1 TEST B PART 1 Listening Listen to the following monologues and dialogues and choose one correct option a, b, c, or d. Mark your answer sheet as shown in the example. Do not write on the test booklet, please. You will hear each recording twice. Task 1 A message on an answer phone It s me. I m on the train. Can you do me a favor? I ve left an important phone number in my study on the desk. Can you call me back and tell me what it is? Thank you. Kiss the baby for me. Task 2 A couple talking Kate: Tom, could you take the ironing board through to the sitting room? Tom: Why? The movie is just about to start. Kate: I m going to do the ironing while I m watching TV. Tom: But you must be tired. Why don t you leave it till tomorrow and I ll help you? Kate: Yes, you are right, I am very tired, but tomorrow I need to clean the windows. Tom: I know I m usually not very good at doing the housework, but starting tomorrow, I m going to change. I ll do the ironing tomorrow. Kate: Is that a promise? Tom: Yes, it is. Kate: Well, in that case, let s go and watch TV together! Task 3 A family conversation Patricia: Good morning, Richard. Let s all have a big Sunday breakfast! Richard: Not for me. I m going to clear the snow away from the garden path. Patricia: Why now? There wasn t that much snow last night Richard: You don t believe me, darling? Come and have a look. Patricia: Oh dear, you re right there is a lot of snow! Well, I ll wake up Jane and we ll help you. Richard: Let her sleep. She looked tired last night. Make a good vanilla cake for breakfast and I ll go to the garden to earn it! Patricia: All right, then. Task 4 A student talking about his school Male: I m having a wonderful time at university. The social life is fantastic and you don t have to work very hard. I go to parties nearly every night and when there isn t a party, I spend the evening playing PC games. That means I usually go to bed pretty late but it s O.K. because I don t have to get up early in the mornings. There are lectures everyday but I think most of them are a waste of time, so I don t bother to go.

2 Task 5 At work Female: Mr. Parker, could I talk to you for a minute? Male: Sure. What's on your mind? Female: I need to change my work schedule from the late shift to the early shift. Male: Why? Female: I want to take some classes in the evening. Male: Well, I'll see what I can do. Female: When will you know? Male: Come to see me on Monday afternoon. Female: OK. Thank you, Mr. Parker. Task 6 From a conversation Man: OK, I ve got two at fifty dollars and one at twenty dollars. So that s 150 dollars altogether. Man: Err no, that s 120. Right, could you sign them here please? Man: Here? Yes, OK, there you are. Thank you. Can I see your passport please? Man: Sure, here it is. OK, so that s 94 pound 45. How do you want the money? Task 7 A part of a conversation then at the end of Market Street you come to Sydney Street. Turn right and follow that street round a bend past Marks and Spencer s and Boots and eventually it leads into St Andrew Street. Go down there, leaving the pedestrian precinct and keep walking and soon you ll see the University Arms Hotel on your left. Task 8 You re not really going to fill that in, are you? Well, I think it s waste of time. Man: It may be, but it doesn t cost anything, look. Anyway, as you re here you can help me. Right, now the first bits are name and address and so on. Right, now what about my appearance and personality? How would you describe me? Sexy? Attractive? Sexy and attractive? Hardly! Put down cute but boring. Man: What about fashionable? In those shoes?

3 Task 9 From a radio programme Sara Lee is well known to the Americans as a brand of baked goods pies, cakes, and cookies. The company used to be named Consolidated Foods Corporation, and Sara Lee was only one of their line of products. When Consolidated Foods decided to change their name, they chose Sara Lee. It was their most famous brand, and many Americans recognize the name. Sara Lee, by the way, was the daughter of the man who started the original bakery company in the Kitchens of Sara Lee. Task 10 Two people talking What do you think? Big enough? Man: Oh it s plenty big. Your apartment s not that big, anyway. That s something to think about. Too big? Man: Well it would seat six people with no problem. Well, that s a nice size for a party. Man: True. Do you ever invite more people over for dinner? Sometimes, but not very often. Man: Well then, this is big enough. OK, I ll take it. Task 11 A phone conversation Hello, can I help you? Man: Hello. Can I book a seat for tonight s show? Certainly. Do you want to pay now or later? Man: I can pay by credit card, can t I? Yes, sir. The seats are six pounds each. There s no booking fee. Man: OK, It s a Visa card, number And the expiry date? Man: April, That s fine. Your tickets will be ready for you tonight. The programme starts at Man: Thanks. Bye. Task 12 A woman talking I ll tell you what I cannot stand. This happens to me a lot when I m driving home from work. There s a convenience store with a really small parking lot. So there are always two rows of parked cars on the street, in front of the store. And it s a busy street, so two lanes of cars have to merge into one. It slows everyone down. It s so rude! Don t those people think about anyone else? It drives me nuts-makes you want to carry some eggs to throw at their cars.

