Home remedies are part of everyone s culture. Commonly used home remedies will be presented using case histories of patients from Appalachia as well as with patients with an Hispanic background who have recently migrated to NE Tennessee. Home remedies will be compared and contrasted to acceptable medical standards. The safety and efficacy of these remedies will be discussed.
Objectives: 1. To learn about the use of home remedies commonly used in Central Appalachia. 2. To learn of home remedies used by the Hispanic population of NE Tennessee who are migrant farm workers or have recently immigrated to this region 3. To learn about the safety and efficacy of commonly used home remedies
The Appalachian Spirit: A Look Back
First Let s Clear Something Up How in the world do you pronounce Appalachia?? 1. Appa-LAY-shuh 2. Appa-LATCH-uh &feature=youtu.be
The Trail-Blazers Early 1700s Scottish and English Immigrants moved West into the mountains to escape oppression of Quaker and other religious leaders. Independent and self-sufficient. Constantly attacked by some Native-American Tribes, but coexisted with sympathetic tribes and learned how to be mountain people. Earned the Appalachian People a reputation of being rugged and self-sufficient
Appalachia Personified: Daniel Boone Hunter and Surveyor instrumental in settlement of Kentucky and Tennessee. The Pioneer uniform = coonskin cap, buckskin clothing, muzzleloader rifle Created romantic image of Appalachian people as heroic and dependable
In case anyone was interested
1700s - American Revolution Overmountain Men in 1770s defied British order to move out of Western Appalachian Mountains and created FIRST independent American constitutional government named Watauga Association These famous people settled in modern-day Elizabethton, Kingsport, and Greeneville, TN. Took part in many battles against the British and Native American tribes employed by the crown Single-handedly pushed the British out of the North Carolina Mountains
1800s- Davy Crockett King of the Wild Frontier Native of Lawrence County, TN. Hunter, sharpshooter, storyteller, military leader, politician, champion of the common man Known for his survival and marksmanship skills Remembered best for his role in defending the Alamo, in which Crockett and his men showed incredible bravery and stunning accuracy with a rifle
1860s - Civil War: Caught in the Middle Much of Appalachian region split between Pro-Slavery Democrats and Pro- Abolition Republicans Consequently, many battles took place in Appalachian areas of Tennessee, Kentucky, North Carolina, Virginia. Soldiers from both sides caused massive destruction by raiding and pillaging Appalachian homes. Inhabitants of Appalachia suspicious and resentful of government authority still to this day
Wounds of War - Radical Stereotyping by Northern Media Appalachia disputed Whiskey Tax in 1870s as well as 1920s Prohibition = Moonshiners and Bootleggers Northern media criticized Appalachian People for needing their whiskey Destabilization after the Civil war led to a power-struggle between very affluent families in the Southern Region (Hatfields and McCoys in Kentucky). Northern Media painted such armed conflicts as natural products of profound ignorance, poverty, isolation, and incest, even though conflicts were usually between well-todo local elites.
1910s - Sgt York: Hick to Hero Born in Pall Mall, TN. Attended school for only 9 months, because his father needed him to help work the farm and hunt to feed the family Worked in logging and railroad construction to support mother and younger siblings when father died in Drafted into army during World War 1 at the age of 29. Received the Medal of Honor for singlehandedly defeating 30 German machine gun nests and capturing over 130 prisoners in a single battle. ch?v=a-5goynfed0 3:50
Appalachia Today Many jobs lost due to mechanization of mining and textile industries. Very few logging firms exist due to being put out of business by creation of national forests. Appalachian poverty and lack of resources not currently an area of interest for federal government or mass media However, people of Appalachia still hold strong to a rich history defined by self-sufficiency, hard-work, marksmanship, and a will to fight for the common man. And we are the most creative bunch of folks you will ever meet!

