Independent Study
Independent Study Taking responsibility for finding out and meeting the requirements of your programme Seizing the initiative when there are difficulties or challenges Actively participating in classes Meeting deadlines Setting and maintaining a focus on your goals
What is expected? Familiarise yourself with your module outlines and in particular assessment requirements Attend and actively participate take notes ask questions contribute to discussion Read and study independently Submit essays, sit exams etc. Ask for clarification or help if needed
Time Management Record schedule: Put in any commitments Travel time Social time Study time etc. Record actual after plan Review & remember (e.g., set alert) Introduce small changes if something does not work Use calendar and weekly planners
Physical Weekly Calendar
Electronic Calendar
Year Planner
Study Skills Review your previous experience as a learner Morning, afternoon, evening or night owl? What reinforces information for you? Do you work better with others or independently? Study Environment Where works best for you? Avoid distractions Are you motivated and alert? Be aware of your reading position
Places to Study at Queen s McClay Library
Places to Study at Queen s Medical Library BMC Student s Union Graduate Centre
Effective seminar contribution During After Before
Before: What are you expected to do? Regularly check QOL Regularly check your QUB Do the reading & actively engage with the texts Write up questions / comments for your next class Research Familiarize yourself with the module handbook Download the Power Point Slides in advance and familiarize yourself with the material (also given in the module handbook) Look for further reading (especially if it is your turn to be presenter at the weekly seminar contributions) Read the notes from the last session

During: What is expected from you? Attend! Show up early and prepared. Pick a good seat. Turn of all electronic devices. Listen actively Listen for cues or references such as firstly Take notes Handwritten / Digital? On the PPPs? Abbreviations Audio recorder Engage in class discussions
Contribute to the class Ask a question Develop a question before or in the course of the class Look for cues from your lecturer when it is appropriate to ask a question Ask for clarification May introduce your comment by using phrases like: As I understand it or So what you are saying is Stay sensitive! Give an opinion You may want to give an opinion or example to further class discussion May introduce your comment by using phrases like: In my opinion or The way I see it But: Stay polite! Make people aware that you give an opinion and not state a fact
After: What is expected of you? Go to office hours Edit your notes (and study) Have a technique how you do this e.g., re-write notes digitally, using colours, mind maps etc. Start a filing system e.g., one notebook for one class Transcribe audio data from your audio recorder Write assignments Form Reading/Study Groups

Feedback Reflect Think carefully about feedback in what format did you receive it: formal and informal so that you can act on it If you don t understand the feedback, ask! Talk to your lecturer (office hours) - Feedback has no value if you don t understand it and you don t act on it! Improve It helps you to work out where you have gone wrong and also tells you when you are on the right track It makes you feel more confident about your next piece of work Look at the feedback you have received recently and use it to make your next assignment better than your last one
Feedback
Assess your own performance Self-assess your own skills Think about what you have done well and what you can improve on in the future Maximise the advice you get it can often apply to a variety of assignments Be honest about your current working style Are you managing your time and meeting your goals?
Questions?
My Personal Recommendations Have a goal at the end of the day/week/month/year/ yes even life Set yourself deadlines: Guilt can do wonders! Sign up for academic lists you get infos you would have not received otherwise e.g., JISCMail Copycat (no, not plagiarise) papers you admire Get used to methods books, they will become a good friend of yours Start a smart filing system Data is the pollution problem of the information age. (Bruce Schneier)
