Walls W/m 2 K MEETING THE NEW FABRIC ENERGY EFFICIENCY STANDARD & BEYOND

Our new home, our future, we want lower fuel bills and reduce our carbon footprint - we want to get it right! The route to Zero Carbon Homes is becoming clearer. The Government, through the Zero Carbon Hub, is defining what industry needs to do to meet the target and it has been separated into three parts. The first, the Fabric Energy Efficiency Standard (FEES), has already been set. It will ensure that homes will have a high level of fabric energy efficiency through well insulated walls, floors and roofs with high performance windows and low air permeability.* The second part, the Carbon Compliance Standard sets targets for the amount of carbon produced from heating, hot water and lighting in the home. The fabric standards used here are improved upon the FEES with the effect that a reduced renewable input would be required to meet the Zero Carbon target.** The third part of the zero carbon definition, Allowable Solutions which still needs to be finalized. These are a range of measures which will have to demonstrate that developers are saving the remaining carbon emitted by the new zero carbon house, through investment in local Community Energy Funds for example or increased micro generation or energy efficiency within the construction its self for example. Whatever your wall type, Xtratherm have the solutions to achieve the Zero Carbon goal for sustainable living. *Houses adhering to the FEES standards there will be an increased need for photo voltaics or other renewable energy generation. **To reach the target of Zero Carbon some in-house generation of electricity will be needed except in the cases of biomass fuelled homes.

Wall Solutions Performance for the future For over 21 years Xtratherm have provided the construction industry with a full range of innovative rigid insulation products, components and detailing to meet the ever more stringent requirements of the building regulations. Walls Full Fill Walls Partial Fill Home energy use is responsible for over a quarter of our carbon dioxide (CO 2) emissions which contribute significantly to climate change. Insulating our homes effectively is the single most important factor in improving the energy efficiency of our buildings. Xtratherm provide detailed technical assistance to the self builder advising on best materials and specification to achieve a cost effective energy efficient design. Walls Timber Frame The performance of Xtratherm materials have undergone stringent testing and have received certification providing complete assurance. Xtratherm products are manufactured under Quality Assurance EN ISO 9001, Environmental Systems Assurance EN ISO and EN ISO

Walls: Full Fill TO ACHIEVE U-VALUE TARGET Xtratherm CavityTherm 100mm CavityTherm The logical way to achieve U-values as low as 0.16 W/m 2 K from a standard 100mm cavity. The Xtratherm CavityTherm System can be installed by competent, traditional brick/block layers. The engineered jointing of the components makes installation easier and ensures the continuity of the insulation layer.

Wall Solutions Performance for the future The new CavityTherm wall insulation system works within a traditional 100mm cavity using traditional foundations, building skills and materials to achieve U-values as low as 0.16W/m 2 K. Maintaining the standard overall wall width means no loss of living space internally nor an enlarged building footprint. The board includes specifically designed rebated edge detailing on all four edges to allow the system to tightly interlock when installed. Xtratherm CavityTherm has gas tight facings - with one additional HIP skin bonded to provide a drainage plane, directing moisture onto the outer leaf. A specially designed profile maintains a residual channel, protecting the structure. U-VALUE W/m 2 K & BEYOND WALL TYPE XT T&G Thickness U-Value Installing Xtratherm CavityTherm gives U-values that are indicative of targets set to achieve the higher levels of the Code for Sustainable Homes - but within traditional construction allowing the architect to design low carbon homes and maintain an overall cavity width of 100mm. Block Lambda 0.15 Block Lambda 0.15 Block Lambda 0.15 Block Lambda mm 100mm 125mm 150mm

Cavity T&G TO Walls: Partial Fill ACHIEVE U-VALUE TARGET Cavity Wall Solution 80mm partial with aerated block or 50mm Partial Fill with 50mm liner. Where exposure to wind driven rain excludes the use of full fill systems, Xtratherm XT/CW(T&G) is the best solution in partially filled external masonry walls. Xtratherm boards achieve high standards of insulation whilst maintaining a residual cavity to prevent moisture penetration, without a substantial increase in the width of the cavity and of the overall wall thickness. Improvements in U-values towards Zero Carbon targets are achieved with a substantial improvement in thermal bridging PSI values are achieved with an additional layer of and Xtratherm Thermal Liner XT/TL added to the inner wall. U-VALUES ACHIEVED Partial Fill Cavity XT/CW XT/CW Thickness 50mm 60mm 80mm 100mm Block Thermal Conductivity U-VALUES ACHIEVED Partial Fill Cavity XT/CW with additional 50mm o/a XT/TL Thermal Liner XT/CW Thickness 50mm 60mm 80mm 100mm Block Thermal Conductivity Dot & Dab finish 3 s/s wire ties/m 2 Dot & Dab finish 3 s/s wire ties/m 2