4 Task 13 Female: Peter, what s happened? You look so down! Male: To tell the truth, I ve got a problem. John lent me his CDs. I took them to a party yesterday and now I can t find them. Do you think I should buy him some new ones? Female: Well, I don t know. If I were you, I d talk to John first. He might prefer money rather than new CDs. Male: I ll do that. Task 14 Peter: Hi, Alice. I haven t seen you for ages. I ve heard you aren t single any more. Alice: Hi, Jeff. Well, a lot of things have happened in my life. You know, I graduated from the university, got married, moved to a small house in the suburbs and found a job with a business company. Peter: Wow, that s great! My life hasn t changed so much since we last met. I still study law and live with my parents in a small flat downtown. But I hope I ll get a scholarship for a study abroad program. That s my dream. Alice: Let s go for a cup of coffee, Jeff. You can tell me all about it. Task 15 Weather forecast Be prepared for a change in temperature tomorrow and dress warmly. After the recent unusually warm weather we can expect a windy and cloudy day with temperatures going just above zero. Later this week there will be some showers, so don t forget your umbrellas. Task 16 At the bus stop Passenger: Excuse me, officer. Could you tell me how often the No 10 bus comes? Officer: You have just missed your bus, sir, but there is another one in half an hour. There is a regular service during working days, you know. Passenger: Do you think I can still catch my train leaving at 2 o clock? Officer: Certainly, sir. Task 17 Jim: I am afraid we are late for today s opening ceremony at the conference. George: Of course not. We ve got quite enough time. Jim: But the invitation says it starts at 9:00 a.m., and it is 8:40 now. George: Don t worry. The managing director allowed us not to be there from the very beginning. According to the conference agenda the first contribution won t start before eleven, so we need to arrive just about half an hour before that. There s no need to be stressed.

5 Task 18 Radio news There has been a huge disconnection of rail services this morning as a result of heavy snow. A number of traffic jams have been reported in the eastern part of the country. The weather conditions are making driving hazardous. Drivers should avoid accidents by leaving their cars at home. Limited train service will be operating in the next few hours and delays are expected on all lines to the town. Task 19 At the railway station Official: Official: Now, look, I do understand the rules, but I m in a great hurry. If I am to catch my flight, I just have to get on this train. Well, you ll have to go back to the ticket office I can t do that with all this heavy luggage! Surely it must be possible for me to get a ticket on the train! I can always explain the situation There will be an extra charge. Well, I ve got no choice, but I don t think it is fair. Task 20 Outside a theatre Man: Man: So, what did you think? That actress is different from what I could see on TV. She doesn t seem to have stage or musical experience, does she? Yes, she wasn t very believable and the awful costume she had. But this new writer certainly knows how to increase the tension. I was on the edge of my seat. Yes, and the atmosphere he created was really powerful, wasn t it? Task 21 A man talking John graduated from the university two years ago. He used to share a dormitory room, but now he doesn t. He has bought a new flat to be independent. Task 22 In a college corridor Man: Hi Julie. I m afraid I can t see you in the library tomorrow afternoon. I ve got to go to Mrs Jepperson s lecture. I thought you said that had been cancelled. Man: Hmm, she said last week that she might not be able to make it, but according to the noticeboard it s still on the schedule. Oh, really? Man: I know she s planning to go over the whole term s work before the exams next week so I think it s the lecture I shouldn t miss. Fine I ll see you later in the week then.

6 Tasks Male: Hello? Female: Hello, Mike, it s Carol. Male: Carol! I haven t heard from you for ages. How are you? Female: Fine. We ve just got back from a trip to the mountains. It was wonderful! And how are things with you and Jane? Male: Great, fine everything s fine. Female: I was just phoning to ask if you and Jane are doing anything next Saturday night. If not, would you like to come over for a meal? Male: I m afraid an old mate of mine from college is getting married in London, and we re going there for the wedding. What a shame! It d be nice to see you again! Female: Yeah, it is a shame. So how about Monday instead? I don t think we ve got anything planned that night. Male: Yeah, I think that should be fine. I ll check with Jane and call you back if there s any problem. Female: Great! We ll look forward to seeing you. Male: Okay. Thanks for calling. See you! Female: Yeah, see you!
