To our newest Butler Bulldog, Welcome to Butler University! We are excited about having you as a new Butler student. The quality of campus life will be crucial to your success while attending the University. At Butler, the Division of Student Affairs strives to integrate our students educational experiences into a campus setting with opportunities, challenges, and services that promote your development as a total person. The departments and services within Student Affairs focus on meeting the needs of students from the time they set foot on campus, through commencement, and beyond. This booklet provides you with the information needed to complete the housing application process online through your my.butler account. This will help get you started on your academic journey by securing your space within one of the residential communities our campus has to offer. Butler is committed to being a residential university. However, we recognize that students who live in the Indianapolis area may choose to commute from home. If you intend to continue living at home with your parent or legal guardian, the commuter application process is explained when you make that selection online. I am very pleased that you will be joining our Butler community and look forward to having you on campus. Butler takes a personal interest in every student. To be successful during your college years, it will be very important for you to find your niche on campus. The Student Affairs staff will be working with you to personally meet as many of your needs as we possibly can. We are here to help you, so please contact us with any questions or concerns about student life or student services. For all room-andboard-related questions, please contact Residence Life directly. Again, welcome to Butler! Sincerely, Dr. Levester Johnson Vice President for Student Affairs

First Things First The process outlined in this pamphlet is important and time-sensitive for all incoming students. All students must set their housing intention, whether you re applying for on-campus housing, living at home with a parent, or living off-campus with your spouse or child, etc. Students who intend to apply for on-campus housing will automatically be directed to the on-campus housing application. Since housing assignments are made based upon the date the online application is finalized, it is important to complete the application as soon as possible. Changes or additions can be made until the closing date listed at the start of your online application. Please use the step-bystep instructions in this pamphlet to complete your housing intention/application. Residency Requirement: All first-year students not living at home with a parent or legal guardian are required to live in one of the University residence halls. All sophomore and junior students not living at home with a parent or legal guardian, including those affiliated with a Greek organization, will be required to live in University housing or an approved Greek housing unit of which he or she is a member. The Department of Residence Life must approve exceptions to this policy, or requests to live at home as a first-year commuter student, in advance. Getting Started Since you have paid the $300 enrollment deposit (which includes the $100 housing deposit), you now have the ability to complete the online housing application at my.butler.edu. To find the housing application: Select Self Service. Select Student Center. Scroll to the bottom to find Personal Information. Click the link that says Apply for Housing. Select the link that says Get Started. To find your student ID number to give to a preferred roommate: Click on Student Center. Scroll to the bottom and click on Demographic Data. Your ID number will be in bold on this page.

Housing Intention The housing intention process is required for all incoming students. If applying for on-campus housing, check- mark that selection and click Go To Application. If you are not applying for on-campus housing, mark the applicable option and follow the provided instructions. Housing Terms and Conditions As you begin your online housing contract, you will need to read the terms and conditions for occupancy included in the on-campus housing information. This will include information on cancelling your housing contract. Print a copy for your records before moving to the next page. Once you check mark that you agree, you may continue to the next page.

Housing Application At this point, you will make several selections. At any time before you finalize your application, you will be able to click Save and return later. 1. Select the building(s) you prefer. For more details about the options, visit housingoptions. 2. Residence hall students are required to have the All Access meal plan. This plan allows students access to the dining halls any time they are open. You must select the All Access plan to continue with the online contract. Students who are assigned to apartments will be allowed to cancel the All Access plan or change to a voluntary meal plan. For more info, visit 3. Next, complete your lifestyle preference options, which will be used during the roommate matching process. Take the time to make these selections, even if you have a preferred roommate, as plans could change in the future. 4. Additional lifestyle or special unit preferences may be available to you. Checkmark these only if you would like to be considered for them. 5. If you have one or more preferred roommates, you must complete this section by entering the preferred roommate s Butler ID number and full name. Only mutual roommate requests will be considered. (Your requested roommate must list you on his/her application). If you do not have a preferred roommate now but later find one or more before the closing date for your group, you may return to your online contract and complete this section. The majority of incoming students do not have preferred roommates and are matched with their roommates by Residence Life staff. 6. Read the final contract statements and print a copy for your records. Please note: The date you finalize will be recorded and used to determine your housing assignment. Changes or additions to your online contract are allowed before the end date listed for your group. Just return to the online application and click through to make changes and then refinalize. This will not change the original date you finalized, which is used for your housing assignment.

Butler s Housing Options: Your Own Space With its dynamic mix of classes, co-curricular opportunities, recreational activities, and social events, University life offers an exciting pace to keep your mind and body on the go. And that makes your own space that place where you relax, study, socialize, and go about the chores of daily living an important part of your college experience. Butler provides housing for full-time, undergraduate students in its three residence halls Ross Hall, Schwitzer Hall, and Residential College (ResCo) and two apartment complexes University Terrace and the Apartment Village. For more details on these options, please visit Housing Assignment It is in your best interest to finalize your online contract as soon as possible. Your building and room type assignment will be prioritized based on the date you initially finalize your online contract. Room and roommate assignment information will not be sent until the end of July. For safety reasons, room and roommate information will not be given out via telephone.

We Take Pride in Our Diversity The term community means different things to different people. Residence Life defines community as an environment where people: Know each other Have shared goals Have a say in their living guidelines Hold community members accountable to these guidelines Respect, as well as celebrate, individual differences Feel safe to create and pursue their goals We believe that Butler s residential community assists its residents in developing skills and attitudes necessary to become positive and productive members of society. We also believe that the ability and willingness to appreciate and celebrate individual differences and ideas is of primary importance. Butler is a community composed of students, faculty, and staff of different genders, ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds, religious affiliations, races, sexual orientations, and levels of ablebodiedness. We will not tolerate harassment in any form based on these differences. Members of our residential community will be held accountable to this standard. We pride ourselves on our diversity. Each of us must do our part to encourage productive interaction and relationships among the residents who live with us. We believe a great deal is to be learned, taught, and shared by each of us. So stretch yourself; get to know someone different from you. Learn what another culture is all about. We believe your experience at Butler will be richer for it. (Adapted with permission from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County.)

Residence Life: It s All About Living and Learning! At first, the idea may seem a little basic. But, if you re like many students, college is a first step into the bigger world of living on your own a world of making decisions, taking responsibility for your future, and encountering people and ideas that will be challenging and new. Because that first step often is a big one, you might appreciate a little help making the transition into life at Butler and beyond. That s where Residence Life can help. The Department of Residence Life, within the Division of Student Affairs, is responsible for promoting and maintaining a comfortable living environment and facilitating a safe and secure campus community in which students are free to develop academically and socially. Residence Life programs encourage students to develop a sense of personal and community responsibility and to respect the rights of others. Residence Life also supports Butler s educational mission by providing opportunities to explore new experiences, broaden perspectives, enhance personal growth, and become involved in living, learning communities. The Residence Life staff oversees the management of Butler s on-campus housing. For a more detailed look at our staff and various positions within Residence Life, visit reslifestaff. For More Information It is impossible to cover everything you might want to know in this booklet. As questions arise, feel free to visit or contact us.