Low emissivity foil with a cavity resistance value of Outstanding thermal performance Robust tongue & groove jointing Pre-formed corner panels Clear cavity maintained Adding an Xtratherm thermal liner to the inner surface of the wall can achieve best practice U-values Xtratherm Wall insulation is placed in the cavity of a wall. The minimum residual cavity width allowed is 25mm in accordance with the XT/CW BBA certificate 07/4407. Xtratherm provide a Tongued and Grooved jointing system that results in a more robust, continuous layer of cavity wall insulation that minimises the threat of thermal bridging through inaccurate installation. The Low emissivity foil facing on Xtratherm boards improve the thermal resistance of the residual cavity to a certified value of

Walls: Timber Frame Timber frame TO ACHIEVE U-VALUE TARGET Timber Frame Wall Solution 140mm stud with fibre and a 40mm Thermal Lining with service void. Building Timber Frame construction is a fast systematic method that can result in buildings that perform well in Environmental terms and provide excellent Energy Performance ratings, if insulated to the highest standards. Xtratherm s Timber Frame Insulation Systems brings Timber Framed wall insulation performance to new levels, surpassing regulation values and aiming for those required to meet the Fabric Energy Efficiency Standard and beyond. Because of the restriction that stud depth presents, the only pragmatic solution to pushing timber frame wall performance toward Zero Carbon Standards is to insulatethe timber studs with an internal or external insulated layer to effectively reduce thermal bridging through the studs.

Wall Solutions Performance for the future Fibre between studs with Xtratherm sheathing U-VALUE W/m 2 K & BEYOND XT/SB Thickness U-Value 140mm Stud 40mm 50mm mm 0.15 (140mm fibre between 0.037w/mK) Using a fibrous glass or stonewool type of material between studs is the most common method of insulating Timber Framed constructions. Although not as efficient in insulation values, the flexibility of the materials allows the insulation to be squeezed between studs with irregular spacings. Placing a lining of Xtratherm XT/SB Sheathing Boards into the traditional cavity of the construction, and effectively insulating the thermal bridging caused by the timber studding drastically improves the insulation value of the walls. Fibre between studs with Xtratherm lining and insulated service void U-VALUE W/m 2 K & BEYOND XT/SB Thickness 40mm 50mm 60mm (140mm fibre between 0.037w/mK) U-Value 140mm Stud Using a fibrous glass or stonewool type of material between studs allows the insulation to be squeezed between studs with irregular spacings. An alternative to applying a Sheathing Insulation into the cavity to improve the thermal bridging factor of the timber, is to place a lining of Xtratherm XT/TF over the studding to the inside face of the construction, thus improving the insulation value of the wall. An insulated service duct can be created by placing counterbattens between the Xtratherm and plasterboard finish allowing services to be placed without compromising the integrity of the vapour control layer and enhancing the air tightness.

Walls: Thermal Lining & Detailng Thermal liner THERMAL LINING FOR NEW AND REFURBISHMENT - A PRACTICAL, AFFORDABLE SOLUTION. Whether you are upgrading an existing property or building new, the addition of an insulated thermal lining to the inside of a wall, roof slope or ceiling will dramatically improve the energy efficiency standards in your home. Mechanically Fixed In many instances, older walls are not suitable for dot and dab application because they present an uneven surface. In such situations, the application of thermal liners using a mechanically fixed system onto timber framing/battens or a metal furring system might be appropriate to provide a level surface. Xtratherm Thermal Liners can also be mechanically fixed directly onto an even wall. Direct Bonding - Dot & Dab Xtratherm supply a range of Thermal Liners with tri-laminate paper facings specifically to accept adhesive type fixing systems such as dot & dab. Adhesive bonding of the Thermal Liners can be made to most masonry surfaces if the walls are plumb and in good condition. Existing plastered walls that are in good condition will also accept the adhesive dabs, any painted surface should be sanded back and treated with a PVA adhesive before applying adhesive dabs. Ribbons of adhesive should be placed around all wall edges and all openings and services on the wall to provide a fire stop and avoid air

Wall Solutions Performance for the future Thermal Bridging the difference is in the detail Thermal bridging through standard SS wire ties in 100mm cavity. A major factor in the performance of the building fabric is not simply the amount of insulation you install, but how it interconnects with its other components and the other insulated elements within the design. Take a wall construction for example: you may indeed succeed in achieving a very good U-value by increasing the cavity and adding more insulation, but in the well insulated building that is required for Code level 3 and beyond, most of the fabric heat loss will not be through the main body of the wall, floor or roof - but at the junctions where those elements meet. This is why detailing and jointing of the insulation layer has become a critical factor in energy efficient design. It has been estimated that up to 30% of the heatloss in a well insulated house is through these Non Repeating Thermal Bridges at wall/floor junctions, corners, reveals, ceiling junctions heads and sills. Appropriate detailing to ensure the Continuity of insulation is now asked for by Part L, and this continuity can be satisfied by following details printed in the publication Accredited Construction Details, published by the DCLG. Using these details will allow the assessor to ascribe a good score to the detailing section within SAP and allow for a Y-value to be calculated. the target Y-value for the Fabric Energy Efficiency standards is approx Y=0.04. Increased Thermal bridging through bigger ties in wider cavity. Guidance can be found in the paper IP1/06 'Assessing the effects of thermal bridges at junctions and around openings'.
