1 Measurement Units and Tools Strand B: Measurement Benchmark MA.B.1.1.1: The student uses and describes basic measurement concepts including length, weight, digital and analog time, temperature, and capacity. Grade Level Expectations: The student: knows how to communicate measurement concepts. Overview: The students will engage in an activity that will give them the experience of matching measurement tools to measurement units. This activity will also provide them with an opportunity to become proficient in using measurement tools and applying measurement techniques. In addition, the students will understand measurable attributes of objects and the units used. Materials: Measurement Everywhere Worksheet Measurement Categories Blackline Master Customary Units of Measure and Tools Blackline Master Pictures of Measurement Tools Standard Tools of Measurement Length - ruler, measuring tape, meter/yard stick Weight/Mass - personal scale, kitchen scale, pan balance, spring scale Time - clock (digital/analog), calendar, stopwatch Temperature thermometer (Fahrenheit/Celsius) Capacity teaspoon, tablespoon, cups, pints, quarts, liter, gallon Nonstandard Tools cubit, palm, hand span, arm span paper clips, straws, linker cubes, yarn, etc. Division of Mathematics and Science Education Measuring Units and Tools Page 1 of 10

The teacher and students should brainstorm and record information using KWL with students about units of measure used around the world (nonstandard and standard). 2. Introduce the different categories of measurement, i.e., length, weight, time, temperature, and capacity to create a word web. Measurement Temperature Time Length Capacity Weight/Mass Division of Mathematics and Science Education Measuring Units and Tools Page 2 of 10
3 3. Use the pictures depicting measurement tools and the vocabulary words expressing different levels of measurement provided. Complete the web to illustrate and define all categories and corresponding units of measurement. 4. Explain units of measurement, how and when they are used e.g., An inch is a customary unit for measuring short lengths. A centimeter is a metric unit for measuring short lengths. A foot is a customary unit for measuring longer lengths. A mile is a customary unit for measuring long distances (length). A cup is a customary unit for measuring how much an object holds. Literature Connection: Measuring Penny by Loreen Leedy (ISBN: ) Assessment: Distribute the Measurement Everywhere worksheet to students. Extension: Have students create a mobile using the measurement pictures and measurement units. Division of Mathematics and Science Education Measuring Units and Tools Page 3 of 10
