2 HOUSTON COMMUNITY COLLEGE SOUTHWEST COURSE SYLLABUS MEDICAL TERMINOLOGY I HITT 1005 Study of word origin and structure through the introduction of prefixes, suffixes, root word plurals, abbreviations and symbols, surgical procedures, medical specialties, and diagnostic procedures. COURSE OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this training is to help you develop the fundamentals of Medical Terminology. We will show you how to do the most common tasks, provide you with tips, and point you to some of the fun and exciting new features that come with Medical Terminology. GOALS: On completion of this course the student will be able to: Identify medical terms related to diagnosis, pathology, and treatment of the major body systems related to diagnosis, pathology, and treatment of the major body systems. Spell medical terms related to diagnosis, pathology, and treatment of the major body systems. Define medical terms related to diagnosis, pathology, and treatment of the major body systems. LEARNING OUTCOME To complete the following task using the various features of Medical Terminology: Students will have a group project: On assigned presentation date, prepare a lecture covering the lesson objectives. You must utilize the computer and presentation software for your presentation. Students will have an individual project: 1) Transcription utilizing Microsoft Word and 3 medical records form the lab, retype the following reports from the medical record. 2) Database Management utilizing Microsoft Access, prepare a database of 50 medical records obtained from the lab. Fields to be included are the following: Last name date of admission ICD-9-CM First name date of discharge ICD-9-CM Age gender Generate the following reports: a) Mater patient index sorted by last name b) ICD-9-CM diagnostic index in numerical order c) Query of all male patients in alphabetical order d) Query of all female patients over the age of 23 in alphabetical order -2- Revised Jan 11, 2005
3 e) Report of average length of stay and average age of patients 3) Spreadsheet utilizing Microsoft Excel, prepare a spreadsheet of 50 medical records obtained from the lab. 4 ATTENDANCE: To fully benefit from the class, students are expected to attend all classes. REQUIREMENTS FOR COURSE COMPLETION CERTIFICATE: To receive a Certificate of Completion and Continuing Education Units, students must meet the following requirements: Attend at least 80% of scheduled class time Complete the course material demonstrating mastery of course concepts as determined by the instructor. CELL PHONES AND PAGERS: Cell phones and pagers are very disruptive during class. They must be turned off or set to mute while in the classroom or student lab. WITHDRAWAL AND REFUND POLICY: Please refer to your schedule for withdrawal and refund policy. 5 DISCLAIMER: Medical Coding introduces students to document coding of health insurance claims. The Contract Training and Continuing Education department does not guarantee student job placement in hospitals or medical offices, or insurance claims offices, and the course does not prepare students for home/office coding businesses. Students should not expect to have experience necessary for employment in the hospital setting. The Medical Coding certificate program prepares a beginner student for entry-level skills in a doctor s office or billing department. Students should not expect enough experience to operate their own billing software service after two coding classes.
