1 Unit descriptions Year 1 Mandarin Overview Term Topic: The Very Hungry Caterpillar 好饿的 This term, Year 1 students will learn about bugs minibeast and relevant describing words. By the end of the term, students will be able to introduce and describe caterpillars and butterflies using a range of related vocabulary. Students will explore how to express meaning in Chinese using stories about minibeasts, online activities, flipcharts, games, origami, songs and role plays. Their prior knowledge and language acquisition in the new topic will be enhanced through Mandarin version of the story The Very Hungry Caterpillar. Students will be able to revise numbers, days of the week, fruits, describing words and gradually develop the skill of applying these words, together with new vocabulary in the context of caterpillar s life cycle and weekly diary. At the end of the term, students are expected to present information about caterpillars using a variety of sentence structures. Advanced learners are challenged to a higher level of competency of the skills required in the key learning areas e.g. listening, speaking, character recognition and writing. These students are strongly encouraged to attempt tasks which involve more advanced words and phrases. They will be expected to engage in communicative activities which include longer texts and worksheets designed to promote a higher degree of character recognition and writing. Learning outcomes Students are able to: explain the life cycle of a butterfly present information on caterpillars and butterflies using a variety of sentence structures. compose a weekly diary for a caterpillar using taught language use their learnt knowledge to appreciate stories/songs/rhymes about caterpillar or butterfly. Assessment Assessment will be carried out before the end of week 6 on the topic The Very Hungry Caterpillar. It will include the following: Listening and understanding the spoken word Reading and pronouncing the vocabulary Being able to construct sentences using taught words
