1 Unit: The Sacrament of Baptism Stage: 1 Unit Overview In this unit students are introduced to the Sacrament of Baptism. Through this Sacrament we are initiated into the Church community. Baptism is a community celebration with many rituals and symbols used. The unit emphasises that we share in the new life of Christ, through the use of key symbols and actions used in the Rite of Baptism. Outcomes: Students will be able to: S1.3 - Demonstrate basic knowledge and understanding of Jesus and his teachings. S Identify key symbols, signs and rituals of the Catholic Tradition. S1.7.3 Demonstrate basic understanding of the Sacrament of Baptism Indicators: Explores how we are welcomed into different communities Reflects and responds to the story of Jesus and the children Explores Baptism as a way of becoming part of the church family Recognises, explores and identifies the key rituals in the sacrament of Baptism Recognises key people involved in the celebration of Baptism Reflects on their own experience of Baptism Assessment: Assessment opportunities throughout the unit are marked with * The unit integrates the key elements of storytelling Telling the story Wondering Exploring Prayer

2 Lesson 1 Belonging and Welcoming Explores how we are welcomed into different communities Reflects and responds to the story of Jesus and the children Religious Education Curriculum: Year 1, Pg 42 To Know, Worship, and Love: Book 1 (Ch 10, Pg 78) 3D figures Jesus, 2 apostles and children 1. Discuss and brainstorm with Ss groups to which they belong e.g. school, family, sports team etc 2. T and Ss discuss how you might feel when you are welcomed into these groups? 3. Using 3D figures tell the story of Jesus and the Children using the script provided in the Religious Education Curriculum, or chapter 10 of KWL as a guide 4. Read the I Wonder statement what you might say to Jesus if you met him pg 78, KWL to engage children in thinking about the story 5. Ss write in their religion journals in response to the statement Lesson 2 Introduction to Baptism Explore Baptism as a way of becoming part of the church family Recognise the key rituals in the sacrament of baptism Digital Story Board Baptism (refer to resource folder) KWL book 1: Chapter 11 Song: Welcome to the family 1. T writes church community on the board. Discuss how the church community is another group which we belong. Baptism is a special way we are welcomed into the family of God. 2. Ss view digital story board on Baptism adapted from KWL chapter Briefly discuss the main events cited e.g. the priest meets everybody at the door 4. Ss in their religion journals draw their understanding of Baptism * 5. Ss sing Welcome to the Family

3 Lesson 3 Liturgical Story of Baptism Reflect on the liturgical story of Baptism Script: RE Curriculum: Year 1, Pg To Know, Worship, and Love: Book 1 pg 86 White cloth, bowl of water, baby doll, candles, white garment Welcome to the family 1. Using resources such as cloth, a doll, bowl of water, oil, candles, and the script provided on pg 43 T leads the Ss through the liturgical story of baptism. 2. T reads the I Wonder statements KWL pg 86 to engage students in thinking about the rituals, signs, and symbols of baptism 3. In groups Ss are given an assortment of resources as used by the T in the previous activity. Ss are given the opportunity to re-enact the liturgical story of baptism to allow them to explore and develop their own understanding * 4. Ss sing Welcome to the Family Lesson 4 Introduction to the Symbols of Baptism CD-Rom Baptism of a child Digital story board/ slide show/ Pictures depicting a Baptism 1. T and Ss discuss and brainstorm different celebrations e.g. weddings, birthdays etc. Discuss what symbols are associated with these e.g. ring, white dress etc. Discuss how in Baptism there are also special symbols 2. Display pictures or present a slideshow depicting photos of a Baptism in order for students to identify the main elements. 3. Engage S s in discussion and brain storming in order to identify the symbols on Baptism e.g. water, oil, white garment, candle. T draws symbols on the board. 4. In Religion books Ss draw and comment on what happens with each of these symbols in a Baptism. *

4 Lesson 5 The Symbols of Baptism Candle Prayer Light of the world on a piece of cardboard or displayed in the classroom Pictures of each symbol Baptism Symbols worksheet or Resource Sheet 4 RE curriculum Bk 1 Pg Light a candle in the classroom and have the Ss say the prayer Light of the world 2. Ss revise and brainstorm the symbols of Baptism from the previous lesson. T displays pictures of each 3. T discusses the use and meaning of each symbol 4. Ss complete worksheet on the symbols of baptism demonstrating their understanding* Lesson 6 Visit to the church Identifies the key rituals, signs and symbols of baptism Local Parish and priest 1. Ss revise and discuss the symbols and rituals in baptism e.g. water, baptismal font, paschal candle etc. 2. Ss are taken to the local parish church 3. Invite the priest to talk to the children about the sacrament of Baptism and his role in the sacrament. 4. Allow Ss to walk around the church and identify the different places and symbols that are used in Baptism

5 Lesson 7 Who s who of Baptism Recognises key people involved in the celebration of Baptism Pictures of people e.g. a priest, child, godparents, church community etc To Know, Worship and Love: Book 1 Chapter 11 / CD ROM: Baptism of a Child. CEO Sydney / Digital storyboard: Baptism of a child 1. T displays pictures of the people involved in the celebration of a Baptism e.g. Priest, child, parents, godparents, family members, church family 2. T and Ss discuss the role each person has in Baptism 3. Ss draw pictures and label of their parish priest, their godparents, and family members * * Homework: Ss interview their parents about their own Baptism. Ss are to find a photo and information about the Parish they were Baptised in and the name of their Godparents Lesson 8 Researching own Baptisms Recognise the key people involved in their own sacrament of Baptism. Reflects on their own experience of Baptism. Ss baptism photos Baptism profile worksheet Banner titled We belong to the family of God. Welcome to the family 1. Ss share their baptismal stories with each other sharing pictures. This can be incorporated into news time or in small groups. 2. Ss complete baptism profile template and attach their baptismal photo e.g. My name is. I was baptised at. My godparents are...* 3. T displays Ss profiles under a large banner titled We belong to the family of God.