Appalachian Home Remedies
White Raisins Soaked in Gin Use: Joint pain, especially rheumatoid arthritis How: Soak white raisins in gin until the raisins plump up. Consume exactly 9 every day (not 8 and not 10!) for relief of joint pain. Or purchase commercially from DrunkenRaisins.com! Raisins: Contain proanthocyanidins, which are thought to help fight infection and reduce inflammation, and resveratrol, a powerful antioxidant Gin: juniper berries, which flavor gin, have anti-inflammatory properties
Bark or Root of the Sassafras Tree Claim Sassafras Tea is made by boiling the bark or roots Used as a tonic and/or pain relief Leaves and bark have a slightly citrus scent Roots have a strong root-beer odor Science Medicinal use of sassafras has declined because of the component Safrole which the FDA has declared as a carcinogen
Ginseng Claim: Ginseng root, in dried form is used as an aphrodisiac or stimulant, but there are no studies to date proving the effectiveness of ginseng for treating any disease.
Beware of Poachers! In 2012, the average price for a pound of wild ginseng was $580 Because of the resale value of ginseng, poaching is both illegal, and very common.
Home Remedies Involving Alcohol A hot alcoholic beverage will help treat a cold Reality: The alcohol does actually serve to dilate blood vessels which assists mucus membranes in fighting infection. However, too much alcohol will have a diuretic effect, so proceed with caution. Drinking a shot of alcohol to treat insomnia Reality: While alcohol may put you to sleep quickly, it leads to disruptive sleep that is not restful Hair of the Dog - use a small amount of alcohol to treat a hangover Reality 1: Hangover symptoms are the manifestation of mild alcohol withdrawal, so having another drink abates these symptoms. Reality 2: Having another drink saturates alcohol dehydrogenase enzymes, slowing the metabolism of methanol.
Dog Licking Wounds to Speed up Healing Use: Simply allow your favorite canine to lick your wound. This practice dates back as far as Ancient Egypt where dog saliva was viewed as having extraordinary healing properties. Reality: 1990 study conducted by Univ of California, Davis found that dog saliva was significantly bactericidal against E. coli and Strep canis. Additionally, a dog s tongue acts to speed up healing by clearing away dead tissue. WARNING: Dog bites have been linked to Pasteurella infections that may lead to cellulitis Conclusion: Dog saliva does merit some antibacterial properties, but the risk of possible Pasteurella infection may outweigh any benefit.
Vinegar and You - A Match Made in Heaven! Squirt a 50/50 solution of vinegar and water in your ear to remove wax and treat infection Reality: The squirting of the solution helps to cleanse the ear of debris and bacteria. The acidity of the vinegar acts as a disinfectant. Add a Tablespoon of Apple Cider Vinegar to 5 oz of water before a carb-heavy meal to lower postprandial glycemia Reality: Recent studies have shown that this practice significantly decreases post-prandial glycemia and increases insulin response in insulin-resistant individuals (not as effective for chronic type 2 diabetes) Add 2 Cups of Apple Cider Vinegar to a bath to relieve sunburns Reality: The properties of Apple Cider Vinegar have been shown to balance the ph of the skin, promoting analgesia as well as wound healing
Tobacco Poultice Topical pain and inflammation relief Local Vasoconstriction Used for: Bee stings Splinters Sprains, strains, etc Use is likely connected to prevalence of tobacco farming In 1997, there were 26,000 acres of tobacco growing in East Tennessee, in 2009 this number was down to 4,000
Hispanic Home Remedies Before Obamacare, there was Abuelacare

Spirituality and Grief As observed in Rural Appalachia
For this child I prayed; and the Lord hath given me my petition which I asked of him: Therefore also I have lent him to the lord. - 1 Samuel 1:27-28
Spirituality and Bereavement: Common Themes The pain of this tragedy can be lessened by the knowledge that this child has been welcomed by his Heavenly Father Those who hope to see this child again can only do so through Christ; let his ministry be in leading those who knew him to God in his death. The child will never be corrupted by this world, he will always be pure and without sin. This child is praying for his family now, that they not let their grief make them bitter or angry, but instead that they draw closer to each other in God. This family is surrounded not only by their geographic community, but by their community in Christ.
A common theme... I know where this child is. And I know how to get there. Through Jesus Christ.
Guided Meditation
Song Great is thy faithfulness, O God my Father; There is no shadow of turning with thee; Thou changest not, thy compassions, they fail not; As thou hast been thou forever wilt be. Great is thy faithfulness! Great is thy faithfulness! Morning by morning new mercies I see; All I have needed thy hand hath provided. Great is thy faithfulness, Lord unto me!
