellion, Hoover helped provide aide for those affected by World War I. She was involved in the American Women's War Relief Fund and Hospital which provided financial aid to families, and she was also a part of the Society of American Women in London which provided food and shelter for people who were unable to return home. When Herbert Hoover was appointed to the US Food Administration, Mrs. Hoover joined the Administration s Women s Committee. There she gave speeches demonstrating to women the simple measures they could take to preserve food. She even provided recipes, and she encouraged people to grow some of their food on their own property. Once Hoover was named President, Mrs. Hoover did less in public, for she feared the media and was often the target of criticism by those who disagreed with her husband. However, she did not retire from the public entirely. Mrs. Hoover gave many public speeches and radio speeches. Many of her speeches encouraged the equality of men and women, and she also told men that they too should be involved in the housekeeping. She declared it socially acceptable for pregnant women to be seen in public. Mrs. Hoover also encouraged the equality of Blacks and Native Americans, even personally inviting important Black and Native American people to the White House. When the Great Depression hit, Mrs. Hoover was very careful not to comment on some of her husband s programs to the media. However, she did arrange some benefit concerts. Mrs. Hoover, always believing in the education of women, paid in full the college tuition of many young women. She also secretly paid the debts of some people, and sent requests she received from people to organizations that she knew could help them. She also encouraged the Girl Scouts to volunteer in their neighborhoods.
4 After her husband s term as President ended, Hoover decided to merge back into community life. She once again joined many organizations, including the League of Women Voters. She resumed her work with the Girl Scouts and helped with their fundraising. She helped to get better training for physical education teachers, and when World War II broke out, she helped to raise relief funds for injured soldiers and their families. She also encouraged the Girl Scouts to collect materials that could be used to make weapons, and she told them to grow produce at home in Victory Gardens. In 1944, Hoover died suddenly of a heart attack. After her death, Mr. Hoover found many papers documenting the money she had donated to anonymous Americans, and found countless un-cashed checks that people had sent to repay her. Mrs. Hoover s selfless care for the public, both American and foreigners, distinguished her as an outstanding American, and a wonderful First Lady. Works Cited "Lou Hoover Biography."
